Message: Has anybody else had problems with there trucks shutting off after putting it in park? I have a 98 dakota sport & It soulds like it's idleing too low possibably. When I looked at my PCM i've noticed that Crystler reprogramed it when i took it in for the break hose recall. I also checked into changing my fuel filter.... but i didn't wanna have to take off my entire fuel pump & tank. Any Suggestions

Message: Do you mean the truck just stalls when you put it in park? Does it happen when the engine is cold, or hot? Mine will do this when hot. Sometimes it just starts to idle a little low, the it will stall when I go to park or come out of park to reverse. Dealer couldn't find the problem (For most dealers, no computer code = no problem/not broken). Mine only does it once in a great while, so I just ignore it.

Message: I have had the same problem for two years now. Only now it's excalated, or maybe I now have another problem, but it's running really rough AND stalling. I'm going to take it in on Friday and see if they can find anything. I'll let you know what they replace if anything.

Message: Well, all he did was replace the cap and rotor and reset the computer. I hope that's all that was wrong. I'll know more when it gets hot and humid outside.

Message: Im so sick and tired of listening to the mechanics at chrysler telling us that theres nothing wrong with your car becasue there stupid computer didn't pick it up. Were the ones driving it every damm day. I used to work at a dodge dealer and when i started working i was excited to work on cars but after listening to the other mechanics and advisors you just start resenting every one with a car problem and think its there fault. They had somthing called the treatment where if you acted like a ass when you brought you car into service they would do a burnout in you car in the back. I would just warn people that take there cars in to service to check you oil level after you had an oil change because they dont.
And no offence to the good mechanics that care about the people and cars like we do.

Message: Yes, I just started having this problem for the past 2 weeks ! I have a '99 Dakota, V-6, with 17,000 miles. When I get home from work, engine is warmed up. I back into my driveway and when I go fron reverse to park, the idle drops down and then stalls. Dealer can't find anything wrong. This only happens when going from reverse to park, no other time ! Any suggestions ?

Message: I would try a couple of simple things that can't do any harm...worst case, there is no change to the situation.
1. Clean the throttle body with a quality carb cleaner. As I understand it, gunk can build up slowly around the edges of the throttle plates. In an idle situation, those are almost all the way shut, so any gunk along the edge would impede what little airflow there is.
2. Try resetting your PCM by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for at least 30 seconds. Some people also suggest turning the key to the start position for 10 or so seconds to make sure there is no juice in the system. I did this on mine recently and was really surpirsed at what happened: no more part throttle knock on 87 gas, the transmission waits a little longer before upshifting, and it downshifts quicker. I haven't had a stall problem on mine so I don't know if a PCM reset will do anything for you, but it certainly can't hurt.

Message: I was having the same problem with my '97 3.9. I would go into park and it would shudder and stall, or other times going into reverse I would get the same result. Shortly thereafter I started getting a "check engine " light. After hooking it up yo an OBDII scanner I got the code p0740 which means transmission clutch circuit failure. In essence, the trans sensor doesn't detect a difference in RPM's from when the engine is put into park or from park into forward or reverse. My problem was related to a failing torque converter. The mechanic that fixed my truck said that was most likely the cause of my stalling problems also. He must be right since I haven't had any problems since. I hope it isn't the cause of your trouble though unless you have an extended warranty. Otherwise it can cost over $1200.00. Good luck researching your problem.

Message: Mine used to do that before as well. 98 x-cab v6.
Since I switch to Mobile 1 synethic, it went a way and the truck runs smoother.

Message: I have experienced this problem several times. The dealers were not able to isolate the problem because it did not do it all the time. I might go a couple of weeks between events and then it would start happening again. A local independent shop (with some real mechanics) took a look at the problem and located it within 5 minutes. The voltage from the alt was dropping just enough to cause a problem in the electronics. I replaced the alt and have not had a reoccurance. This was after the dealer had replaced just about every electronic part on the truck (warranty work) and the problem continued. The small drop in voltage appears to have been the cause all along. It has been 5 years now with out a single reoccurance.
