Just a thought, I believe this is a TSB.
NO: 23-65-97 Rev. A
GROUP: Body
DATE: December 31, 1997
SUBJECT: Loud Popping Noise Is Heard When Vehicle Makes A Sharp Turn Onto A Steep Incline

1997-2001 (AN) Dakota
NOTE: This bulletin applies to 4X2 and 4X4 extended cab vehicles.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A loud popping noise is heard coming from the rear of the cab as the vehicle is turned onto a steep incline such as a driveway approach.

DIAGNOSIS:
Drive the vehicle and turn onto a steep incline while listening for a popping noise coming from the rear of the cab. If a popping noise is heard, perform the following Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:
2 06501557 Bolt, Cab Isolator Mounting

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves removing the rear cab isolators and removing 1/4 in. to 3/8 in. of material from the isolator sleeve.

Using a suitable hoist, raise the vehicle.
Remove the two rear cab isolator mounting bolts (Figure 1) and the rear under-cab isolators.
Using a suitable jack, raise the cab off the rear cab upper isolator high enough to be able to slide a block of wood between the cab cross member and the frame.
Place blocks of wood between the cab cross member and the frame and lower the cab onto the blocks of wood.
Remove both rear cab upper isolators.
Grind 1/4 in. to 3/8 in. off the metal sleeve of the rear cab upper isolator as shown in Figure 2. Perform this operation on both rear cab upper isolators.
Install the rear cab upper isolators back onto the isolator mount.

With a jack, raise the cab high enough to remove the blocks of wood.

Remove the blocks of wood and lower the cab back onto the isolators.

Install the under-cab isolators onto new cab mounting bolts, p/n 06501557, and fasten the mounting bolts to the cab. Tighten the bolts to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.).

Lower the vehicle.

Hi, where can I find a list of TSBs for my 2000
Dakota. I have the brake/rotor issue, front end
clunk/grind(drivers)issue, and cab popping issue.

Any suggestions for good rotors? I saw the ball
joint info and should check that out.

I am way out of warranty at 75K, but would be interested to here what the dealers have done to help fix these issues. I've been to the dealer to many times and they are of little help.

thanks
ec

Hey Joe,

My truck does the exact same thing. I thought maybe it had come from the body lift which was installed but it doesn't. I believe I wore the shafts or bearings out in the rear axle because I've done a lot of towing. I think that because if I push the bed of the truck right and left (pretty hard) I can reproduce the clunking noise I hear when turing right up sharp inclines. The clunking is the axle moving back and forth between the drum brakes. So when I push the wheel remains still but I can actually hear the axle clunking against the drum. Anyhow, I'm taking my truck to a drive train shop in about two weeks to have them take a look at it. I'll let you know.

Wow I've had that one too. Same off ramp every night after work. Clunk chatter. Figured it was coming from the limited slip about to go out. But I've only got 35k on my R/T thought maybe I'd abused it to much. Sounds kind of like my Auburn locker, or a detroit locker. Glad to know it maybe just the dam cab rubbers. Thanks

I'm getting grinding and a whine from My 99 5.2 4x4. I'm going to pull the axle shafts this weekend in hopes of locating the noise. I'll post what I find. I had the cover of the differential earlier this week and found no unusual wear. Plus I couldn't reproduce the noise. I'm thinking the bearings have to be under load to to whine.

I have a 99 dakota 4x and I have been trying to identify the source of this noise you are describing. Same thing going up an incline, started with left turns but now is present going straight or turning right. It has been hard to reproduce, which makes for a fun go around with the dealer service manager. The problem seems to have been helped a bit (for now) by changing the rear diff fluid (w/additive). The senior mechanic at the dodge dealer thinks it might by the clutch slipping in the rear end. We'll see.

('99 dakota slt 4x4) I too had these symptoms - turns out it was the rear differential (LSD) that had gone out. This occurred at 38K miles. Just had it fixed at 40K miles. It's a $1200 job at the dealer. Kicker was, the LSD was weak from Day One and the Dodge dealer I bought it from (new) said there was no problem with it (since, of course, it would have been covered under warranty). hth

hey catalyst

I never did get this fixed yet. I've been toying with the idea of just trading my truck in for a Ford.. lol.. really though, that super duty with the front and rear dana 60 and diesel. That would solve all my braking, suspension, and lack of power problems..

Maybe I'll just put some Dana 60s on my truck and be done with it..and get rid of the IFS.. I don't know. I just can't see spending 1200 bucks to get an axel fixed. I could buy a whole Dana 60 for that.

I had that clunk sound. At first I thought it was my spare tire bouncing around. I changed my rear differential fluid and the clunk went away in a day or so. Now I get a grinding sound when turning. Is my LSD totally shot or should I add some more LSD additive and see if that cures it.
Thanks!

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with the LSD. Mine makes noise if I don't change the fluid (Dealer says 12,000)every 8000 miles! I have had Chryslers for over 30 years, and my last one (74 Charger), had 300,000 miles on it and never once needed a fluid change. What is the deal here? I brought the truck in for more problems than I could ever list here, and most of them, the dealer could not re-create. The worst was the 4 wheel anti-lock creating a hard pedal in panic stops, and I almost lost the truck! The point here is, while any manufacturer can make a lemmon, why is it that when you do a search on problems, DODGE is usually first!! I would just like to get my problems settled, so, that I can get some of my money back in use of the truck!! No wonder people are buying more Non-American vehicles!!! Not that there better, but, after all of the problems, you have to go and try something else. Give me an product from the "OLD" Chrysler Corporation any day. Guess I will get the 64 valiant running again, and drive it...lol..
