Subject: Belt noise?
IP: Logged

Message:
2000 Dakota R/T. Only makes this noise when the gas pedal is not depressed. As soon as I push down on the pedal it goes away. Tried some belt dressing. Worked for about 5 miles. Even tried an idea my father told me. Held a bar of soap to the ribbed part of the belt. That worked for about 10 miles. Seems to get worse in moist conditions. Did I say that this is the most annoying sound to ever here come out of a truck with only 25,000 miles? Thanks for any help guys!

Possibly clutch fan? I have no idea!

I'll bet that noise is louder and more frequent when it is damp/wet outside. If it is the only way to make it go away is to replace your serpintine belt. Had/have 5 Dodges 2.2-4, 3.0-6,
3.5-6, 3.9-6, and 2.7-6, with the same problem and that is the only way it goes away.

"dogliftsleg", You hit the nail on the head. It's noisy as heck the day of a rainstrom and when there is heavy fog. Last for about a day after the storm. Then it stops.

I use goodyear gatorbacks as replacements. I get a lot more wear out of them then the factory stocks do before they start to sqeek again. It took us from '88 till 95 to figure this one out, up here near Lake erie it is very humid and we noticed on a trip out west it quit once we got to the arrid s/west. Got back home and it started up again. we noticed some says were worse then others. Then we kept track of weather as it related to the noise. It took us a while but a pattern appeared, I changed a belt and the noise was gone. Been "fixin" it that way ever since.

Yeah I get the same irritating Sqeal! I replaced the belt stopped for awhile. It came back real soon though. And I got out the short peice of rubber hose and used it like a stethoscope, and found it to be the idler pulley on the right upper side of the engine. 5.9's as you're sitting in the vehicle or the left hand side if you're standing in front of it with the hood open holding the sledge getting ready to let loose with it! It's pretty easy to fix you don't even have to replace the part if you're cheap like me. And yes it first apeared around 25k, not real assuring on Dodge's part. But you loosen the belt you don't have to take it completely off,and you remove that pulley it's easy to unbolt. Then ya get the thing out and I shot it with my favorite spray lubericant and spun it, I'd did this to both sides of the pulley until the inner bearing smoothed out a bit. It's a sealed unit not grease zerk's. My next try is to try and shoot grease under preasure around the the lip of the race. Ok Ok maybe I should replace this dam thing but that's what I've found it to be....

I had the same problem with my 94 making a squealing noise. I solved my problem by buying a new idler pulley. The noise comes from the bearings in the pulley wearing out.

Yeah but at only 30,000 miles the sealed bearings are worn out! That's not to good a life span on parts. I'm a cheap skate. And it lasted about 3000 miles last time I lubed it. So how much are they charging for that pulley?

I bought my truck with 139000 miles on it so i don't know how long they are supposed to last but i do know that when i replaced it the noise stopped. if this doesn't stop the noise, i would also check the water pump, as it tends to make a clanking noise when it wears out.

If you need to make sure it's a belt just spray any household cleaner on the belts while the engine is running. If it's a belt the noise will stop right away. Sometimes the noise will stop for a long time.

Sprayed a little belt dressing on it and it went away for about five minutes. Go figure. A garage kept, babied truck with only 26k miles and the belt is already done.

I'm hearing the same thing. 25K on the truck and the squeeling is the most horrid thing I have ever heard. I did have some belts replaced and even replaced the pully. But now I still hear this squeeling and it is proportional to road speed. Anywhere from 10mph to 40mph this thing just makes noise. 10mph it's an annoying screetch that sounds like a low powered battery trying to start a car. At 40 it is just whailing. My one mechanic has torn everything apart and cant find the cause of this thing.

I had a squealing noise at the front of the engine at about 30,000 mi it was the cluch fan. when the fan kicked in it would put pressure on the clutch bearing and stop the sound and when the fan stopped it let the bearing bounce around and make the squealing noise. It was a real mystery for a while. I now have 90,000 on the truck and I can hear the clutch fan starting to go again. If you try and wiggle your fan and there is even a little play there it is probably screwed.Compare play with a new one on a car lot.

Yeah, i have the same problem. Spray different brand of belt dressing on it if one doesnt work. Also spray it on all the belts with the engine off. It works the best that way.Soap doesnt work all that great. The best belt dressing comes in a little silver can with a red straw to spray with.

Ok.. I've had belts replaced, I've had the idler pully replaced and my symptoms are matching ya'lls that once I step on the gas it goes away. Some other posts on here are saying next is the fan clutch or clutch fan.. one of the 2.. I'm so pissed off at it that I'm ready to trade it in on a HEMI Ram..

I own a 1983 Ford F-100 with the 4.9L 300 Cu. Inch 6 cylinder engine. The fan belts have been replaced on several occasions, but I have never been successful in eliminating a very aggravating squeal upon starting the engine in the morning. Could there be material in the pulleys that might be responsible for the continued fan belt squeal? Knowing that I am changing belts and not eliminating the problem is getting very frustrating.

how do i loosen the tension on the idle tension pully loose (not off) on a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 V6. I got a new belt and am trying to save money by doing it myself but i can't get a socket in there to loosen it up and that noise is driving me crazy. Anybody with the manual that can tell me the exact size of the nut or if i'm just supposed to take off just the pully.

find a wrench or socket that fits the bolt in the center of the pulley on the tensioner. put either of those on that nut and pull clockwise.
