00 Quad cab 4x4 4.7 auto.
72000 miles
Warranty is up at 75000

Just started having this problem. I hear a distinct ticking
at about 2700 to 3200 rpm while under load. Can be
heard in second, but really noticable in third. What do
you guys think this is? Maybe pinging? Sounds like
your tapping a pencil on the desk really quick and
hard... the lead part of the pencil.

I have to get this fixed before my warranty is up!!!
Otherwise Ill be tempted to get rid of my Dak, since im
so worried about something big breaking right after the
warranty goes. My trannys already on the brink...

Thanks guys!!!!!!

Oh, forgot to mention. The truck is stock except for 32"
tires. And it only occurs at part throttle. Like cruising at
45 mph, accellerating slightly... Usually downshifts
from OD to 3rd and when I hit 2700 rpm, it starts ticking,
so I let off. Or I can power through it, by flooring it to
second and not get any ticking...

I have a 97 with 86k miles an ever since 27k or so I have also had this problem and has been in the shop toooooo many times for this! 1st time was a cracked distributor, 2cd time was a arcking plug wire, 3rd time they reprogramed my pcm, 4th time they updated new program for pcm, and the 5th and final attempt was A mechanic got smart and checked the engine temp. at normal operation and said (HEY THIS IS RUNNING TO HOT) which was the 200 deg mark or temp gauge straight up! The mechanic used to work at the Chyrsler tech center and said that these 5.2 run better at 170 deg. Come to find out the radiator was half working and he put a 180 deg thermostat in it and told me to run at least 89 oct. or higher! and man was he right! Ever since I bought the truck new it has always ran at the 200 deg mark. Now it runs at 170 deg point and the pinging is gone! So my advice to you people is to change the t-stat and check the radiator with your hands and make sure it is hot from top to bottom! You will find a performance difference and the response when you put the pedal to the floor will sink you back even further into your seat! I love it! And no it does not effect the heat at all in the winter, it warms up the same amount of time as before. Good luck!

I purchaced my 2003 Quad on a friday and on Sat. morning I put a 180deg thermo in it. I learned along time ago that the stock 195deg thermo that the factory uses is for emmissions not power or long engine life. Don't go as low as a 160, you will use alot more gas, the computer doesn't think the engine is warm yet and will enrich the mixture.

Hey guys you might wanna look at my post NO CYLINDER PRESSURE under performance! I had this same ticking sound and thought it was pingin from the plugs. A bent pushrod and bent valve spring was the culprit for me! It eventually died on me! I heard the noise the best when at 3000 rpm -4000 rpm range and driving in a tunnel or somewhere with walls on either side!! Sounds goofy but thats the best way I could hear it! Does your truck have a tendency to shake mildly while cruising? Or has it ever?

Hey there demon boy, How much did you spend on all this? $4000, maybe $5000? Did you ever consider doing any tranny work before all the engine work because if I was you I wouldnt be bragging about how fast it goes in the 1/4 mile with all that work done with those numbers! All I had done to mine is duel exhaust from glass pack back, 180 t-stat, and a k&n filter. It is the 5.2 with limited slip in rear end and when tranny blew I put a shift kit in it and it will do around 14.1 at 97 mph! Oh yeah have you replaced your t-stat yet because your probably losing hp running too hot! So your probably getting laughed at by other people as well!
