Hi Guys, I have a clicking sound coming from the transfer case on my wife's 1990 Dakota Sport. Doesnt matter if your in 2 or 4wd, sounds like the speedo gears making noise, U-joints feel good, no play, hot running, or binding. Any ideas? Thanks Mike

NOISE IT'S PROBABLY THE CHAIN THATS IN THE TRANSFER CASE, DON'T LET IT GO TOO LONG OR YOU'LL BE REPLACING A TRANSFER CASE, MINE SHELLED ON ME GOING ABOUT 55 MPH, IT WAS NOT SOMETHING THAT IWOULD WANT SOMEBODY ELSE TO GO THROUGH.

I own a 1993 Dodge Dakota 4x4 V8 and I am having a problem with a clinking noise coming from my transfer case. I had put it in 4 wheel drive to get out of a snow bank recently and now I have a noise coming from my transfer case weither I am in 4 wheel drive or not. It sounds almost like something is rattaling inside but I took it to a
mechanic and they said that it could be anything in the transfer case but that they did not know of anyway to disconnect the 4 wheel drive so that it did not ingage so that I could drive it home the four hours that I had to go they also said they were not sure if it was a big deal or not. I would like to know if any one else has this problem and what they did to repair it. I also have to replace my cadalitic converter in order to pass the emissions test in Canada so that looks to be about 1200.00 I would really like to not have to put out another load of cash to have my case rebuilt if I don't have too. Any ideas or solutions?

i just pieced back together my 1990 dakota 4x4 shortbox automatic. i was cruisin down the highway about 70-75mph when my transfer case blew apart taking with it my tranny and shoving my rear drive shaft throgh my reaer end. Very unpleasant experience. This truck combination was not easy or cheap to find parts for. All used parts except u joints cost me around $1000.

good job dodge

The drive chain in the T-Case is stretched and or the chain sprockets are worn. While in 2x4 or 4x4, this chain is always in motion. I replaced my Dakota's chain at 100,000, just about the last original part in the truck.
