Yep, I backflushed the heater core (and radiator while I was at it) and now the heater kicks out the heat! Wow, $1.95 flush treatment fluid and my garden hose to fix a supposed $1600 heater core problem.
Heh,heh... yep daddio, I like your play on words: "stealership". You bet I'll be talking to the service manager this next week.

My A/C Evaporator sprung a leak recently, and my heat wasn't putting out, so I decided to tackle the job myself (wasn't going to fork out the bucks for it).
My advice to anyone that's going to try this is to get the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL, which you can find on the web and download for free if you look around enough, or you can buy it online for about $40.00. It gives you step by step instructions on how to do this job. Basically, this is not an impromptu job you just hack out in an afternoon, you need to study the manual for a week or so, and plan out what you'll need, and get used to the procedure. Otherwise you'll end up like that poor slob in this earlier thread that completely disassembled his dash (needlessly - what a nightmare). I Did both the heater and A/C evaporator cores.
I have an air compressor and air ratchet, so that made things a bit less difficult. The only special tools I needed were the A/C disconnect tools ($6.00 at Pepboys) and a set of torx SCREWDRIVERS (not sockets). Also bought an el cheapo ($16.00) venturi vacuum pump at harborfreight to pull a vacuum on the A/C before filling it again. You'll definitely need a set of metric sockets (standard and deep sockets). Also you'll need some sort of silicon rubber sealant (a lot of it) to re-seal your AC/heater box after reassembling it. Also some foam weather stripping (sticky backed) might come in handy when installing the cores.
Basically, the job goes like this: (a) remove the kick panels+steering wheel(b) unplug a bunch of connectors (c) remove the 5 bolts near the windshield and loosen the one behind each kick panel (d) fold the dash forward, remove more connectors & cables, remove the entire dash from the vehicle as one unit. (e) disconnect the A/C, bypass the heater core (f) remove the AC/heater unit from the vehicle (g) take it apart replace the heater core and the A/C evaporator, clean everything with bleach and water (very moldy in there). (h) put it all back together, recharge the A/C (i) enjoy good heat and A/C again.
It took me 14 hours to complete it (including two trips to Pepboys), from the time I hauled my tools into the garage to the time I finished cleaning up. I think I could do it in about 8-10 hours if I had to do it again. I'd say start this very early in the AM on a Saturday - that gives you all day Sat & (and Sunday just in case something goes wrong).
Take your time and keep all the screws and bolts together with the parts they came out of. Even keep notes if necessary.
I can tell you, when you have your truck innards all spilled over the garage floor and your looking at your bare firewall from the inside of the cab, you're going to feel like crying, but keep the faith and follow the instructions in the service manual. You'll get her back together. Actually it goes together a lot quicker than it came apart.

We own a 2001 Quad Dakota 4.7 and a 2001 3500 Dually Diesel. Both heater cores went out at appoximately the same time. The heater core for the dakota is very hard to locate(other from the dealer who stated it was on back order.) When I called the dealer the parts guy stated there are no problems with the heater cores in either of the afore mentioned vech. LOL I will start on the dually today because it is driven more often and I was able to get a heater core for it rather easily. As suggested in another post invite friends over to help (bonding time) it helps when your best friend has been a certified Dodge mech for over 30 years.

With 175K miles on a 01 4WD 3.9 Sport XC my heater core is finally makin a mess on the passenger side floor. Granted I have better things to do than spend my day ripping apart the dash, but that doesn't scare me. What scares me is having to do it again soon. I see heater cores that range from $69.00 to $378.00. What's the difference? Is one really better than the other?

Add me to the list. '99 Dodge Dakota 4x4 w/ 318. Heater core leaking, didn't want to pay the high charges to get it fixed so i dumped some stop leak in it and now its not leaking anymore, but i have no heat. Oh well.
