Message: Well it only took several months since my first letter dated 3-12-05 to Dodge to finally receive my original documents back, and I had to go to dodge.com - contact us to ask for them again. She even sent my original letter back with them. Got an e-mail back (reply 8/8) that she located them and would send them to me. Thank you again for this site for I have gone back three pages of headings and found other items from cheap brake pads, ball joints, to other shortcuts done it the building of this truck of mine. I will keep checking out the new messages. Thanks

Message: Metalhead, take the kick panels (the plastic panels on teh sides under the dash in teh foot areas) off and you should see a 3" diameter metal plate with a nut on it and a slot going to the nut. I just took teh instrument panel bezel and gauges, radio, glove box, steering wheel off. Unhooked teh fuse panel connectors. Dropped teh column down, removed teh shift lever (manual). Loosened teh hinge nuts and removed teh 5 screws near teh windshield and rotated teh dash to the seat.

Message: I had the local Dodge place change the heater core in my 99 Dakota a couple of months ago. When I got the truck back, I still smelled antifreeze but I figured it might go away in a few days.
2 months later, I still smell antifreeze when the heater is on, but no smell when it's not on.
I took the truck back to them to see if the heater core is leaking. They said they did a "pressure check" and that it's not leaking but that I do have head gasket leaks on both sides.
I've only had the truck for about 5 months - bought it used with 125k miles. When I was getting the heater core changed, they told me that the pinging I was hearing is rod bearings that are about to go out. Maybe that's why I got the truck so cheap.
But my question is this... If I only smell antifreeze when the heater is running, isn't that a leaky heater core? The windows don't fog up but the antifreeze smell is VERY strong - but only when running the heater.
I want to take the truck back and make them fix the probelm but I don't want to look like an idiot if I'm complaining about the wrong problem.

Message: DroopyPawn
I don't know if this will help but when I found out that it was the heater core that was the problem, in my list of things to do to the repair shop (added the 30K maintenance) was to clean out the residue in the heater vents. After repair I asked if this was done. Well it wasn't so I did have the antifreeze smell for about two months. Ten months later no smell, no inside passenger window fogging, no residue at the passenger floor heater air vents, and best of all no leakage from the new core that I could find. If the smell doesn't go away I don't know what to tell you. On the pinging to me that is the gas, but if it is knocking then yes it could be the bearings inside the engine, wrist pins,( loose) connecting rods to crankshaft, or others that could cause this problem. Good Luck

Message: Ya, if they say they did a pressure check and you still smell it I'd tell them to show me this pressure check. On the otherhand if coolant did leak into your vents then you gotta know that stuff stinks and stays around for a long time. I know the dealership will clean out your vents, they had a special on it last month up here. I didn't remember seeing the price because I remember thinking why the hell would anyone pay for that. But now I know. If it's not too expensive that would be my first course of action.

Message:
I have read all these threads going back to 2003. And of Coarse the new car smell of cooked raidator antifreeze coming through the vents just is not the sent I was looking for. Have not yet gotten the fog or film on the windshield yet!
So after all my hours of reading from this thread I have come to the coclusion that it got to be the core. I have the 2000 dodge durango slt 4x4 and love the truck. My question is to yo guys is this. I cant afford the $800-$1500 ollars to have this fixed, I found a new core on line for $28.00 bucks plus $8.00 shipping. What can I do to absolutly know whith out a doubt this is the core leaking, and that I don't have a problem elswhere. There is nothing leaking on the ground. Sometime when walking by the truck you get a small wiff of antifreeze. So i am looking at tackeling this my self in my own 2 car garage. RPRacing how hard is it to do the dash removal like you were saying? Remove the steering wheel? Holy s..t? Airbags? is it really not that bad? Who wants to come to my house and help, I'll feed you and all beer you want....LOL

Message: Hie again, I replaced the core in my 2000 3.9 DAK with an after market core. I was a real pain in the a**, mut I must have got it done right because everything works I used some kind of spray stuff to get rid of the smell, I don't remember what it was but I bought it at a supermarket in the laundry detergent section. I think it was Fabreze. I sprayed the carpets Liberally and then vacuumed the stuff out with a wet/dry shop vac.
RE: the brakes. I replaced the front rotors and pads a while ago and after a couple of months I started to get the warped rotor syndrome. I put up with for about 6 months until I couldn't stand it any longer then bought new, top of the line, Raybestos pads and rotors. SWEET.
I am now the proud? owner of a new 2005 4.7 DAK ext cab with all the bells and whistles. This sucker even has heated seats and mirrors. So far, so good. Happy holidays to all you politically correct folks, Merry Christmas to the rest of you crusty old dogs.

Message: I am fed up with my '01 dakota entirely. I think the heater core is going out for the fourth time now. I just replaced the damn thing in august. Thought I had while to possibly sell it next summer and now the smell of antifreeze has come back. I think I have either a lemon truck or a lemon autobody shop. Either way I am pissed!

Message: I have a 01 Quad Cab with 4.7 automatic. Have 132,000 km on it and thought that the heater core went, well shop replaced it last week and the fog is worse then ever. When we called this morning they NOW say that the tubes going into the core were corroded. They replaced the O-ring and tried to seal it with something else.
There excuse was that they would have to wait for the parts. I would have waited if I was given the option.
Hope this might help
Other than this, we have been very happy with this truck.

Message: One thing people with dakotas really need to do is change the coolent changing intervals from 24 months/24K miles to every 6 months. Apparently dakotas of this vintage suffer from serious electrolysis issues (hence cores going bye bye within 6 months). As soon as you get the new core in FLUSH the system and refill with de-ionized water, not distilled. Did this with my 5th core and its still holding good. At least until I can get rid of this POS truck.

Message: I really need to update that site with some new pics (as I am putting in the second new core now...) It is a big job, but not nearly as hard as my site looks. Turns out that you do not need to completely disassemble the dash as shown. Simply remove the kicker panels and some trim around the dash and there are 6 bolts to remove and 2 the loosen and a few srews along the top and the dash leans forward. Disconnect all the wires and the whole dash comes out as one unit. Helps to drop the steering column as well. The rest is then the same.

Message: Well, It's time to tackle my heater core. I put it off so long and now just have to do it since I moved to Wyoming and it gets COLD here. I've been driving to town 50-60 miles each way to get materials to build my home for several months, and it is not a comfy drive when it is 20-30 degrees inside the truck!
I'm gonna try to do it over the weekend before I get a job and since I have a garage to work in now. Wish me luck.
