Message: Does it do it just when you shift from drive or park to reverse? Does it do it for a second or two then stop? If so this is normal and is just the solenoid shifting the gear on the tranny. They all do this.
OPINIONS ARE LIKE....WELL, YOU KNOW THE REST!!

Message: I know what you are talking about. Mine does that also. The dealer has had my truck for 5 days now and they think they found the problem. When in reverse the engine torques over a little causing a bolt to rub on something in the engine compartment. The only problem is they don't have a clue on how to fix it. Only a thousand miles on it and all of this. I still love my truck though. I will give an update when they finally figure it all out. Thanks for the help though.

Message: Just an update. After being in the shop going on almost 2 weeks now they finally figured out that there is a TSB concerning the noise my truck was making. They are going to replace 5 seperate parts when they get them later this week. I will list the TSB# and parts list when I find out what they are. I just want my truck back. I will keep you guys posted.

Message: Sorry it has been so long. In the military and they can keep you busy. Well The noise is finally gone. The removed the whole dash and heater unit from the firewall and noticed that the bolts securing everything were to long causing other things to bind and rub. So no more noise and my truck is back together. Now another issue is that when driving above 40 mph my truck feels like it is bouncing up and down just a little. Dealer says that they can't fell it. Going to have the tires checked and balanced next. Also going to try the autolite 3923's to get rid of the engine knock. Thanks for the help and will keep you posted on the updates.

Message: I have a 2002 dakota quad cab with the 4.7 v-8 and the 45rfe auto trans and a anti spin differential rear end 2WD. I have the noise in reverse also. Sometimes when I put it in reverse there is a grinding noise from the tranny area.If I accelerate in reverse the noise is louder and faster. If I put the truck in drive and back into reverse the noise goes away. I also have put the truck in reverse and it is in neutral. IE the indicator on console and shift lever indicate reverse but it is in neutral, period. Dealer cannot duplicate problem and will not pursue even though I have video of both things occuring.I like the truck except for the transmission. It is really clunky when going into reverse, like an old car with a wore out u joint. I also hate the noise they say is normal when shifting from rev to drive or drive to reverse. The dealer says it is normal but it is loud as hell and I know of no other car with auto trans that makes that noise. I would appreciate any help.

Message: Mine was a ticking noise. Sounded like it was the tranny, but it was some bolts that were to long holding stuff to the firewall. The dealer never did give me a TSB#. If one even exists. I had to keep on the dealer for a week before they finally agreed something was wrong. Good luck. Now if I could find out where the whistling noise is coming from and the rattle from the rear cab wall area.

Message: Make sure it is all the way in reverse, sometimes you can move the shifter a little below or above the gear, I did this a few times and heard ticking, and found out I hadn't been putting it all the way into gear. Oops!

Message: I have a 2002 V6 4WD Dakota. When in reverse it sounds fine until you acclerate, especially backing up a hill. Then it almost sounds like a muffled pop off valve releasing. Naturally the dealer doesn't think it's anything to worry about. I have 11,000 miles on it and it hasn't gotten any worse. I would like to know what it is though.

Message: Hey Alan, did you figure out what it was? I just got a 2001 4.7 v8 Dakota and it's doing that too, every once in a while. It will grind badly. I'll put it into any other gear and back into reverse, the noise is gone and it works just fine. I cant find much online, my friend told me the reverse-low clutch is going out and I don't want to believe him. The guy I bought it from, whom I have known for a long time said it never has done it to him.
