Subject: RE: 5-45RFE auto trans drain back problem.

Message:
There is no inline drainback valve in the 45rfe
545rfe transmission pressure cooler line. There is 2 transmission filters on this transmission. one is a normal type trans filter of old. the other is a internal cooler return filter. Which in the event of a torque converter failure will catch the debris from the converter as not to clog up the transmission cooler and cause major planetary failure. Also built into this 8 dollar filter is a drain back valve!! there is a revised internal cooler return filter available due to a drain back problem causing all the described delay into gear problems. TSB#
21-015-05 part #04799662. All 04799662AB cooler return filters with the “AB” suffix are suspect.

I had same problem, hooked a computer up to it
and it said calculated oil temp in use.so i
looked up in my chilton and it said my
transmission witch is the 45rfe can take up to
14 querts, i only had six in it after i filled
it on transmission fluid change i ended up
putting 12 querts in it and no more code.
transmission works great takes off like a
bat.also it read past full mark on my dip
stick,so dont be afraid to add trany fluid.if
you add to much the transmission will shift to
hard, so that can give you an idea if you got
to much in it.hope this helps
