I am thinking about getting a Dakota V6. I have heard some horror stories but am wanting to compare the ratio of bad to good stories there are. If you have/had a Dakota please drop me a line letting me what you think and if you have had any problems.

I love my 2000 CC 4x4. I have the V-6, auto, with a few little mods (exhaust and stuff). I have only had 2 problems with the truck. On was a computer code for leaking fuel vapor, it took 3 visits to get it fixed, but the problem has not come back. The other was warped front brake rotors. The stock rotors warped after only 12,000 miles, and again in about 8,000. I replaced them with premium Raybestos rotors, and I am at 35,000 now with no more complaints. I love the V-6 for everything except gas mileage and power. These two issues are fixable with some modifications. The engine has a long heritage (over 13 years) and is well known for lasting well beyond many of its competitors. I know of several that are beyond 200,000 miles with poor maintenance and considerable abuse. I fully expect to see 250,000 out of my truck, especially with the amount of highway miles I drive. Many people wil tell you to get the V-8, and if you want tire spinning power, go ahead and get it. But I am happy with my V-6.

I have had the same thing Shawn I have a 2000 Quad
Dakota as well. I had 18000 miles on mine, and the rotors warped. had to get them turned. I have 20000 on it now cross my fingers. I have the V-8 auto and the wider tires. They just dont make the rotors strong enough on them.

I think dodge bought into a bad batch of rotors in 2000. Or else they just gave the Dakota a really cheap set. I turned mine once, then gave up and replaced them. The aftermarket rotors are working fine, so I'm ok with that. I've heard of some people having much worse issues. By the way, I agued with my dealer over the rotors, and got no where. They wouldn't even turn the rotors for me under warranty. They tried to tell me it was due to my "style" of driving. Hell, the way I drive, I don't even use the brakes!! ;)

Nah, the dust is simply that, brake dust. It's the real-fine particles of pad that have to go somewhere after rubbing off under braking. :0)

There are pads that won't do that, but they tend to squeal from what I've been told. Still, I'll probally get something like them when mine go bad. The wheels look like crap full of brake dust!

I have no brake problems (no black dust, but yeah, they do get a little squealy on a damp morning).
Overall I absolutely love my truck. If you're going to buy a used one, check the upper & lower ball joints. Also, front bumper peeling seems to be a common problem. I've talked to several people with 97-98 that have had catalytic converter problems -emissions warranty will cover it but it's still a pain, I've had mine replaced 3 times. Some people say that the 3.9 is a piece of junk (I don't agree - I love mine) and to go for the 4.7, that much more power and upgrade potential with not a lot of mileage difference.
