Subject: replacing brakes
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys, I am replacing my front rotors today, is there anything else I need in addition to the rotors and pads? I have had pulsing in the brake pedal for months and it is driving me crazy. Do you think this will be enough to cure my brake troubles or will I need to do something to the rear brakes as well? Brakes are not my specialty so any help is appreciated.

I had the same problem at 30K I put on new pads and rotors. That seemed to have fixed the problem. Stock rotors are junk.

There is another thing you can buy. Go to Home Depot and buy a 1/2" torque wrench for around $60.00 and a 1/2" drive deep socket(I forget the size). Best money you can spend. Stock rotors may be thin but you can save lots of money and avoid most, but not all of the "common Dakota brake problems" by making sure the lugnuts are torqued correctly.

2002 QC 4x4 Sport Plus, 4.7L, auto, Patriot Blue, Tire & Handling group,
Heavy Duty Service group, Leer cap w/out windows, Mopar Step bars and roof rack, Rhino liner in bed and on step bars, Pace Edwards Power Tailgate lock
3.55 rear, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, all possible fluids are AMSOIL

My son has 31K miles on his Dakota and Saturday his brakes locked up. Had to be towed in. Dealer said the problem was contaminated brake fluid, dealer said it did not look like brake fluid. He has never added fluid to it. Has anyone else had this problem?

I would get the Power Slot brake rotors. They have a better corrosion preventative coating than the Raybestos Power Stop. I know, my Raybestos' are all corroded and look like crap. Work smarter not harder

Where's a good place to get the PowerSlots from? Recommendations?

And what pads should I get with those?

I was just told by the Dealership that the inside facings of my rotors actually have patches corroded out of them, and the pads are at 10% remaining.

Can't afford the $415 for them to do it, and don't want OEM crap on this thing again.

TIA

hey ron simmons you are not the only one this has happened to. I think that the design of the spindle assembly is the real flaw!!! What I mean is that when the brakes are applied the piston gets side loaded and when this happens enough times the piston freezes in the caliper. BTW this happened to my father twice. this is also why there is so many problems with the rotors warping because the problem starts to happen way b4 it actually locks up and freezes. Also if you are in question of the front brakes only working the rear drums are easy to adjust!!!! Back up about 20 feet and press the brakes the rears will then self adjust. You will hear them click if you listen carefully. I know this sounds strange but it has been like this for years!!!

02 Dak 4x4, 4.7 15k miles. Rotors junk. No
warranty after 10k. Chrysler knows they are
putting junk on at factory, that's why only 10k
warranty.

I replaced rotors with Bendix and used ceramic
pads. Doing the job myself and getten parts from
Advance Auto Parts cost around $175.00.

And yes, like Big Blue QC said, buy a torgue
wrench. Best money you'll ever spend.

I have a 2000 Dakota with 80,000 kms. Have replaced rotars and pads 3 times because of pulsation. What else can I do? Or is this a continued problem with the Dakota that can't be fixed.

Well I am not the only one I am amazed I have not killed myself due to the brakes in this truck and I can't stand the ABS. Anyways I have the pulsating as well and am replacing both rotors and both sets of pads. My Rotors look like I got them from a junk yard. I think it is a disgrace what Dodge is putting on the trucks. I thought it might have been something I did ...guess not.
Are there any tricks or sticking points for me to watch out for? I have replaced Brakes on other vehicles much older than this, quite frankly I am worried how much of a bitch this will be...I have a torque wrench I ride a Harley actually 3 of them. I know all about the importance of this invaluble tool.

Having just replaced my Dakota Quad Cabs front pads and rotors I thought I'd drop a line since misery enjoys company! My truck is a 2001 with a little under 30k miles. Relatively low mileage but the rotors warped at around 18K miles and I figured...what the hell, I'll drive them until I'm metal on metal and that happened about 3 weeks ago. Bought used 01 rotors at the junk yard for $31.50 and paid $55 for Raybestos Semi metallic pads. Took me about 2 hours to do them with no major problems other then having to beat the hell out of the old rotors to get them off. But they were junk anyway since I was metal on metal. I did a lot of research on this Dakota "warped rotor" problem and what I've heard is it IS NOT just a Dodge problem. Many if not all automotive companies are looking to save a penny by using crappy components...like brake rotors! Ask any auto parts dealer and they'll probably tell you the same thing. I figured if I can get 30k or 3 years out of the brakes, I'm doing OK....of course, your mileage may vary!
Oh...and don't expect help from the dealership, they'll just take you for more money.

Does anyone have experience with extended wear on the Powerslot or EBC Rotors? Do they hold up any better than the OEMs'.

I started having problems with mine almost off the lot. All the dealer did was shrug, click his tounge a couple of times and charge me $130 to turn the rotors.

I'm really disappointed with this truck. So far, I have had the "brake problem", evaporator core, every doorlatch (including the tailgate and glove box), surging at stable speeds, ping and rattle (software upgrade), speakers, fan relay burned up the relay/fuse block assembly, 2 sets of tires, a set of balljoints, water pump, throttle position sensor and a partridge in a pear tree.

Did I mention that when the dealer turned the rotors that 2 days later the right caliper FELL OFF???

I would trade it but it's paid off and I don't know that I would trust anything else American made out there to be better. I think I'll drive this until it rusts out, then buy a Toyota.

2004 Service Manual says 85 to 115 ft-lbs. That's a 30 ft-lb slop factor.
Split the difference and go with 100 ft-lbs all around.

It's not so critical what you torque the lugs to, just so they are all the same.
