So I am looking at buying a 1999 Dakota 4X4 with the 5.2 litre V8 and I stumble across this website. So I think, what better place to see if these trucks are really worth buying? The only negatives I have heard so far (after talking to a Dodge mechanic friend of mine) are ball joints and mileage. What kind of mileage can I realistically expect? How big an effect does 4X4 have on mileage? Any other big surprises I should know about. By the way, the truck has 55,000 km on it.

Thanks for any info you can share with me!

The dakota is your best choice. Your friends are right about the ball joints but mine lasted for 120000 which i think is acceptable. But as for milage. The 5.2 is one of the better ones. My friend has a chevy s-10 with 4.3 v6 3.75 rear end and he goes through more gas then i did with a 5.9 durango. You would probably find that the v8 justs coasts your truck through everything there not overly worked like the v6. the 5.2 is also a amazing motor I also have friend mechanics and they are convinced that the reason that dodge switched to the 4.7 is because the 5.2 wasn't making money on parts. Go for the dodge.
