Message:
My truck, a 93 4X4 has a rattle in the engine up to around 2500 or 3000 RPM. I thought it may have been one of the idler pullys but with belt removed still there. My best shade tree guess at this time is valve train, either timing chain or lifters. Any trends in the 3.9 I need to be aware of before I start buying unneeded parts? Thanks.

Chris

i also have this problem with my 3.9, and i had the same idea that it might be the idler tensioner but after removing the belt the noise was still there. the magnum motors in these trucks have roller lifters and this is more than likely the problem, but i dont know if there is a easy solution. i have over 119000 miles on my truck and the noise doesnt seem to be a problem other than being annoying at idle to 2500rpm.

Chris this is just a Dodge thing!!!To the best of my nowledge from about 1988-1996 the mag 3.9-5.2 + 5.7 engines had a hydrolic roller, lifter assembly in them, these lifters are some what noisey at idle after engine warms up.This in no way will affect the life span or performance of these lifters providing the engine is given regular oil changes.just a small inconvieniance of noise idleing when hood open. This only happens on very few vehicles. So dont worry and just put her in gear and go, hope this helps your truely shrewster56..sort of sounds like a small diesel doesnt it.ITS JUST A DODGE THING!

Have you tryed adjusting your valve lash??? This 2001 Dodge Dak QC is the first American vechile I have owned in a long long time. Most of the imports that I have owned and worked on have had sloid non hydralic lifters or they were over head cam with mech. followers. You had to adjust them every 20,000-30,000 miles. I think that this might be the case with your lifter especialy with 100000+++ miles on it.

I have a 92 3.9L Magnum with 150,000 miles on it. The truck has been babied from day one and runs great. I also had this problem. I recently had to replace a water pump and decided to try and find out where the noise was coming from since it sounded like it was coming from the front of the engine. I fired the engine while I had the pump off and it did the same thing. I decided to replace the timing chain and gears while I had it apart. They were a little worn but not bad. After I got everything back together and fired it up.....same thing. Maybe it is a dodge thing. But annoying as hell.

hey sandman there is NO valve lash to adjust in a hydraulic lifter system. The oil that circulates in the engine pumps up the hydraulic lifters to the point that lash does not exist, that is the ease of maintenence on these engines. Usually when an engine gets hi miles on it as the ones that are being discussed here the hydraulic system in the lifters becomes worn, Usually due to dirt in the oil, to the point that the lifters need to be replaced as they no longer can hold enough oil in them to maintain the internal pressure in them to do the job that they are designed to do. When they go bad, at first you hear ticking (some engines may do that at startup after sitting for a few days but if it goes away in a few seconds it is OK) then after a while they rattle as Chris first mentioned. The only fix is to replace the lifters, sorry.

I started having this same noise starting at around 3000 RPM. Out of coriousity... what is a rough estimate $s for lifter replacement in a 1998 3.9L Manual Dakota? less then $500? Less then $750? less then $1000? I have no clue and am just curious.

Thanks

Summit Racing sells a set for the 5.2 for less then $100. Yes I know you have the V-6 BUT the parts fit as almost all the parts inside the 3.9 fit the 5.2 exactly. Cams cranks and distributer being the most obvious. Hey take your truck to the local tech high school after you buy them and have the kids there in auto mechanics class change them for you, they usually only charge a small shop material fee and the job is really kind of easy so up if labor cost is a consideration that might be a way to go.

I have a 98 3.9 with what sounds like a noisy lifter on the right side on startup. I could understand it being a leaky lifter that quiets after oil pressure is attained, but it is hard to believe that by its actions. The longer I let the truck sit the less noise I have on startup. I have more noise on a warm startup, after being off 30 min. to 8 hrs. than I do overnight or after the weekend. Shouldn't leaky lifters be louder after extended off time? You guys have any thoughts?

WOW! I thought it was just me! My '95 SLT 4x4 started making noise very early on (maybe 50k. It currently has 135k and is running fine, but noisy as hell!! I'm going to just run it for another year & then install a factory-fresh 3.9, along with new paint and a lift kit. I'd like to run 32x10.5s w/a 1-inch offset to pop the tires out a bit. Any suggestions??

The timing chain assembly on Gen II trucks is notorious. I had mine replaced by the dealer when I bought the truck. Easy as pie, the dealership I deal with is very small, the owner is actually the one selling the vehicles. Larger dealers, good luck getting them to pay for anything.

RE: stalling 3.9

Message:
I have a 97 dodge ram van that decided to stall ine day. Went went for a ride of about 150 miles and in doing so used up most of the gas in the tank. I found a station and filled her up and off we went. Van ran fine all the way home while on the tollway. Got off the tollway and it seems to hesitate. After the second light she died, restarted okay and after a few more miles died again. Then she ran fine all the way home (about 11 more miles). Later that day the kids took it our and it stalled a few more times. Then would not restart. The next day she started just fine and ran for about 45 minutes. I decided to take her for a spin and check it out. It stalled again and would not start again. It did that for a few days. I pulled the codes and got 12 and 55. The 12 tells me that the battery was disconnected and the 55 is the end of diagnostics. I pulled the positive to clear the codes and tried to restart only to finally run the battery down. I charged it with a trickle charge, cleaned the throttle body and hit it with starting ether and nothing. I can here the fuel pump start but I get no gas smell. Have I screwed up my fuel pump or can something else be responsible? I need help with this one.
Thanks
Mark

It's Russ, Im back from a few messages ago. I called around and you can buy the replacement gears, chain and gaskets for about $70.00 from NAPA or CHamp. Auto. I decided to go with the TSB as listed above and get the kit from Chrysler. It has the added tensioner in the kit. It cost me $129.00. The dealer put the kit in at no charge but I asked around and per Childens it would be 4 to 4.5 hours of labor. The dealer was @ 55.00 per hour. All and all NO MORE NOISE.

I picked up a '97 Dakota in Feb. Has about 80K on it. It also has the 3.9l V6. Once the warmer weather came so did the alledged lifter noise. I attacked the belt tensioner thinking this is where the noise was coming from. Well, thanks to this web site, I just replaced the timing gears and chain and installed the TSB timing chain tensioner kit. I shopped around (gears & chain $38 @ Pepboys, gasket kit/case seal $11 @ NAPA, tensioner kit $41 @ dealer) and completed the job in an afternoon. This also gave me a chance to flush out the cooling system. All told, for <$120 I fixed the nerve racking noise and did some preventive maintenance on my truck... thanks everyone!!

Do NOT waste your $50 for the tensioner. Buy the double roller chain set for $35. It is stout, will never stretch, will out last and outperform factory set, costs less, fits tighter, and does not require the oil slinger or drive plate to be removed. Pick up a new oil filter and get the timing chain seal and gasket set. Leave the end tabs on the oil pan gasket alone. You don't need to cut them off or loosen the oil pan at all for this job. Remember to buy a new oil filter because gasket particles and metal filings will contaminate your oil.
