Subject: P 0340 Check Engine Code?
IP: Logged

Message:
My check engine light came on the other day on my 2000 4.7 with a code P 0340. The factory service manual states the following for this code:

NO CAM SIGNAL AT PCM
NO FUEL SYNC

Sometimes the light stays on, and sometimes it goes off. Seems to drive okay when the light is on. So, do I have a faulty camshaft position sensor (CMP), or is it something else ??

Any help would be appreciated.

How did you get these codes?

920

The cluster is not receiving a vehicle message from the PCM.
1. Check the PCM software level and re-flash if required.
2. Use a DRB scan tool to verify that the vehicle speed message is being sent by the PCM.

921

The cluster is not receiving a distance pulse message from the PCM.
1. Check the PCM software level and re-flash if required.
2. Use a DRB scan tool to verify that the distance pulse message is being sent by the PCM.

950

The cluster is not receiving an ABS lamp-on message from the CAB. 1.Check the CCD data bus connections at the CAB
2. Check the CAB fuse.

999

An error has been discovered.
1. Record the failure message.
2. Depress the trip odometer reset button to continue the self diagnostic test.

Are you having problems with your INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ? it looks like that is all you have checked with this procedure.

The info I printed came from www.SpeedTweaks.net but it was listed for a "99" Dak Click on Tips & Tricks

How to check codes on a 1997 Dodge

OBTAINING DTC'S USING MIL LAMP
Cycle the ignition key On-Off-On-Off-On within 5 seconds.
Count the number of times the MIL (check engine lamp) on the instrument panel flashes on and off. The number of flashes represents the trouble code. There is a slight pause between the flashes representing the first and second digits of the code. Longer pauses separate individual two digit trouble codes. An example of a flashed DTC is as follows:
Lamp flashes 4 times, pauses, and then flashes 6 more times. This indicates a DTC code number 46.
Lamp flashes 5 times, pauses, and flashes 5 more times. This indicates a DTC code number 55. A DTC 55 will always be the last code to be displayed. This indicates the end of all stored codes.

OBTAINING DTC'S USING VEHICLE ODOMETER
Cycle the ignition key On-Off-On-Off-On within 5 seconds.
After a short pause, the mileage shown on the vehicles digital odometer will be temporarily deleted. After this occurs, read the DTC number displayed on the odometer. Each two-digit number will be displayed with a slight delay between numbers.
A DTC number 55 will always be the last code to be displayed. This indicates the end of all stored codes. After code 55 has been displayed, the odometer will return to its normal mode.

I had the same problem code P 0340 on my 2000 Dakota 4.7 liter. (Cam shaft position sensor) If you get this code CHANGE your sensor( cost is about $35.00) - I have been told that there is a known problem with the original design depth of the sensor.. If you are stuck and your truck won't start, try disconecting the + (positive) battery cable and turning and holding the ignition key to the start position for at least 1 minute.. Sometimes this will reset the sensor and will allow you to drive away like nothing has happened. But don't wait to change it out- it is only a 5 minute job for the Sunday mechanic. Hope this info is helpful!!

Message:
I came across this on the net some time ago...Q - Why have we been hearing complaints of lower than expected performances from some new Chrysler truck engines?
..... A - Customers with 2000 Dodge Dakotas may complain of lower than expected performance from their 4.7LVIN N engines. According to AERA's Technical Committee, the loss or intermittent loss of the camshaft position sensor (CMP) signal could cause this.
..... The loss of the CMP signal may be the result of the CMP coming in contact with the tone wheel. If that occurs, the internal electronic circuitry of the CMP may become damaged. When this happens, there is a chance that the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may become illuminated.
..... Most of these engines were inspected and repaired at Chrysler's manufacturing facility, but some engines still need to be repaired. If the engine has this condition, a select fit shim must be installed between the CMP and the cylinder head pad, around the CMP sensor attaching bolts. The shims come in four different thicknesses (.010", .020", .031", and .047"), depending on the amount of air gap that needs to be shimmed.
..... The shim may also have been glued in place to either the cylinder head or the mounting tang on the camshaft position sensor. If a technician is making repairs, he or she may overlook or lose the previously installed shim. This may cause the camshaft position sensor to contact the tone wheel when the CMP sensor is reinstalled or replaced.
..... Replacement part identifications are as follows: CMP sensor shim kit, part number (p/n) 05019089AA; Engine Cylinder Head Cover Gasket, right side p/n 53020878; and Camshaft Sensor, p/n 56028133AD.

P 0320 Check Engine Code
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 Dakota 4.7 with an error code of P0320. The vehicle shuts off and will not start for several minutes. The dealer said that the wiring harness had "stress" on it and they repositioned it, should fix it. Several hundred dollars later and the problem still exists.

Could this be the camshaft/crankshaft position sensor? Where can I find it on the engine?

Any help would greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have just had the same 0340 code, and the fix was to replace the Camshaft Sensor. Worked like a dream. But I was wondering how do I get rid of the code without the use of a scantool to do that for me.

I found out, without a scantool, you cannot reset the PCM without disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. And this means you have to go through everything else in your car that gets reset when the battery gets pulled

I had the same error code come on, on my eclipse GSTurbo. This happened after it wobbled and refused to start; it started fine about 10 minutes later. This happened twice and today the engine seems to stall and shake when the turbo is about to kick in. I don't think the turbo is kicking in anymore, but the car drives inspite of it.

Any ideas what might be causing it? Autozone diagosed the code as cam shaft position sensor A bank 1 circuit malfunction.

Thanks in advance.
