 Subject: P 0442 Code

Does anybody know what this code means or where I can go to find out? Its the code that you can see on your total miles display after you turn the key 3 times. My check engine light came on yesterday after my truck sat in the garage for 3 days. Or does anybody know how to reset it? Going to the dealer is a pain in th a$$.

Could be the gas cap look on this same forum "dealer recalls" I had that problem turned out to be a faulty gas cap.....not a loose cap a bad cap

I'm not sure if your 4.7 is the same as the 3.9,5.2,5.9 but this has to do with your Evaporative Emissions Control System.
I would say take it to the dealer unless you want to try reseting the PCM and see if it will go away.
To reset the PCM you disconect the neg. on the batt. turn your key to start for 30 sec. put neg. back on, start truck and let it idle (don't touch the gas !!) for a min. or 2, shut it off for a bit then restart that's it

Took my truck to the dealership today. They told me that the light came on due to a loose gas cap. WTF? I can't just tighten it myself? Do I have to take it in or reset the PCM myself everytime that this might happen? Oh well its not like I had to pay for it.

Yup, just got that code today! Tightened the gas cap and reset the computer and wallah! Good as new! Kinda scared me at first! LOL

This seems silly to most, but make the gas cap might be going bad. If you turn it to tighten, it should turn some and then click. Mine started just clicking (not tightening) and that's when I got the code.

I agree with dkr8611 if the code keeps returning. Mine would flash the code, I'd tighten the gas cap, reset the computer, and it would be fine...for about an hour. Then the code would kick again.
Paid $7 for a new gas cap and the problem was solved. Old one sounded like a baby's rattle when I shook it...the replacement was quiet.

I have a friend that gets the same error in her Jeep Wrangler (2001). Does anyone know how to reset the computer in one of these? I think that since it is a chrysler vehicle, the error code is probably the same. I told her to get a new gas cap. Let me know if anyone has any ideas.

I went through a few gas caps, and a about 5 months of the light coming on. finally i started with the cheapest parts on the emissions control and replaced one by one until it fixed. first part, was the purge solenoid. 30 bucks, 1 minute fix... did the trick. 6000 miles later still no light

Same thing here... have a 02 QC 4.7 v8 Light came on... dealer says to bring it in so we can drop the tank and check the pump??? I suggested the cap and they said "no no no... won't be that... bring it on in." Yeah bring it on in so I can be without my ride for 2-3 days... Gonna try the gas cap.

Had the same problem on my 2000 3.9 4x4. I took the gas cap apart and found a very rusted piece inside. The rust is keeping the valve in the cap from operating which causes it to set P 0442 code. LEAVE IT TO DODGE TO PUT A CHEAP ASS PIECE OF METAL IN THE CAP. I bet the EPA would be interested in this since it is part of the pollution control system. I hust might give them a call.

whatta joker, the EPA APPROVED the design and was required to approve it before DC could actually use the design, If the EPA had not approved the design DC would have to submit designes untill the EPA saw one that it did approve.

Intermittent problems with codes of P0442 and P0456 occur with bad/faulty gas caps. Or poorly made locking gas caps. Install OEM gas cap and reset computer by disconnecting cattery cable, turning key on; wait 30 sec. turn key off and re-connect battery cable.

Found a crack in rubber hose at end by charcoal canaster under dodge near gas tank. The charcoal canaster hose nipple is to large for factory hose, after time causing it to split then alowing outside air to enter through the crack. I rapped with electrical tape then used srink tubing to fix...

I have the 442 and the 455. I am thinking of buying a 6 dollar cap at auto zone. Jeep dealer I called wants 45 bucks for the cap. what a rip off.

Also Found a crack/very loose rubber hose where it joins to the charcoal canister located under driver's door near gas tank. Re-cut hose and used a hose clamp.
