Message: Hey, I just bought a 2000 Dodge Dakota club cab 2.5 I4. I'm having that dumb light come on too. The dealer had tightened the gas cap and it stopped. Now it's doing it again. I checked it and it will click but night feel quite tight enough. I'll bet this is definately the problem! Where should I buy a gas cap that doesn't cost too much?

Message: I first had this CHECK ENGINE light over a year ago. Somewhere in the post it told me to check my gas cap. That helped. Then later a post told me of the trick of turning the on/off ignition switch three times. That got me the code in the odometor. The vent of the cap was cleaned and that helped for sometime. I now have a locking gas cap and had to only clean it once so far. My last problem was a CHECK GAGES light does anyone have any information on this. Thanks

Message: I struggled with the same code on my 2001 Quad Cab for several months. I replaced the gas cap, and that worked for a week.
I was changing spark plugs on my truck as part of a tune-up, and noticed that the evap lines in the engine compartment were cracked. I replaced the evap lines (they look like vacuum hoses) with regular fuel line of the same size, and the P0442 code went away and has not come back (2 months)
Look in the engine compartment near the battery for a green evaporative systems access port.
Follow that hose both directions, and I bet that you will find cracked hose ends that are causing the leak. Replace the hose with fuel line hoses, and use hose clamps. Total cost ~ $13.00
No More Check Engine Light !!!
