I have a 91 Sport with a commercial automatic 4-speed tranny. It's all good until it hits 60mph, then it doesn't hit OD. It just hits the rev limiter and cuts off. If I let off the gas it goes in, any ideas?

I checked the fluid, and the fuses, the tranny shop said they would have to put it on the computer and charge me $300 for it.

Ours is doing the same thing. We were thinking we would have to put a new transmition in. It only has 65,000 miles.

Please let me know if anyone knows why they do this.

i own a 92 2wd 318 dakota. i'm the 3rd owner, and supposedly the tranny fluid was changed right before i bought it. it seems the auto trans likes to shift too fast between 1st and 2nd, and then will not go into overdrive, i've tried slipping it into nuetral, i've let off the gas, i've hammered it-nothing works! i'm in the same boat, but unfortunately, no paddle!! any helpwill be apreciated!

I had a 92 Dakota 3.9 that had a shift problem of not shifting in to O.D. Took it to Dealer they changed the Speed Sencor on the transmittion. You might check that if you have not yet.

Ok I had the same problem on my 91 But the cruise control didnt work either so if your cruise and o.d. doesnt work its most likely the speed distance sensor

Been working a my own 91 trans. Replaced it two days ago. orginal did not have od. (just bought this truck.)replacement also does not have od. Used a scanner and no codes, but od and tcc selonoids were not closing. built a jumper wire to the 3 pin connector on trans. grounded the selonoids at 40 mph and the od works. Scanner tell check computer. It control trans and Od button to lock up convertor. Tomorrow I head to dodge for Service bulletins, there are about 15 different one for transmission problem.

Mine was doing the same thing for awhile, the OD and cruse control would not work. I pulled out all of the fuses and checked them, they were all good, but when I started it back up everything worked fine. It has happened more than once, but the fuses always fix it. I think something may be corroded but I'm too lazy to look into it. BTW, sometimes the brake warning lights would be on when it did this.

91 Dakota AT. Shifts fine coming and going, including into OD....

BUT............

When I'm in overdrive going down the highway
doing about 70MPH with 2200-2300 on the tack it'll
hit a bump or something and suddenly I'm doing
3000+ and it's downshifted. If I reach up and bump
the shift lever several times it'll shift back up and the rpm's drop back down. I changed the speed sensor and it didn't affect it at all. I just pulled a trailer with a car on it about 200 miles and the thing behaved much better than when I didn't have a load on it.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's a vacuum problem. Any ideas? Thanks

I had a 91 Dodge Dakota 4x4 V6 short bed
and I had to replace the speed sensor THREE
times within 5 years. That is probably what
the problem was with your 91 Dakota.
I currently have a 2000 Dakota and have
replaced 2 different speed sensors on it.
Seems like sensors are a problem along with
ball joints and rotors in the Dakotas. This
2000 is definitely my last Dodge vehicle :-(
