Subject: bad clunk in front end when braking hard
IP: Logged

Message:
hey, a couple days ago i started to notice some popping and clunking in the steering column when i was slowing down and turning. today i had to take off pretty hard to get out of a parking lot and something in the front end clunked horribly and i could feel it in the steering column. Then, again today, when i had to hit the brakes pretty hard i felt the same horrible clunk and could feel it in the column and brake pedal. any ideas? its still under warranty so it'll get fixed free, i was just wonderin if i could tell the dealer anything to help them out. thanks!

Hank ,
I have the same problem with My "01 Dakota Motorsports Edition. The only play that I've found is in the right front wheel bearing. Not excessive, but sufficient to require a adjustment. Now that is something I could normally take care of but this spindle nut won't budge and it appears that since it isn't a castle nut / cotter pin type attachment, that a new nut is required every time the bearing is dealt with.
This only happens under left turn braking and is really noisy if it's bumpy. I'm going to let the dealer fix the problem
Let me know what you find out...

Joe

Regarding the Popping noise & Clunk on my 2wd Dakota Motorsports edition, I wound up with a whole new upper right side Control arm. This was because the ball joint was bad and the Dodge only replaces the entire piece. BUT I also had to replace the right side brake/bearing hub also. This is another one one those one piece non-serviceable items. The dealer did replace these under the warranty, but took 4 visits to solve the problem. I suspect that the bearings aren't up to the task with 16X8 wheels with that offset, but then we'd hear more from the R/T Dakota owners on that issue. I think the left side is starting to make noise now , so we'll see!
Good Luck !
Joe

hey guys, the popping in the steering column was my lower ball joints, no suprise, i've already had the uppers replaced as well, and the clunk when braking was just the RWAL Brakes, it was just noisier than i expected, take care
