Subject: MIL 0455 Evaporative Leak - Your Fix?
IP: Logged

Message:
After one visit to my service dept with a MIL 0455
(Large (gross) leak detected in the evaporative purge system), they wrote it off as a loose gas cap, though I told them the gas cap wasn't loose.

Service Mgr says this is always the resolution the first time around on a large leak, based on previous MILs, regardless of what customers say about their gas cap.

They clear the code, next morning...its back.

After reaming them out, they're gonna 'smoke' it out with a leak detection machine, now suspect the pump (large leaks don't equal loose hoses per them) (BTW, they say the 4.7 has different pumps based on load ratings and won't go ahead and order a pump before my appointment Monday)

No thoughts at all from them re: a malfunctioning gas cap.

Interested in fellow 4.7 DAK owners who had the MIL 0455, what was your final fix?

Another poster on this forum looks to have had a bad gas cap.

Thanks...

Just found out the cause of my 0455 MIL: cracked (ripped in two when pulled off) hose, located near the skid plates that runs into the cannister located in the engine bay

Not a defective gas cap.

Found via smoke/ultra violet light test.

No parts in stock, has to be overnighted (asked they take care of any other TSBs or PCM flashes needed (they already flashed for the auto tranny shifting problem)

Word of advice for anyone else going in with a 0455 MIL, check to ensure you're gas cap is tight and if so, don't let them return the truck back to you with a "Gas Cap Loose' resolution. Call before picking up your DAK, if they try to pawn this off on you, say no way and demand a smoke test to prove it, before you pick up your truck.

I had the same issue with my 2000 Dak. About a week after I bought it (new), light came on. Same issue, same gas cap excuse. On the fourth visit, I got very loud in the service area, so they replaced the entire fuel system from the tank to the fuel rail. Two days later, the light was on again, same code. Some bright mechanic decided to hose clamp all the little rubber hoses for the vapor system. 2 years now, haven't had a single problem again. Good ol' dodge dealers.

ahhh, so I get talked into bringing my truck in this past Sat b/c their best tech was going to be there. Even tho I could have used my truck to help someone move some boxes... I get called Sat afternoon that they could not pinpoint the problem! I gotta drop off again Monday morning/today. I had a somewhat frank discussion with the service manager. He tried to run the loose gas cap business on me. Told him been there, done that, and no way should a "loose" cap cause a "gross" leak code. He agreed and took it back to the shop. They call me at work and said the gas cap was broken. Some piece of plastic on the inside had cracked and was just spinning around and not sealing the filler tube...? So I guess it really was the cap, but it was not loose. He assured me they ran another smoke test after replacing the cap and found no leaks. We will see after a few computer cycles. If I get past Wednesday, I will be feeling better.

p.s. I printed this whole post to point out the suggestion about the seals... the manager brought up the little remark about "cracking skulls" and how it was unnecessary. I asked him how he would feel making 5 trips to get something fixed - no (useful) comment.

Just got mine back from the shop for the same problem. Cracked hose on the evaporative system. Hose was cracked in center of the hose located in the run through the engine bay area not on either end as is usually the case per the mechanics. They said that they have had problems with this hose cracking where the connections are made on either end but not usually in the middle. Mine originally came in as a 0442 code. I reset it to make sure it was not a loose gas cap. A week later the MIL light was on again stating 0455. This thread helped the mechnics by not letting them give me the lose gas cap excuse. Gotta always watch those guys. Had them change my oil while it was there for two days and they almost shorted me a quart of Mobil 1. Glad I checked. By the way, my truck is an '01 QC 4x4 with the 4.7L engine. Only 9,400 miles on it too. Hope this hose last longer than the original!!

Had the same MIL code two months after buyig my R/T. I had a busted gas cap. But, the dealer I went to ran the smoke test with out even having to be told. I purchased my truck at Manassas Dodge here in Virginia. The truck has been there a couple of times to take care of some noises. They are great there and understand that I am driving from Alexandria to there Dealer. About 45 minute drive. So, they triple check everything for me. Great service.

we have seen caps getting the tether stuck under the cap dan distorting the oring/seal for the cap its hard to see the seal is dented from the tether but under close inspection it can be seen also removing cap while engine running can put mil lamp on especially if vechicle is cold run less than 2-3 miles

This is probably a stupid question but the MIL light on my 2001 Quad 4x4 4.7 just came on last night at 10000 miles. Where is this code that you guys are talking about? I'm just showing the MIL icon on the dashboard.

Also, is there a way to reset the MIL without taking it in to the dealer. I really don't want to waste an entire day. Especially with Chrysler's no rental policy!!!

my truck is a 2000 4.7 so I am not sure if this still holds true - what I say is what applied for me.... you may want to have a pen and paper ready. to get the codes if you have a digital odometer is the following:
start with ignition off, then do this sequence of 1 second ignition on/offs (pause ever so briefly at each)
-turn key to ON
(full ON-not just ACC and not to start)
-turn key to OFF
-turn key to ON
-turn key to OFF
-turn key to ON (might take a second or two)

your (digital) odometer should flash and then display an error code number like 0247 or something similar. if you have multiple error codes it should scroll thru them. after all the codes I think it will go back to the odometer. after this, the problem is deciphering what the code(s) mean. I cannot remember if I found my error codes online or in a Haynes manual...?
Good Luck

This just happened to me also.
It was a bad gas cap. I had to see it with my own eyes.
You could smell the gas fumes that leaked out of the gas-cap. I wouldn't have believed it, but since the new cap. No engine light. The bad part is that the warranty had expired. I got stuck with a $50.00 bill for a new gas cap. The cap itself was only $8.50.
What a rip-off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats how my problem started. It came and went. I kept having to go to auto-zone to get the code checked and cleared. I originally thought it was the girlfriend not screwing the cap on all the way.
The problem would go away for a month or so, then the light would come on again. I got fed up and finally took it to the dealer.

I had the same thing happen to me. I have 37,000 miles and I have an extended warrenty with a $100.00 deductable. I checked the posts and started looking for gas cap problems and bad hoses. I found a hose cracked at the end and the end was falling off of the connection just above the driver side of the motor, near the canister in the engine bay. I replaced it and reset the PCM by disconnecting the battery for 15 seconds. Hopefully this will fix it but I feel pretty good about it considering I read the forum and it said to look for exactly this, as well as a few other things. This forum has saved me a ton of money, you guys are great.
