Message: Just a heads up but you can run the codes on 01 dakota quad cabs by simply holding down trip reset and during the key to the on position, sometimes it takes three times. Codes can be found at www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on code list you want, 1980-90's, up to 2001, and 2001+.

Message: OK, I got this error code on a 2000 V6 Dakota, 66k miles. I got gas about an hour after the check engine light came on, and I did find my gas cap off (which I find peculiar, but oh well). But to be sure, where on the engine are the hoses on the evap system?
Now, assuming it was the gas cap, does the computer automatically reset itself once it notices the error corrected (I read elsewhere that it may take a few longer drives for it to clear), or does it have to be reset? If so, can I reset it myself?

Message: I have been having problems with check engine light coming on and the truck (2001 Dakota) running poor during warm up with hesitations and light backfires and etc. eventually it will start to run OK then it is fine. Each time I take it in and have it checked they say it is just the evap code and cannot find anything. I was reading articles similar to this on the internet and went out and bought a new gas cap. I did not use the cap until today when it started acting up. I stopped the truck and shut it off and put on the new cap. It ran like a new truck after I did that. I just hope that is the fix. Thanks for your info!

Message: I have a 2000 Daktota 4.7 quad cab 4x4.
I stored it over winter with a battery disconnected and need to now get the emissions tested. I have an OBD-2 cable and can read status.
The status provides info on "continuous tests run " and "comprehensive tests run". All tests have RUN = YES except the "Evaporative Test". In order to pass the test I need all the tests to "RUN=YES".
Does anyone know what conditions the ECU uses to intiate and complete the EVAP testing?
ie. Fuel tank fill levels , warm-up cycles, miles traveled etc.
Any heplpwoudl be great. Thanx
