As far as I know the 2002 dakotas still do not have greasable fittings on the upper ball joints. So in my opinion no they haven't solved the problem yet.

I don't know of any stock ball joints that are greasable... I doubt that'll change.

Pete there are no aftermarket upper ball joints though.

Great site , just found a few days ago after I bought a used 1999 4 x4 Dakota V6 .So I have read and printed off numerous tips in the event I have problems. Looks like gas mileage is a concern and front end. But I thought I read in other posts that aftermarket "Moog" parts might be available.
Was that wrong or was it just some front end parts, not the upper ball joints? I just want to be ready if happens and not put stock stuff on again.

Moog does make both upper and lower greaseable ball joints for the Dak (at least the '98). I replaced both upper and lower with them. Federated Auto Parts carries them. The easiest way to replace the uppers is to remove the upper control arm and grind off the rivets using a bench grinder. A handheld grinder will work as well if you don't want to remove the upper control arm. The Moog uppers come with bolts to replace the rivets.

thanks , guys,
I went under my truck this weekend for first serious time (I have only had it a week)
ONe of the upper balljoints had a grease fitting one didn't , but I greased what I saw I could.
I also noticed torsion bar adjustment screws were uneven in the amount of thread exposed, so I evened them up and that of course got my truck sitting more level. I think I will keep it !!!
thanks

Agreed...mine is a 2001 QC with just under 50K miles...looks like I'm due for new balljoints. I was told that Moog will have the 2000+ Dakota aftermarket balljoints available very soon. I'm really not looking forward to doing this job myself, but I don't have the money to pay some shop to install the new balljoints. Oh well. Bending wrenches is nothing new to me...

I had the ball joints on my '99 Ext. Cab Dakota replaced about 2 years ago (thank God under warranty), but it just failed inspection with ... Loose Ball Joints!!!

I called the dealer, asking why a 4.5 year old car would need 2 replacement sets of ball joints, and they said "well, sometimes it just happens" ... And this is a 5-star dealership! UGH! They quoted $1100.00 to replace all four...

2003 Durango Ball Joints failed.. wheel fell off
IP: Logged

I own a 2003 Durango (Dakota Chasis) with 17000 miles. At 65mph the entire front wheel assmbly came off.. wheel went one way.. truck the other.. hit guard rail. My Insurance company is going to go after Chrysler to repay them. It's not over yet because these upper joints are still failing even on the new ones.

Just took my 2002 Dakota Quad Cab to a Dodge dealership on
advice of my mechanic who said the upper ball joints were
going dry and in dangerous condition. Service dept. "found no
problem" and refused service. Mechanic said that Dodge
doesn't make the original equipment themselves. No
recourse, it seems. When will Moog or another outfit come up
with ball joints with grease fittings for these Dakotas?

Ball joint problem

Anyone who has not changed there ball joints and think that they are bad have better change them. I was driving my 1999 dodge dakota on ball joints I suspected to be bad and my tire almost fell off as I was driving. I got it towed to a mech. shop and my ball joints wore gone. I found ball joints that have grease fittings made by Moog. I replaced the other side myself, its hard work.

don't find them for my 2002! Grrrr!

Anybody out there know where to find ball joints with
grease fittings for the 2002 Dakota?? Please??

It's obvious why DC will not have a recall. They would have to pay for all the class-action lawsuits from people injured from accidents invovling defective balljoints. My question is I have a 2003 DAK and wife has 2003 Jeep Liberty that WAS recalled and had the B-Joints replaced. I believe it's because they are not getting sued yet from the Jeep balljoints!!!!!
