Subject: 2000 4.7 Automatic - Any TSB or fix for idle?
IP: Logged

Message:
My idle speed seems to die down and almost stall, then jumps up to about 12 or 1400 rpm sometimes when I put it in gear or park. Actually it did stall twice on me. And its kind of dangerous when I put it in gear and it revs up and takes off by itself !! Is there any TSB or fix for this? Anybody else have this problem ??

I have a 2000 4.7 Auto but it hasn't done that. It's done other things...but not that.

Had to go back to the dealer 4 times to have oxygen sensors replaced - dashlights kept coming on.

Ive had this done to me before 2-3 times. I once pulled up to a light put into nuetral when the light changed put in gear, stepped on the gas and nothing. The engine had stalled. Had the radio on to loud and really wasnt paying attention. Also happened when i put it in park the RPM's will dip down, even stalled once. Dealer cant find anything. Just have to see if more people complain about it and maybe they will do something.

The problem is the throttle position sensor. This will occur when there engine calibartions change at around 15,00 miles. This is something that the warranty will fix. This occurs with a lot of dodge trucks Dakota and full size.

I have the same problen on a 98 3.9 4x2. It idles rough and when shifting from Drive to Park, it almost stalls. Brought it back to dealer and they installed a new idle air control motor. This did not fix the problem. Gas milage is teriable.

If the problem disapears when the co-pilot is activated while hooked to the ADL it is a power fluction problem. Along the left fender there is a splice in the pos. battery cable. If you solder this conection and re seal the bundle it will fix this problem.

I took my 2000 QC in for cold start stumbling and front end clunking (6th time for that now). Mine has the 4.7L and auto tranny. They fixed the stumbling with a engine computer software upgrade. A side benefit is it also fixed the lopey/erratic idle it had. increased idle speed by 50-100 rpm, which is exactly what needed to be done. I always thought it idled too low, hence the roughness. can't tell its running now. It idles at a dead smooth 600rpm (by the tach) with the a/c off. No change to a/c idle speed. Now if I can just get them to fix the clunking....

There was a recall back last year for the 4.7, that helped emissions. Unfortunately this recall resulted in a low idle concern, a rough idle start or stall concern. December mopar came out with a TSB to solve this concern. My Dakota now idles about 950rpm, it changed a litte when I installed a 3inch exhaust with a 2 stage flowmaster but doesnt stall or idle irratically anymore, matter of fact idles kind of lopey as if I had installed a large cam.

Anyone know of an aftermarket computer chip available for 4.7L 2000 Dakota? I took mine to the dealer for poor idle quality, and off idle hesitation. Dealer said that Throttle body was dirty and they cleaned it under warranty, but it still runs the same. One hell of an engine otherwise.
I guess I will have to wait for the aftermarket to program this engine because Chrysler cant seem to get it right.
Let me know!!

UPDATE!!

Well since the dealer offered no help in fixing my erratic idle I took it upon myself to find a solution.
I should let you know that I am a second owner at 33000 miles, so I don't know if the rough, low idle has always been a problems with this truck (2000 4.7L Dakota).
Well after the throttle body was cleaned to no avail, I decided it wouldn't hurt to try some fuel system cleaner. I think the brand was B12 Chemtool? But any good strong cleaner should work. The type I used said "Do not use more than one can every 4000 miles (doesn't harm Catalytic converters or other emissions equipment".
Well I only had a had a half tank of gas even though it can treat up to 22 gallons (extra strength, HA, HA).
After the 1/2 tank was gone I filled the tank and since I filled the tank I haven't had any problems with erratic/ rough idle. I noticed that before when the idle was rough if I turned on the A/C the RPM's went from 500 to 700. Now the truck runs at 700 at idle without the A/C, and everything is fine.
I will perform an extended test to see if the problem returns? So far I am thrilled!!

P.S. There are some gimmic fuel injector cleaners out there. I suggest looking for something extra strong like I found or something made by a good name like BG products.

Whoa! This is wierd. I have had this same prob with my 2001 dak qc 4.7. I thought it was just a dodge thing. When I first start it up idles fine. After it warms up low idle 500rpm's. If you kick in the ac it jumps to about 700rpm's. Some times it has almost stalled out. If I am driving and slow down put it into N the rpm's drop way low like below 100. That doesn't seem right. I wound what the dealership would have to say. Oh and a chip doesn't help any cause I have one on it. jat

Dakota SLT auto full time 4x4. Sometimes on startup will rev way up..over 1200 then back to 600. Then on the freeway tach will surge from 2500 to 2800 and back and forth, even with cruise on and flat ground. Put on Airaid intake and catback and now I can hear the thing surging. Taking it in tomorrow to a tranny shop. Had another shop tell me that there were tsb's about it.
Good truck, runs great has 75000 miles and bought extended warantee when I bought it but only covers breakdown stuff. When I step down and let it go thru the gears it does fine.

Just wondering if anyone else having same issue

Call your dealer's service dept and ask about TSB 18-003-02 Flash Update PCM for "Performance Enhancements"
I just had this done on my rig today drove it 12 miles it did change the shift points and my service advisor said he definitely noticed the idle changed after the flash.

FYI this problem does not pertain just to Dakota's 4.7l. I encountered the same problem on my 2004 4.7l 1500 ram. It is going into the shop thursday for diag. I percieved the problem as stuck injector or fuel filter but after pulling the injectors and replacing the fuel filter i got the same problems... i 'll keep you posted. (vehicle is under factory warranty - will post what ever fix they try)
