Subject: Catalytic Converter Problems? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2.5L 98, manual, with 30,000 miles and I am on my 3rd catalytic converter! The 1st one that was changed was making an awful rattling sound a little over a year ago. The second one did not make the rattling noise...loss of accleration and power especially in first and second gear with a "hissing" noise, when I would accelerate. Dealer said the cat. conv. clogged up. Please e-mail me if you had similar problem. Dealer said "this is a problem with the Dakotas".

Message: Our 3.9L '88 Dakota still has its complete original exhaust system with 170,000 miles since new(engine o'hauled at 145,000 miles and 4500 hrs of operation - two O2 sensors R&R'd since new). Gotta keep the fuel mixture right and the air pump system working. We also use an hour meter to track off-road time for maintenance (150 - 200 hours = 3K - 4K miles for most folks).

Message: Felix -
I, too, am on my 3rd Cat. I just ordered the carsound cat from speedtweaks though. I'm hoping it's a little more reliable.
The third one (current) rattled for about 3 mos. then calmed down. I'm getting the car sound cause I want higher quality and better flow/sound.
Dodge kept telling me it was an internal weld issue on the cat. The first two were replaced under warranty. I didn't bother taking it in once the warranty was out and the 3rd one went south.

Let me know how that CAT works out please. I'm in the same dilema as you and I was thinking about purchasing that Carsound CAT or just remove the whole cat and put that handy kit from speedtweaks on the O2 sensor. Keep us updated,
thanks,
Bill

Check your warranty booklet Cat as covered under federal emission requirements, they have to be covered for something like 8yrs/80k miles or something, longer than the factory norm!

Message: Cats are a ripoff, I had a '95 Ram and went through 3 cats before I traded it. First one went with only 28k. I've got a friend that installs these for a living and he says he buys them wholesale for avg. of $35 each, so if you're paying a ton to get one put on by the dealer, find a reliable independent installer.

Also fo rthose of you that have had it replaced under warranty what steps to you take to get it done at the dealership?
Thanks

Message: I just had my cat replaced by the dealer 2
weeks ago after reading about it here. It was
easier than I expected. Because I read here
that some guys paid the dealer for the cat
replacement, and because I've dealt with
dealers when I ran a parts house, I expected
them to try and shaft me on the deal. But
when I called and described my problem, the
guy immediately told me it was under warranty
and told me to bring it in. Easy as that.

Message: There was a severe rattling coming from
underneath on the passenger side which was
pretty loud at idle; the best way I can describe
it is to say that it sounded like a bolt or a large
nut was being tossed around inside the cat
(although at the time I didn't realize it was the
cat). In my case, the sound disappeared at
higher RPMs. I do have the stock exhaust.
According to the guy at the dealer, it's a well
known problem, so my guess would be that
even with your cat-back exhaust, they should
still be able to replace it. You might want to
check the websites that were posted here on
6/1/02 by 829 to see if there's any info about
the warranty being voided.

Message: I've seen two specific kinds of Chrysler Cat
Converter issues. The more common one is
the rattle. it is an internal weld issue between
the substrate and the external housing of the
cat, alias, the shell. Nothing as an owner that
you can prevent.
The other, albeit less common is clogging.
How many of you guys have gone to 30k
without changing spark plugs? Probably most
of you. There, in my opinion, seems to be a
correlation to regular ignition maint (lack of)
the loading up of o2 sensors with carbon and
too much raw fuel getting into the exhaust.
Two things I would recommend for maint. on
any Dodge truck. New plugs every 15K as well
as a transmission service for all you slush
box owners. I know it seems silly, but let's just
say I have had ample opportunity to see how
these beasts break and I can't recommend it
enough...

Message: Question for BDubyadubya how do you keep the check engine light from coming on once the converter is removed? This is going to affect other systems by taking the cat out of the exhuast. The ECM moniters the exhaust before and after the conv. with o2 sensors. Do you just drive around with the check engine light on?

Message: No eliminating the o2 sensor from the sytem is even worse. Then the check engine light will definetly come on. The truck will not run right at all because then the ecm will go into what is called a preset mode. This means that it will not use any information from the sensors on the truck to run right. There is a set of pre set instructions from the factory that help the engine "limp" along till any problem is fixed.
