Subject: Clunking under front-end IP: Logged
Message: I have a 98 sport club cab and the other day I started to notice a clunking sound under the front end. Usually while coasting. I had the truck in the air with all 4 wheels spinning. I can't duplicate the noise in the air but as soon as I put it down and take it for a ride it is back. It is also getting worse very rapidly. Does anyone have any ideas? I only have 40000 miles on it and don't tow or plow with this truck.

Message: i heard someone else talking about this before, i think he found the bolts that holds the upper a-arms on was loose. might start there then make sure your body mounts are ok. on speedtweaks page there is a section under tips/tricks that some of the body mounts are worn and make a clunking noise.

Message: I have a similiar problem. Mine comes after a couple of rains. I have to pull the calipers off and reapply high-temp grease to the slide contacts of the knuckle. Worth a shot, good luck.

Message: Dakota A-arm bushings have been a problem, the passanger side seems to be the side most are complaining about(on 3.9/5.2/5.9) because the manifold heat speeds up the dry rotting or failure of bushings. If you didn't already try this with the truck up in the air, you may be able to identify where the sound is by trying to see if you can move either front tire in any direction that it shouldn't. The same way you check balljoints would probably work. Just a thought, if you have 4wd, maybe check the front a-arm where torsion bar is keyed. I don't recall, but there may be bushings there too? Good luck with tracing down the problem.

Message: I have a 93 Dodge Dakota 4x4. It makes a clunking in front end when taking off. In cool weather it doesn't start until you drive for approx. 2-3 miles. Does not do it when in 4-wheel drive. I have had it to Les Schwaub Garage twice and they can't seem to find anything wrong with it. Can anyone help?

Message: I still have not found an answer to the noise coming from the front end. It totally stopped for the longest time now it is back. It seems to have something to do with the brakes. Does anyone else have any ideas?

Message: My 2000 4x4 had clunking at the driver's side front end with hitting certain bumps, and turned out to be the sway bar bushings. Dealer replaced it and it was good for 30,000 mi, but now it does it again when the weather is around 30-40 degrees or colder within the first few minutes of driving.

Message: I don't know about clunking, but I had a very annoying squeaking grinding noise whenever turning or going over bumps. 8000 mi. on truck. I called two different dealers and asked them what it was. They never heared of it before. I found noise coming from sway bar end bushings. Popped the two bolts on each side out & rolled sway bar down & removed hard plastic bushings from ends & greased. reinstalled and problem gone! New truck again!

Message: To Ironhead:
Good detective work. Had seen the same
thing on a Durango and it was a BITCH to find.
Not too common either. That's why no one
had heard of it. I had to isolate it in a parking
lot with a ton of speedbumps to duplicate it
reliably. After that, the rest was easy!

Message: I am having the same problem with my 97 Chevy S-10, clunking under the passenger side pretty much all the time. Since I just purchased it, I know nothing about this type of problem. Strangely, my 84 Ford Bronco had the exact same sound eminating from the same area and no one could ever tell me what was wrong with it either. I guess I am just destined to having this annoying sound go with me wherever I may roam!

Message: I have a '98 4x4 EC and my clunking was from the balljoints. Major issue with the daks. It doesn't hurt to replace the bushings and tierods as well. Actually, you should replace the rotors as well. The list could go on :)

Message: Hello.
I have a 2002 Dakota Quad Cab with a clunking under the front end while I and braking and turning into driveways. Have had it at the dealer twice, first time said it was an ABS problem, now it is a hub problem. Hopefully this is the final fix. I do not think they really know what is going on. Anyone got some other tips for me?????

Message: It's me again. Well, it wasn't the joints afterall. The annoying clunking on my passenger side was somehow related to having warped brake-thingys. Sorry, I do not know vehicular terminology - only medical. So I hope this helps someone. All I know is when I got it fixed I never heard that sound again. Thank God. Best of luck to ya'll.

Message: I have a 1990 Bronco , it has the 302, when I take a left or when I am approaching a stop a noise, which seems to be coming from the right side, sounds like gears are rubbing but not engaging. I've replaced the bearings and the Hub assembly, but still can not determind where or what is creating the noise. I am able to move the front shaft assemly by hand with no problems ,I've inspected the universal joints they don't seem to have any play. so without the 4 wheel drive engaged and having the wheel bearings replaced what else should I look at, Any ideas. Thanx

Message: My problem is the ball joints. I have a 98 which has the 7/70 extended warranty, and I talked to the dealer about ordering uppers and lowers. He called me back today and said the uppers he can get in a few weeks but the lowers, there is a nation wide back order so it will be MONTHS before any are available. Sounds like CD knows these are a problem but pulled all the bad BJ's and is trying to replenish there stock with better ones. Sounds like they will do things under wraps instead of doing a nationwide vehicle recall.

Message: I have an 01 reg cab short bed 4x4. I had a similar problem at about 18000 miles. I took it to the dealer and they traced the noise to the left front. It was two pieces of the frame that were popping together. They say it was b/c the truck had settled but? A quick hit with a punch fixed the whole thing. Hope that helps you out.

Message: INFO FOR ALL!!! I have a 2003 Dodge Dakota 4X4 Quad cab (bought new last year). My truck now has only 23000 miles. Same front end clunk's as everyone describes. The dealer has now replaced both upper and both lower control arms (ball joints as assemblies). Noticably tighter again (as new) but still not completely without noise. I think sloppy brake calipers is what I am hearing now. Asking the dealer (WHY?) has been a complete WASTE of my time! GET IT RIGHT CHRYSLER!!!
