Subject: Need Help 2001 Dakota Problems IP: Logged
Message: I have a 4.7 2001 Dakota w/ 25k miles on it. I've have following problems:
1. Hearing noise in left front end when I make hard left turns
2. It's lurching sporadically after I've been stopped for a couple of seconds. Ex: I'll slow normally to stop at a light, sit a few seconds, then feels like I've been hit in the rear because it throws the whole truck foward.
3. Front end vibrating while driving - not while braking
Two different shops agreed there's something going on in the left front end. First shop said they thought it was the left rack mount bushing, left upper control bushings, torsion bar, sway bar. Second shop said go to DODGE.
It's been at DODGE 2 days - they don't see a problem w/ the left front end! They can't replicate the problem #2 & said the diagnostic test showed no errors on the transmission. They said prob #3 is due to warped rotors. Warped rotors on truck w/ 25,000 miles & normal breaking??? Most of my trucks I've had over 100k on them & turned the rotors only 1 time!
Can anyone offer any suggestions/help. I'm going into the shop on monday to get under the rack w/ the guys - any guidance/direction/suggestions would be more than appreciated.

Message: Some of the symtoms you describe are similar to the '99 Jeep Laredo that had a brake caliper clip loose on the front. I think that is the way they identified the problem. Anyway make sure front brake pads are as they should be. I suspect the designs are similar.

Message: Warped rotors are very common on these trucks. Doubt thats you issue, but I wouldn't be surprisedif they are warped, I just installed my second replacement set at 53,000.
My opinion, throw a very loud fit in the middle of the Dodge dealership and make them start replacing parts until its fixed. I had a check engine light when my truck was 2 weeks old, code for fuel vapor leak. They tried three times, couldn't fix it, light came back within a week each time.
I got loud at the service counter and they decided to do anything I wanted to shut me up. My whole fuel system was replaced from the fuel rail to the tank, and I supervised the whole thing for about 7 hours. Haven't had a problem with that since. Mostly, I made them hose clamp all the fittings (originally just had the hoses pushed on for all the vapor recovery stuff).
Sometimes, you just have to be mean to get what you deserve.

Message: Thanks everyone for your input! I went to the dealer - had research, my mechanics info in writing & tsb's to fix my prob. Dodge said b/c they couldn't recreate the prob they weren't going to do anything for me - even w/ a tsb that gives an exact detail of what my complaint was & even though my mech listed the probs he saw (of course, the noise in the left front end & the tran lurching after I've stopped both are sporadic & I couldn't for the life of me get it to do any of those things when I took the guy on a test drive). While I understand the need to recreate probs b/f you fix them, it's frustrating b/c my warranties up in 11k miles! They said they'd document it & next time it happened to bring it in. Unfortunately, I have a feeling like the 'battle' has just begun. Thanks to all who replied to me though - atleast it showed me that (1) I'm not the only one who has experienced these same problems w/ the truck (2)I'm not alone in getting blown off by the dealer!

Message: Hey Deb dont laugh but I think the truck lurching after you come to a stop is the gas in your tank sloshing back and forth. It only does it when you have a certain amount off gas I think about 3/4 full.I have had the same problem.I have not had other two problems so cant help you.

Message: My '01 QC with 4.7L exhibited the "Ex: I'll slow normally to stop at a light, sit a few seconds, then feels like I've been hit in the rear because it throws the whole truck foward." that you mention. Almost felt like somebody tapped the truck from the rear with their vehicle. Anyway, my Chrysler Dealer did a computer upgrade and since that time (over 10,000 miles ago) the problem stopped and has never returned. That little clunk you hear on slow tight turns is typical of the truck. Bill in NY

Message: I had a tranny problem that I couldn't recreate when the truck was at the dealer. But when they found a TSB on it, they said they could fix it without seeing it happen. What's their reasoning on not applying the TSB info to your truck? Do they think it's something else? Just doesn't sound right.

Message: My 2000 Dodge Dakota has had brake problems every 3000 miles (YES I said 3000)! I have had to turn and replace the rotars and rear drums both at the dealer and at an outside garage, using both factory and after market parts. The dealer has replaced all brake parts (maybe 6 times- I've lost count). I am still experiencing "hopping" and shaking to a stop when I brake. Has anyone heard of a class action suit or recall for this problem?

Message: I have the 4.7 and a stick. I get the clunk in tight turns. Also, with my foot on the clutch, transmission out of the picture, I can feel the surge. I attribute it to the gas slosh.

Message: My 2001 4x4 4.7 was clunking on fight turns only, Dodge couldn't figure it out so I had to jack my truck up in thier shop to show them the upper ball joint was bad, I get the hit in the rear bump at times to. The truck did this all the time when new now that it has 14000 miles on it it only does it once a week now.

Message: I just had the lurching fixed. My truck would do this lurching at a light and also while driving I could see the rpms go up a couple of 100 intermitantly. The dealer did a code scan and told me it was my cruise control module, I said no way becuase it did it when not in crusie. The dealer then hooked up what was called a co-pilot. When you experience the problem you press a button and it records the previous 5 seconds on the computer. This info was downloaded to dodge and they came back instantly and said it was a throttle position sensor. The dealer wanted $265 to change that out. It was two screws and took five minutes. I did it and the problem went away.

Message: I wouldn't worry about the warentee being up soon. Go back in and make sure they document your complaint. As long as they are aware the problem existed while the car was under warrentee, they have to fix it even if the warentee expires. My mom had this happen on her Explorer. Had a strange intermitant creak from the suspension. Never happened for the mechanic. Ten miles out of warrentee, something finally broke and Ford fixed it as a warentee claim.

Message: Hey there! I own a 2002 4x4 and recently experienced a 4 wheel drive issue. When I switch to 4H the light blinks and refuses to engage. Has anyone experienced this? The dealer said the electric motor sticks when you don't use the 4 wheel for a while.
Thanks!

Message: The #2 problem is something to do with the gas in the tank. I have the same problem and it only happens when there is about 3/4 of a tank of gas, the gas is essentially slushing forward. Not all the time, but sometimes it will happen enough for me to notice. And as always I look at the gas gauage, and it's 3/4 full

Message: I have a 2001 w/ approx. 52,000 miles. I have had the rotor problems as everyone else has listed. I just got used to it and adjust accordingly.
The question I have is this:
We had a cold snap this year and one morning I whent out and started the p/u and the check engine light alluminated.
Took it to my mechanic he ran diagnostics and he wants $298.00 to replace the O2 sensor.
I looked under the truck and found the sensor easy to reach. Is his bill reasonable, or can I just by one and throw it in?
Will the light go out if that is the problem, or will the comp. have to be rebooted?
Thank you for any advice.

Message: I would check on the price of either a Bosch O2 sensor or one from Dodge. The third generation O2 sensors used in cars and trucks today are significantly more expensive than those used in older models during the 80's and 90's.
As a professional tech, I don't consider that to be too unreasonable a price. As for changing it yourself, go for it if you have the tools. Sometimes the heat from the cats has a tendency to cause the sensors to get fused into the bung and requires heating via a torch to get it loose. Another thing to note is that your truck likely has at least two if not more 02 sensors on it. Did your mechanic mention which one was faulty?
As for the computer, the codes will need to be cleared once the truck has been fixed.
One last thing - check your owners manual - sometimes emission parts are covered for 80-100k miles.
