Message: My 2001 Dodge Dakota is being repaired because of a short somewhere in the wiring. The way this was discovered was with the headlights and break lights going off intermittently while driving. However, the engine was not affected. The lights finally completely died at the dealer. The mechanics took the dash board out but were unable to find the problem. Currently, they are checking further to see where the short is while the cost of the repair continues to climb. Has anyone had any problems with this?

Message: My truck was only 4000 miles OUT of warranty (I drive a lot) and I got stuck with a $600 tab for a manufacturing defect. Not only that, but the dealer (Lawrence Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge in Richmond, VA) broke my ash tray and refused to fix it for free saying that it was that way when I brought it in. I think I would have noticed it hanging down, don't you? Anyway, after calling Chrysler 3 times and arguing with the dealer, do you think I got any kind of break? Nope. Dodge = rip off and so does Lawrence Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge. I will never buy another Chrysler product as long as I live.
I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else with a 2001 Dodge Dakota has had electrical problems like this. Sounds to me like a recall might be in order. Hard to tell how many accidents might have been caused by this manufacturing defect since your lights will go out without warning while driving at night.

Message: My '98 Dak CC just recently had the same problem with the headlights shorting out. The short was at the wiring harness on the passenger side that caused both lights to stop working. I was *lucky* to locate the short as the lights came on when I was pulling out the right bulb. I found some wear on the wires coming out of the harness and taped them up w/ electrical tape. Everything works fine now & I have new harnesses on order. Your short might be up front instead of in the dash.

Message: Sounds to me like there is a major defect in the Dodge Dakota and one that possibly has caused some accidents. Can you say "CLASS ACTION"??? However, I guess I got Chrysler back when I filed for bankruptcy and surrendered the piece of crap. Good riddance! You know, I might have tried a little harder to keep it if I knew they would stand behind it and knew I could get reliable service. As it was, it was a liability on its own.

Message: My lights went out also. But mine went out because the headlight switch itself was broken. I knew it was broken because I could hear the contacts bouncing around when I took it out and shook it.
I did have a short with my overhead trip computer. The dealer had my truck for two days and could not find the problem. I found it myself in 15 minutes. The gears for the emergency brake were rubbing on a wiring harness. Eventually it wore through a couple of the wires.

Message: MY HEAD LIGHTS WOULD GO OFF AND ON AND FINALLY COMPLEATLY WENT OUT. TURNS OUT THAT IT WAS ACTUALLY THE SWITCH TO TURN THE LIGHTS ON HAD SHORTED IT SELF OUT. A 27 DOLLAR PART AND ABOUT 1/2 AN HOUR TO TAKE THE DAST APART, AND THEIR GOOD AS NEW!

Message: There are completely different problems listed in this thread. Go back to my original post. ALL the lights kept going out. NOT just the headlights. NOT just the breaklights. And it was a $600 dollar short in the wiring harness somewhere. Like I said, the Dodge is gone. I'm driving an Isuzu Trooper and a Ford Mustang. No problems whatsover. Go figger.

Message: I have a 98 dodge dakota and had the same problem. The electrical wasnt under waranty and the dealership wanted $60 an hour to find out what was wrong with the truck.so i took it to my freind who does all the customising and maintnace on my truck and it only took him 20 min to find out that it was the tow haul wires had been shorted out by water and dirt over time and put a new wire harness and bought a cover for when i am not using it. I have not had a problem sense.

Message: I also have a problem with headlight and dash lights. First no headlights. Replaced the light switch four times. Now I have dash or headlights but not at the same time. Is there a problem with these switches. Question? when replacing the switch do you need to press the button on top of switch to put the knob back in switch or is this just for removing switch knob. I still can't drive like this. Please help
