Subject: Stalls at will!
IP: Logged

Message:
I hav a '90 Dakota, 3.9 V6. It stalls at traffic lights, while driving, while parked, you name it! There is no set pattern, no advance warning (coughing, power loss, etc.), all other funtions stay on, engine just shuts itself off. I've changed the fuel filter, dist. cap, rotor, coil, still does it. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I have the same issue with a '97 Dakota.

Almost 1 year of this behavior, $4000 invested in "Fixes", and Dodge still can't even duplicat or figure the issue out....

ITS' THE "DISTRIBUTOR PICKUP" !!!!!! Yes Yes, a donut shaped lil' $40 piece of plastic that sits in the distributor and tells the engine control computer when to fire the spark plug!
I had the same problem with my 88 dak. (go to the dealer for this part) (my advise) turns out that the distributor pickup part # has been changed 8 times. that means that dodge had alot of probs with this part, too bad they never told us
symtons include: random, intermitient stalls!
driving condition does not matter.
gimmi an email if ya have any other questions!

Is it an automatic? If so.... drop the pan, and check to see if there's any metal in the pan, if so its probably that the Torque converter is shot... Just happened on my 92, exact same symptoms... Hope I can be of some help. Oh yeah...... IF the guys at the shop says he wants over $1100 to do it, find omeone else or do it yourself.... I put a whole new tranny and torque converter in mine for $900, I did the work.

run the error code messages...i cant remember if its 3 or 5 but turn the key to the on position then to the off position, like i said its either 3 or 5...you'd prolly come up w/ a error message code about a short in the alternator field like i had w/ my 1990 dakota 3.9l

My 90 Dak was doing the exact same thing and I was replacing everything on it and nothing helped. The first place to start is to find out if its giving you an error code. turn the key on off on off and then back on and leave it. You will see the "check engine" light come on and start to flash. all the codes are in a 2 digit format 12 or 27 or 55 follow me!?!? 55 meansthere aren't any more codes to show. After you get yours codes, you will know where to start looking. If you get a 27 error code, replace your fuel pressure regulator, that is the error that I had and you are describing the exact symptoms that I had.

I have the same code 27 for my 92 dakota. I willl check the fuel regulator. I checked the vacumm line and it had vacumm. I will test the regulator. A friend told me that it was the fuel pump. I hope not because I don't want to drop the tank and the pump is very expensive.

My 92 Dak is in the shop and my mechanic said the distributor gear is shot and the block bushing is wiped. Installing the bushing requires honing after installation. Two week wait on tools to do job. I have been having the same problems with stalling except mine was also eating rotors. So whats next after having to rent a car,?.

I have the same problem with my 92 dakota. Starts good fist thing in the morning. After about 1 min of driving it starts missind and backfireing. I have had no codes and replaced the pickup coil. Nothing has changed it. Also had it put on a snapon scaner and no codes. But my understanding is that it is the oilpump gear on the distributor. I will replacing it in a week or two so Ill let all you know if it fixes it.

Same problem here. 1987 v6 4x4 auto. Went through a motor (previous owner didnt know what max towing 3500lbs meant). While it was down replaced the radiator, water pump, flywheel, torque converter, and odds n ends (hoses etc..), a couple of months after that it started stalling. Replaced distributor, cap, coil, rotor, plugs, wires, fuel pump, rebuilt carb, and got a new starter, none of it worked. I'm at a loss for the cause.

I had the exact symptom on a 90 a Dakota. A Mopar mechanic friend of mine instantly replaced the aforementioned "pickup" underneath the cap and rotor. I never had a problem with it again. Its funny that he happened to have a stack of them in his garage.....

I have a question for you guys, I have the same probem with my 92 V6 dakota. Was the stalling a slow progression from once a month or so to the piont where it was everyday. Or did the problem just start not getting better nor worse in terms of frequency?

You guys are all wrong had the same problem with my dodge.
It's a clogged cat. Trust me. I changed everything trying to "fix"
the problem. Nothing worked . Started doing like once or twice
and the more often.. It would stall if let it sit and it would start
back up no problem. Had me stumbed for months. Finally one
day the exhaust actually blew off and I got a new exhaust. And
haven't had a problem since.
