Subject: Missfiring and burnt smell IP: Logged
Message: I own a 2001 3.9 Dakota. At least once a day when I hit the gas the truck missfires.I have taken it to the dealership several times. They hook it up to the computer and tell me there is nothing wrong. The last time I took it in they replaced the wires and the plugs, and it was fine for about 2 weeks. It's missfiring again and now, aftr driving for about twenty minutes the inside of my cab smells like burnt hair.I also only get 12mpg city and 14mpg hway.I'm taking it to the dealership this week, but they will probably say the computer doesn't detect any problem. Any suggestions?

Message: Next time you are at the dealer for a misfiring problem ask them to check the intake plenum pan gasket for blowout, there was a TSB on the older dakotas . This will also give you spark knock under load and possibly some oil consumption

Message: The smell is from the cat converter getting hot because of the misfire, raw gas going through it. Usually smells more like rotten eggs, but burnt hair works too.

Message: never seen plugs cause misfire although have seen plugs carboned up so bad from runnin way too rich to not spark. Usually misfire is caused by shorted, broken plug wires or something in the distributer or ignition modual being bad, or a bad coil.
