Message: I'm dropped my truck off at the dealer this morning. It's not under warranty so I may have already made a really bad mistake. Anyhow, the problem is as follows: I can't get the truck into gear while the engine is running. The stick will not move into position. If I turn the truck off I am able to get the gear in place (engine not spinning). So what does this indicate to all yall dakota experts? How much do you think it will cost? Does this have the chance of being a trannsmition problem? It has 44K miles on it.
Thanks,
-Greg

Message: Sounds like your pressure plate is not disengaging. Have you replaced it recently, did you use a pilot shaft? Just some thoughts.
Good luck

Message: Todd:
I haven't replaced anything in the truck except oil and spark plugs. It's a 2000 Dodge Dakota 44k miles.
Update:
The dealer(mechanic) called me and said that the master cylinder(clutch) has failed and that a new one will run me $490 installed. So I gave permission to fix that ( I'm low on funds but can pay that much ). And he said the truck would be ready the next night (friday).
*Friday night*
I just called the dealer to ask if it's ready to be picked up and he tells me that after replacing the master cylinder the truck still doesn't work because the clutch is bad too! and that will be an additional $720. This smells fishy to me. I mean, they called me and told me the master cylinder is bad so I ok'd that repair work at $490. I can afford JUST that. Now they tell me I need a clutch, but, did I really need a master cylinder? I drove my last car 190K miles and never replaced the clutch, I know how to drive a manual. What causes this? Is it likely I had a crappy clutch and the master cylinder was fine? Ugh. Anyinput is appreciated greatly!
Thanks,
-Greg

Message: If anyone is interested:
I picked the truck up today. The dealer called me and told me the clutch is actually ok and the cylinder thingy just had an air bubble in it. So, go figure. Makes me wonder if the *bad* original cylinder just had an airbubble...
Thanks

Message: Your problem sounded like it was your throwout bearing going out. Which will cause the pressure plate not to disengage which if you are going to change the bearing change the clutch. They quoted me 460 for replacing that but i cant afford that because i can do it my slef but you have to find someone that sells the clutch. sorry i couldnt help you before you had to spend all that money. Master cylinder is an easy job that you could ahve replaced easy.

Message: I have a 1999 dodge dakota 3.9 engine. I have
changed the clutch, master cylinder, and throw out
barring. Someone said that I might have the clutch
plate in backwards but I went and looked and it was
in correctly, but the truck still wont go into gear.
What else could it be?
