Message: Hi DOER. I also have a 2002 3.9 and I don't have a knock between 1200 and 1400 RPMs but I do notice that there is a difference when the truck is cold. On a real cold day, the engine sounds a bit harsher when shifting from 1st to 2nd. The RPMs remain the same but it sounds so loud (live it's revving higher) on the 1 to 2 shift. However, after about 5 to 10 minutes or so when it warms up, things are status quo. Any thoughts on this?

Message: Daniel, from what you describe I'd guess it's the fan clutch, but I've never had one make the noise for that long. Usually a minute or two.

Message: Thanks JustRed. Now that I think of it, you're right, it is for only a couple of minutes. It usually lasts about 2-3 stops on my street but only from a cold start. If I start it up and let it run in the driveway for about 5 minutes then there isn't a problem. Is this a normal thing for Dakotas?

Message: Yes, very normal, and not just for Dakotas. My old S-15 Jimmy did that every morning for the 13 years that I owned it.
This is one case where "they all do that" is true. LOL.

Message: I just purchased a new 2002 Dodge Dakota Ext. Cab 4 wheel drive. I have 500 KM on it. The wind noise in the cab at about 50 miles per hour is unbelievable. It sounds like you are constantly driving in a wind storm. Because it is new I don't want them to start putting shims or anything else in the doors. Has anyone else had this problem?
