the problem when I was changing the front

ran out of them when I separated the spindle
from the upper A-arm and they both would
allow the spindle to move in and out about

Your "friendly dodge dealer" COUGH, COUGH,
will only replace the upper or lower arm with
the same P.O.S. non-greesable junk. I
replaced mine with MOOG from CarQuest.
Oh, I almost forgot, the lower left brake caliper

removed the pin! I had to raise holy hell at the
dealer to get the spindle replaced.

I have an 01 4.7 ext. cab and have all kinds of rattling and clunking under the front end. I have 27,000 miles and it has been getting worse. Sometimes when I apply the brakes I hear a clunk. I have pulsating in the rotors and brake pads too. Were you able to replace the ball joints only with the Moog's that are for the 99 Dakota's? Or did you have to replace the control arms too? I love my Dakota, power and styling, but this stuff kinda sucks. I feel like I shouldn't have to be spending money already and I really would rather not deal with the Dodge Dealership. Also too my front shocks seem kinda bouncy and the rear end doesn't seem stiff enough when I push down on the bed.

Anyway, (for anyone interested) I replaced the

Moogs for a '98. I had to drill out the mounting
holes in the new Moogs from 5/16" to 7/16"
because that's the size the holes were in the

after I read your post under the MOOG's thread, I relaced the right upper ball joint on my 01' with a MOOG part for the 99's.
Drilled out the holes in the MOOG to 7/16. It works perfect. I looked at the OEM ball joint after it was removed, it was bone dry, and I was able to move it around easily, it had no resistance whatsoever. It was completely shot.
My truck doesn't make that annoying clunk and rattling anymore. Thanks again Lemmers.

Message: I bought my 2000 R/T used had 25,000 on it had it a week and took it back for waranty work on what I thought was all the transmissions fault. It would stutter shift from 1st to 2nd, and then there was the surging wich led me to believe there was a lean condition happening. Then cruising down the freeway on cruise control at speeds anywere between 65&75 MPH it would surge, with usually about a 500rpm increse in engine speed. I told the dealership all this and that I thought maybe the cruise control bit might be the converterlockup locking and unlocking. One of the service writers got down right nasty with me about the lean condition surge at part throttle. He said that it was no way that the transmission could be causing that! They don't even let you finish telling them what it's doing or describing it before they start tearing you're problems apart and making them all you're imagination! I got another service writer to work with me he was only mildly condesending! Then when I picked it up they told me they'd flashed the computer and reprogramed the shift points and adjusted the bands in the tranny. And that was the only things they could find wrong. Oh yeah when you put the gear selector in the drive position you have to wiggle it to make sure it falls into the detent! Otherwise you're driving along and it slips into another position! They said they adjusted that too! Not! Still does and started doing everthing else to again soon after! I've always worked on my own vehicles and firmly distrust dealerships with them! My motto is if I fix it and get it wrong the only person I can blaim is myself! Well Dodge too from time to time! But it is rediculous to buy a vehicle for almos 20K and have waranty on it that you can never get them to satisfy the conditions of! I went to the Department of Transportations web site and it blows my mind the number of other people that have the same problems or worse! Go check it out and complain! Enough people lodge the same complaints and Dodge will be forced to get a handle on some of these situations. Its www.nhtsa.dot.gov/

The thing about it that makes me ill... is that there isn't going to be a perfect truck, car, vehicle! you will always have problems of some sort, yeah there will be that one out of i dont know how many that wont give any problems, but the chances of that happening is pretty slim to none. Message: Kota Girl don't get me wrong I like my Dakota, I just don't like all the little constant string of problems that pop up. I've owned several Fords and never had this many problems all on the same vehicle. Vehicles nowadays are very complicated machines the more options you add to it the more likely you are to have a problem with one of them. But Dodge has so many that it is beyond the norm. And the "everyone has problems excuse doesn't cut it". When you go to the dealerships and tell them of these problems you can see the looks on there faces , they've seen this over and over again. The service writer
s have seen the same problems but they don't like to admit it . Get one of the mechanics alone off on the side and he'll tell you a different story. Go to the DOT's web site and look up you're vehicle or any dodge dakota between the years of 96 & 02. Especially on the transmissions and you'll see the number of people who all have the same things wrong with there transmissions. Yet no recall. It would be one thing if all the owners were negligent in there use of the tranny's or it's maintenance but mine started doing this as soon as I bought it used at 25k. Not to mention the throttle position sensor that is bad the idler pulley that squeals, the gasoline smell that comes into the cab all of a sudden when you're driving down the road, the rear end howling now at 33K, the popping noise when you make a right hand turn off of the freeway, and the rearend is limited slip not a locker! I work on my own vehicles once the get out of warranty so I'm willing to fix and improve components behind most of these complaints I have. But what about the average person just wanting to be able to drive there truck day in and day out? The real problem is that they've gotten the public into the mode now where there so used to vehicles always having problems as you say that that's acceptable! This is why those Japenese automakers made such a dent in american automakers sales. Think of it this way if it was a airplane would you put up with these problems and just hope you don't have to try and pull over on a cloud when it goes out on you? Luckily you can just pull you're truck over on the side of the road and call for help. But what if you're out in the hills? Let alone pulling over on the freeway with cars flying past at 70+ how many people get killed that way every year? Kota Girl you've only got 28k on your's and you're already having to take it in for upper ball joints! Thats just wrong!

Message: I own a 2000 Dakota Sport Quadcab 4x4 4.7, that I ordered up new at the time. This is my first Dodge purchase and possibly last. What I am not happy about is the so-called manufactures warranty. What a joke. It is ridiculous to buy a vehicle and you can't even get the dealership to honor the warranty. Sure I have had a few problems, fortunately nothing major. First the black paint on the bumpers started peeling and pitting, only 3 months after I bought it. Dealer refused to fix and repaint. They stated that they had no way of telling if it was the original factory bumpers. Give me a break! I tried other Dodge dealers locally and received the same response. I guess Daimler Chrysler provides a course to the dealerships on bullsh'ting their way out of repairs that should be covered under the warranty. Then later around 30,000 miles, I started getting a vibration from the rear at speeds greater than 45 mph. I took it into the dealer again; they wouldn’t even look at it unless I paid their labor rate for an employee to diagnose it. What a scam…isn’t labor and parts included in the warranty? Now, conveniently at 38,000 miles, (of course manufactures warranty expired, not like they would fix these problems anyway) I have several problems. My passenger side back door power window motor intermittently works. The other back doors power door lock relay sticks, causing the door to not always open or be closed. Plus to top it off, I have a problem with my gas gauge giving me a false reading. The gauges needle stays in the red until I get to a quarter tank or less. The instrument panels low gas icon stays lit and starts dinging to warn of low fuel. The overhead panel displays O miles for DTE. Well I guess I will have to resolve this one myself too. I can just imagine the dealer’s excuse on this one; how do we know you are not substituting gasoline for cheaper alternate fuels like ethanol. I have 2 Chevy’s and a Ford all purchased new and have never experienced such poor, fraudulent customer service as I have from Dodge dealerships. Anyway, if anyone else has experienced a similar problem with their gas gauge, some insight would much appreciated.

Message: Yes, Dodge is really making a wreck of thier reputation, although ever since i was a little kid, i always heard they suck. Lord knows why i bought one. WHAT IS SO HARD ABOUT MAKING A BALL JOINT THAT WORKS??!!! I've had a few other cars that had sealed for life ball joints and they never made a noise and never went bad. Then there's the tranmission woes. And for all you people that say to us "its how you take care of your truck", kiss my a--!! These peices of garbage usually have these problems almost the day you drive it off the lot. I baby my truck and drive it like an old man and it still sucks. I tell my friends of the various BS that occurs with my truck and they look at me like i'm crazy and with pity(they all own chevys). Then there's the so called warranty. What good is a warranty that is almost never honered??? They'll never admit something is wrong in the fisrt place!! "Your truck making sounds like the wheel is going to fall off is normal"....lol... I laughed real hard the day Chrysler started offering that 7 year 70,000 mile powetrain BS. They'll try dicking you evertime you bring it in with a problem. Not all of us have the time and/or money to go through all that arbitration crap and/or get a lawyer, which is what you need to get them to fix alot of the problems. Then when you fianlly get fed up and want to just get rid of it for something other than a dodge, you discover its awfull trade in value. Dodges don't hold their value worth a dam. (deep breath) Ok, heres my list of problems:
1999 Ext Cab 4x2 3.9 V-6 Auto 64,000 miles:
Obnoxious spark knock(was fixed after over a year of haggling but it still does it a bit. Who knows what kind of damage was done while it was pinging)
Crap Ball joints(a few were replaced pretty early on, now they're bad again)
Cab mounts(i sometimes thougt the cab and i were going to slide right off the frame)
Drivers seat-replaced twice due to foam puking out of the underside
unstable idle, tendency to stall when changes in engine load occur ie; putting it into or out of park, etc( never fixed, another "normal" condition)
Rear sliding window removed and resealed due to water leak
Transmission shot at 38000 miles....gee, 2000 miles after the warranty was up, imagine that. 1100 bucks to fix.
Tape deck busted at like 8000 miles
Bad leak detection pump 8000 miles
antifreeze leak at thermostat housing 15,000 miles
drivers seat belt mechanism replaced around 15,000 due to sticking.
Di--head service reps and rude service managers
(i almost went over the counter at one guy)
Various other loud rattles and sqeaks they could not or would not say was there. Many of the problems above were/are on-going things that were never really resolved. Now i'm just waiting to get a better job so i can afford the loss in trade in value and trade the truck in for a chevy.
I think the only thing that is good on these trucks is that the engines themselves last forver, although they never run right. But then there is the rest of the truck. I think its great there are people on here that have almost no problems and/or are satisfied with thier truck but i honestly think you're in the minority.

Anyhoo, the good news is I've got an original 1968 Dodge Charger R/T which need some TLC and she's been a real good runner since new. There's never been any Jap scrap, Corvette, Camaro or Mustang that's been able to catch me at the lights! Not that I've got anything aginst Corvettes; I rebuilt the engine in my friends 1970 454 CI but honestly it doesn't hold a candle to the R/T. NOW if they put the new HEMI in the Dakota R/T, for sure I'll buy one!!
