Message: I also own a 98 black Dodge Dakota. My paint problems started when the truck had just under 36K. I've had the top of the cab, the hood, the right front quarter panel, and the passenger door all repainted from 2000-2002. My original problem at 36K Dodge took care of. But since then they havn't done a whole lot. It took a phone call to the actual Dodge Consumer Representative and they ended up doing a 60/40 split (they paid for 60%) to cover the other parts of the truck that I mentioned earlier. Unfortunately, I lost the battle when I emphasized that the whole truck should be repainted because it is showing a history of bad paint. Dodge would only honor the parts that were peeling at the time. I am now at 65K and I now have 2 other areas peeling.

Message: I really don't think we are all trying to get a free paint job like several of our fine constituents have said. The bottom line is, one would not only think but expect a vehicle's paint job to last more than a couple of years before one notices it start to fade, crack, chip, peel, or whatever. The manufactor should take the responsibility to correct the problem. Next to our house, our cars are our biggest financial investments.

Message: I own a 99 dakota, solar yellow, 06 models are out, <7 years old> just starting to delaminate on rear centre of roof (clear coming off). Just for the record after reading piles of uninformed and ridiculous posts, I have a few comments. The paint companys supply, monitor application, and test paint jobs from factory NOT DCX, GM, or FORD, or JAP SCRAP. You CANNOT sand and polish whitening, or peeling clear. IF you are going to tell a body shop to just clear your truck, that is exactly what a paint job is. Colour is just colour, the clear has all, UV, Chemical resistance, and gloss properties. Colour is often only applied on repaired areas. Paint is only paint, not a bullet proof coating. Think of anything else that is painted and outside. What does it look like after 5 years outside? Any one who thinks ANY company should repaint ANY vehicle after 5 or 10?! years is beyond dreaming. Under 5 years regardless of OE warranty would probably looked after or 50/50 if gone about in a diplomatic way. I deal with this on a regular basis, so do people at all other companies, some more some less.

Message: And that folks is why I wax my truck almost once a week, to prevent that devil sphere in the sky from which brings us life from ever even touching my clear coat. LOL!!! Well that and the fact that I remember growing up and seeing the Dodge Spirits I think it was with all their paint ripped off and huge rust spots in their roofs and hoods. I think Dodge has always had a crappy reputation for paint. My solution... And it's definitley not an educated one. LOL.. Is just to keep waxing the hell out of it! LOL!!!

Message: i own a black 98 dakota and mine has the same problem. my friend also owned a 97 black dakota and had the same problem. i love the dodge name but the black paint obviously is hard on the clear coat. my paint was fine but my clear oxidized. the thing that sucks is a week after i bought the truck i noticed it on my roof, then slowly months later it went to my hood and both quarter panels. luckly in the hurricanes last year i got hit by 2 branches, one on my roof and one on the passenger side bed. insurance paid for alot of it to get painted and sence the people who did it took 16 days to do it they did the hood, and quarter panels free.

Message: I've heard of alot of things about paint, but the best explaination i've heard (from a pro painter) is bad primer. in the late 80's and early 90's (especially) the chrysler line seems to have had paint chipping/peeling etc.. leading to rust. my 90 dakota had the hood and roof peel and rust. i sanded them and painted them again, in the summer after i do a bit of other body work i am gonna sand down to the metal and primer/paint the whole truck over again.

Message: The paint problems at Dodge continue. I have a 2002 Red Dakota I purchased new. After 4.5 years, while applying a new coat of wax, I found a spot of cracked paint about the size of a golf ball on the roof. Since then, it has spread like some kind of nasty infection. The paint on the entire roof is shot and it is spreading to the doors and front fenders. Dodge refuses to take responsibility or provide any explanation for the defective paint and will not contribute to any repairs. They just keep offering to trade me into a new Dakota.
Maybe I am crazy, but it seems a reasonable expectation that the factory paint should last much longer than 4.5 years.

Message: I just wanted to add my voice to the chorus. My black '98 started with a little spot on the back of the roof about three years in. The spot spread like chicken pox all over the roof and quarter panels. About three years ago, a stranger in a parking lot started looking around my back wheels and said, "I had a Dodge like this. It started rusting right...here!" He pointed to a spot right above the rear wheels, and sure enough, there was a tiny bubble. Well, that guy's touch must have been magic, because not even a year later, both back panels rusted completely through. With all due respect to the painting pros, I've owned a lot of cars in my time (new and very, very used), and I've never had such lousy paint (or "clear coat," or whatever) quality. It's inexcusable, especially when the overpriced product does nothing but depreciate from the second you set eyes on it (and that's not just Dodge).

Message: "Your request for a re-paint has been declined" is what I just received from the Chrysler dealer regarding my 2002 Dodge Ram 1500. I noticed the paint was fading a couple of years ago, but as time went by those areas progressively got worst. As stated by others, it's almost like an infection. To add fuel to the fire, the assitance service manager who told me that I'm out of luck asked if I wanted the number to a great paint shop that was down the street. I think that he regreted asking me that.

Message: My 98 Dakota had white undercoat showing through the black paint. The dealership agreed that it was a factory defect and had most of the truck repainted under warranty in 2001. The clearcoat started to crack after less than 2 years and the paint shop only warranties for a year and would not even offer a discount to repaint. I've noticed a LOT of Dakotas on the road with the same problem. No wonder so many go to the foreign vehicles.

I had a red '98 Dodge Dakota that I bought in late 1997. I added an aftermarket fiberglass tonneau cover of the same color a could weeks after buying the truck. I lived in PA for its first 5 years and then the intense Florida sun for its remaining 7. When it turned 6 or so the tonneau cover started bubbling but the paint on the truck was fine. Then this last year the paint started to go on the roof and soon the problem started to appear all over the truck.
I don't know how long paint is supposed to last, but I knew that Fords from the early '90s had a problem. I think 12 years is probably a good lifespan. Chances are if older paint held up better there's probably some environmentalist group that bullied the auto makers into using an inferior paint - thereby causing such "eco friendly" things as encouraging people to construct new cars to replace those with bad paint or repainting their old car over and over again.
And it doesn't spread: it's simply that the paint had a threshold on how much abuse it can take and once that limit is exceeded the paint starts to go.

Message: I traded in my 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan just under 3 MONTHS ago for a 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan and just a week ago I noticed the paint is already peeling on one of the sliding doors. Also a piece of plastic fell off (but fixed myself) I have an appointment tomorrow at the Dodge dealership for them to have a look at the peeling paint, they will have to decide if its covered. I only have 53K on my van. In my opinion the 2009 Caravans are a piece of SH** and regret trading in my old van. Has anyone else had any paint problems on a new Dodge and was it covered?

Message: I've had a problem with the paint on my 97 2500. I only have 124K on mileage, but the paint looks like it is 20 years old. Pealing clear coat, white areas and down to the primer in several spots. It might make a good camo truck, bu it is definately not what I would expect for this year vehicle. I also have a 1988 Jeep Cherokee and a 1997 Volvo 960 with "NO PAINT PROBLEMS". I have been told by a paint pro that moisture in the paint ( even in micron size, can cause this probelm). Repainting in California is cost prohibitive. We now have to use the water based paint which is $345.00 a gallon. Lets see, 1 gal for primer, 2 for each color (black & silver) and 2 for clear. Thats $1,725.00 just for paint. Then we have to figure in the body work, sanding, blocking and taping at $75.00 an hour. I was quoted $3700.00 not including replacing the side rub rails or the final color and and polish. Seems like Dodge should look at the paint formulations from the 88 years and make adjustments. To continue to have a paint problem should be a priority with a manufacturer. If the other guys can do it right, why can't Dodge ???
