Has anyone had experience with peeling? My Dakota is white and for the last year it has been peeling from the hood and roof and now has started on the doors around the windows. The truck is a 95 and has always been in So.Cal.

that is paint problem chrysler used to have, they should repaint it for free, its a factory defect or in other words a recall in my opinion. before i bougt my 00 dakota 4.7 i owned an 89 spirit ES that did the same thing, unfortunately i hit bambi on a country road and teepeed the hood and radiator support, pulled the parts at a u pullit and found a spirit hood already painted white, welded and bolted everything up myself and looked as good as a body shop only $900 versus an outrageous body shop price. but that was just a little story of mine, and i would go to the dealer on that paint issue.
colin

if that idea about having the dealer sounds dumb since the truck is a 95, im just annal about my vehicles, very particular.

my 1997 dodge 4x4 is white and i have little yellow spots all over it that look like the start of rust when i bought the truck used with 17 thousand miles i paid 1200.00 dollars for an extended warranty bumper to bumper for 1 hundred thousands miles and also had a clear coat put on the paint which cost me another 500.00 dollars and i took my truck back last year and the dealer said the bumpers which are all rusted and pealing off was salt of the roads. ha ha! and said the the yellow spots were all over my truck was coming out from under the paint but thery said that they called and there is nothing that they could do about the paint. they also said it would cost me about 400.00 dollars to get the clear coat buffed off and then another 1000.00 dollars to get it painted again. well i'm gonna go back again this year and see what they say this time because i really don;t like just giving them 1700.00 dollars for nothing. thank-you and would appreciate hearing anything about yellow spots on your truck if you have any which i hope you don't because it looks really bad.

I've got a '97 dakota with the same peeling problem on the front bumper. I brought it back under warranty and the dealer couldn't get it fixed by the time I needed to pick it up. I brought it back again after the warranty was up and although they have it documented coming back while it was under warranty, they still won't fix it. Next truck will be a Chevy or Ford.

Why not just try a different dodge dealer? Chevy dealers from what i have seen on the web are even worse. But do what you must.

Press the issue on the bumper,my dad and I could not get our local dealer to fix it,but when we went to another dealer they repainted the bumper for nothing. Shop around, and remember the dealear who helped you,and tell the others that you wont forget that they did'nt help you, when its time to get another truck.

i have a 99 black dak and the clearcoat started coming off and the base coat too and i took it to one delar and they wouldnt do anything about it so i took ot to a diffrent dealer and they said that it needed repainted because they didnt put enough clear on from factory. but they cant do anything till i call crysler, so i call and tell them the story and they call the first dealer after i hang up with them and start rasing hell about it so i get a call from them telling me to bring it back. well i do and they measuer the thickness of the paint and conclude the same as the other dealer told me. any ways i bltched and got to have the second dealer repaint it and got the first dealer another assripping. persistance pays off if at first nothing happens get on the horn with chrysler and just annoy the shlt out of them and the dealer and eventually they will cave.

just my 2 cents

I have a white 99 dakota, I also have the little spots on my truck, they kind of wash off but then reappear, I took it to Dodge and I was told it was little metal shavings, mainly from brake pads and other microscopic road debris, the service manager was very helpful and brought out the special clay that is used for removing these types of foreign objects from the paint, he said that every car gets them its just that they show up more so on white, anyway if this is what your truck is experiencing, I would definately try the clay, it works well and it only costs about 25 to 30 bucks from a paint store. good luck

Well my truck just came from the dealership last nigh. It has those little rust spots all over it. They said it was like what matt was explaining.(fall out) They took that spray and clay to it. Still rust spots all over it. I am not a very happy camper. I have owned 2 other white vehicles. NEVER saw the rust spots. I have only seen this once before. It was a 88 chev truck. Come to find out it was a defect from the factory. Chevy repainted it after the first visit. Not a prob since. I have no Idea what to do with the rust spots all over the truck. I do not think it is normal at all. Due to my expirence with white vehicles I do not think it shows up more on white vehicles. I just don't know. Sorry for the rant. Just not very happy.

If you live near a railroad, then rail dust is probably your problem. Trains create a large amount of "Rail Dust". This is very small pieces of the rail and trains wheels that comes of as the train moves. these pieces become embedded in your cars clearcoat and since they are small unprotected pieces of metal, they rust. This is a very big problem especailly on brand new cars since they are moved largely by train. If you have ever noticed new cars with the white plastic on the tops, this is why. the best way to remove this dust is with a claybar, and keeping a good coat of wax will help prevent damage to the paint

I would accept that except that I lived in the same place for 13 years. I had 2 white vehicles in that time. Not little rust spots. I had a 88 chevy truck 4x4. It had rust spost similar to what I have. Chevy repainted. I did not see the spots again on the chevy. I lived in the same state with a 72 chevy never saw the spots. My dad owned it before I did. I replaced my 88 chevy with a 94 dodge ram no rust spots on it to the day. This DAK is the only vehicle with the rust spots currently on it. Still have the white altima. No rust spots. It is 4 years older than this 2000 DAK. Yes I do have train tracks about 3.5 miles away from my house. I crossed them once a week. Last week I went to Hinkley dodge here in Salt Lake Utah. They took the solution and clay bar to it. Still have the rust spots. Personally I think it is a paint flaw. But I really know nothing about paint. But what I do know is this is not normal for my area.

i have a white 96 dakota and like your truck mine is peeling around the doors and starting up to the roof. it doesnt look bad yet, but i have seen alot of GenII Dak's (NOT ONLY WHITE) here in No.cal with huge spots where the paint has peeled. good news is that it sounds like there is a chance the dealer might take care of it.

Well... I am going through this exact same mess.

There are several places on my 99 Dak that have "delaminated" and need repair. The Dealer has already written off my hood citing "environmental damage" a.k.a. "Bird Doo-Doo" however I have similar damage to the cab roof and on my tailgate.

So now we are in a pissin' match over it... my 36,000 mile warranty has expired (about a month ago now I am about 1,500 miles over) however this condition existed before that... therefore I have had to get Corporate involved.

I just hate it when the dealers just wanna "screw" with you.

Well... I finally got a resolution.

After goin' around and around on this, the dealer finally caved and paid for my hood, roof, and tailgate to get repainted... however I had to pay for the "bodywork" of fixing dents and dings.

The total bill came out to $1,400 of which I paid $350. I guess that is alright huh?

well I'm back again I went to the Dodge Dealer today for the 2 time and he said he heard it was railroad dust but he had already had 3 or 4 WHITE trucks like this and they can compound them using clay for about 150.00? No guarantee that it wouldn't come back through. One truck that they did the spots came back through! not as much but they did come back. I don't care I think that this should be a recall of some sort.
I should make me a big sign and say DON"T BUY A WHITE DODGE TRUCK untill you have checked out MINE!

Ya Dianne,

The dealer did it for me. Took the solution and clay bar to it. As I walked up to it the truck looked great. All shiny and tires tires greased up. Looked real sharp. I looked at it. The rust spots(fallout they say) was still there. I said they are still there. The service rep then said well we did all we can. Currently talking to service rep. manager now going to dis. manager. I have DC involed. Going nowhere fast. But I think if the noisy wheel still makes noise it will get fixed. Still not very happy about this situation. Don't worry I am used to doing this. Had to do the same thing when my trany went out and the t-case cracked.

We have good lemon laws here, so hopefully I will get something resolved soon. I bought the truck new, and now it has rust all over it... Probably happened during transportation to the dealership.....

This problem sounds familiar to me but my paint is not flaking. I have 98 dak CC with 58K miles on it and I am thinking that the dealer will not do anything about it. I think what my paint is doing is called blooming but I am not sure. It is supposely from an incorrect mixture of the paint or the clear when it was sprayed and the paint looks horrible. It has these white patches on the hood, fenders, roof, doors, bed rails and tail gate. My truck is black so it stands out pretty good on it. It has been progressivly getting worst so it did not happen all at once and I am afraid that the dealer will say this and wonder why I have not brought my truck in when I first noticed it. But I was thinking that if I had done this they might have tried to paint only the problems areas which was the hood and then I would have to go back because the rest of the truck looks like crap. Should I just call them or go to a dealership and argue with them about it and see what they say because I do not have extra money to spend on getting it painted b/c a buddy of mine who paints says that it has to be taken all the way down past the base coat to correctly fix the problem.

We have a gray 89 Chevy Celebrity that was losing its color on the trunk and a couple of other places. It looked like it was fading really bad. We had a minor incident in 1994 and when we took it in to get it repaired, my husband asked the dealer to touch up the paint. The dealer got us a new paint job because it was under a factory recall and we haven't had a problem since. I think Dodge should be ashamed of this problem. I told a friend about this because he has a 1993 Blue Dodge Dakota that is almost totally white on the roof and rusted like crazy. But now I don't have a lot of hope that he'll get it fixed.
