Message: My ABS and Brake light stayed on for about a year before I got it fixed at the dealer. It was a burnt out sensor somewhere or something like that. It was about $100 to $130, I don't remember. It might be less b/c I had them do some other things at the same time but I think that is what the reciept said for that job.

Message: I am having the same problem on my 94 Dakota (ABS and Brake light on). My truck only has the Rear Wheel Antilock system. The problem began with a ticking sound that was only audible during braking and it was always faster when I first started braking and was gone by the time I stopped. After a couple of days, the ticking sound stopped altogether and the ABS and Brake lights both came on. I haven't noticed any difference in brake pedal feel or in braking performance. I am pretty sure that the ticking sound was the Antilock solenoids opening and closing. Whenever I disconnect the battery to clear the codes, the ticking noise comes back again for a couple of days. The Chiltons manual that I have for my truck gives a list of ABS codes and says to ground out the ABS connector to acces the codes, but it doesn't say where the connector is.
Does anyone know where the ABS test connector is for this model year?
I will be pulling a trailer from Texas to California and back in a couple of days and would like to have the brake system in perfect order.
Thanks in advance!

Message: Oops! I did a search and pulled up an archived posting that covered my problem. It looks like the problem on the earlier Dakotas is the same as the later Dakotas (bad speed sensor on the differential). You would think that after five years that Dodge could come up with a sensor that works!

Message: My '95 V6 had the same symptom (ABS and BRAKE light ON) after getting it back from the repair of a splice that had corroded open. I reset the PCM (disconnected the NEG terminal of the battery, put ignition to START [is this part really necessary - reason I ask is doing this assumes there is now a circuit to clear the memory, does this somehow get a ground from somewhere else ???] for 30 seconds, then let go of the START and put the NEG back on the battery.
Any way, it works fine now, no cost !!!

Symptoms: ABS and Brake lights on. Speedo not working until I hit 30 mph.
Fix: Replace ABS sensor at differential.
Hey, fellow Dakota owners!
Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!
The input I've found on this site has been a ton of help (especially that from Rascal!).
OK, I was driving back from Corpus Christi yesterday (I live in San Antonio) when my ABS light and brake light came on. I didn't know what to make of it -- and my 4 year old daughter was riding in the truck with me. I was more than a little freaked out -- didn't know if my brakes were about to fail or not. I checked out the entire system physically and everything was fine.
I came home and started searching for information on this issue that was specific to '98 2x4 Dakotas. I found this site and it worked out great. I called the local Dodge dealer and got a new sensor ($32.85 including tax) that included a jumper cable to turn the sensor 90 degrees on the rear diff. The Mopar part included excellent directions on installation.
This installation took me about an hour -- mostly due to the old sensor being stuck in the differential hole. I needed a socket wrench and a box wrench to do the job -- and a standard screwdriver to pry the old sensor out.
Total cost: $37 (parts, Copenhagen and a couple of Cokes).
Total time: A little over an hour.

Message: the reason the speedo doesnt work is i believe the speed signal for the abs and the speedometer come of the same senser/generater at the differencial. other makes use a speed senser where the speedo cable used to be in the extension housing of the trany.and seperate speed sensers at each wheel. the abs module compairs the signal from all of these sensers at the same time... and if one drops out or changes more than another in even a light stop... it thinks a wheel is locking up and goies into an "ABS" stop.thats why you guys are getting the lights and noise of an abs activation at slow speeds. a wheel speed senser is dropping out. Hope this helps...Bill

Message: Thanks to all. I just purchased a 1999 Dodge Dakota Sport and the ABS and Break light was on. The speed od wouldnt start working till 25 mph. After reading some of the messages I went and purchased the rear abs sensor from dodge and installed it in about 15 min. It cost 31.28 and solved all the problems. I used a 1/2 socket, 9/16 wrench, and one screw driver (flat head). Its done and back on the road. Thinking of moving on to the O2 sensor, I have the 2.5L engine-does anyone know the replacement miles on these? Thanks again, I saved at least $120.00 doing it myself. Robert

Message: My speedometer works fine. My ABS & Brake light comes on once I hit about 40mph. I replaced the rear sensor above the differential and reset the computer but the light still comes on when I hit about 40mph. Someone mentioned it might be the tranny sensor but I'm not going to keep replacing random parts hoping it'll fix the problem. I'll take it the dealer next week after I get paid and I'll post back the results.

Message: Well, as I told everyone I took my truck to the dealership and they found the problem. My problem was my brake light and ABS light would come on between 40 - 50 miles per hour and would stay on until I turned the truck off.
It is a brake light sensor that is bad. Basically, the truck thought that my foot was costantly on the brake. This requires replacing the sensor and the dealer resetting the computer to get rid of the code.
There was also code from the transmission for my tires. I had the 31 inch tires stock and I put 32x11.5x15 tires on. So they cleared that code and re-adjusted things the transmission to match my tires.
Not bad for $140.00.

Message: Thanks to everyone for all your help. My abs light and brake light wouldn't turn off and my speed odometer wouldn't work until about 30mph. Worried about being ripped off by the dealer I went searcing on the web and found this site. $38.05 for an ABS sensor, a socket, a wrench and some dielectric grease and 10 minutes later everything was working fine.
The guy at the parts counter told me they sell tons of ABS sensors. You would think that dodge would of been able to make a reliable one by now.

Message: I just started having the same problem on Friday 04-18-03 with my 99 Dakota R/T. The ABS Light stays on and my Odemeter won't work at all. I am a litle confused as to the interchangeable names on the sensor's. Do I need a rear speed sensor, rear ABS sensor a differential sensor or are they all one in the same? Thanks to all for your postings they have saved me a bunch of time and money. (I won't get taken at the Dealership now)
They wanted $75-$80.00 an hour to run diagnostics on the truck.
Thanks,
Erik

Message: Problem:
The ABS and BRAKE warning lights came on, speedometer dropped to zero somewhere around 30 mph. Check engine light came on once, briefly, then extinguished itself.
Solution:
Read this forum. Was also most encouraaged by: Snap On Modis Systems case study at http://buy.snapon.com/products/diagnostics/modis-system-screens.asp
I replaced both the vehicle speed sensor at the transmission (about $25.00-that did not fix it) and the Rear Anti-lock Brake Sensor (about $35.00-and that did fix the problem). Total labor is about five minutes on the VSS and about 10-15 min. On the RABS sensor. The lights extinguished themselves normally the next time I turned on the ignition. No scanner required, no fancy procedures to turn out the lights. The only tools for the RABS (located on top of the differential) were a flat-blade screwdriver two half-inch wrenches. Moderate mechanical skills required. Toughest part is separating the two-wire connector on the RABS. Since this device connects to sensitive electronics equipment, it might be wise counsel to disconnect the battery while operating on it.
This was on a 1999 Dodge Ram Van. Parts apparently available only at Mopar.
