This is a message to all. I'm shocked to find so many people with the similar problems I have. I bought my 98 dakota with only 48000 on it in 2002. It was in very good shape. It now has about 135000 on it. Luckily the only problems I had were a leaky Pow_Steering pressure hose. And the most elusive problem being the brake and abs light staying on with the speedo not functioning until about 30mph. The fascinating thing is most people don't analyze the problems like I do. First I suggest everyone get a Haynes manual if they don't have one. For serious people it 's a good idea to get a Chilton manual as well. I have yet to fix the speedo and the brake, but I soon will. What I have done is bled the brakes and all parts in between there was air inr the Rear Wheel Anti Lock valve. That didn't solve it. I tried reseating connectors, cutting power for a while tracing wires, examining the instrument panel electronics(not for everyone). I do think the Manufacturer should warranty all computerized parts emission or not. Because my problem started on a hot day. You know what happened next, but later that evening after cutting power all was well. Later next morning after a drive in the mountains it all came back. Which resulted in frequent stalling. So I had to use all 3 pedals when stopping which can be dangerous. Of course the logic is the speedo uses the same sensor as the abs unit(design flaw) So we get two problems from one cause. I personally will never depend on a drive by wire system of any kind for the above reasons. I can still depend on my 82 4cyl camaro I've only replaced 3 sensors in the 13 years of ownership. I'll let you know how it goes. thx, kurt

Why is it that some people's speedos dont work at all and some work when over 20 or 30 mph? My brake and ABS light are on and I have no speedo. Going to get the rear speed sensor tommorow, hopefully it fixes my problem on my 99 2500 Ram.

99 sport Ext cab, 4x4, 5.2, AT, air

My problem may be the same as some, but I am unsure. My brake light and abs light come on just after starting the truck. They just never go out after starting it actually. They have never come on while driving or moving. I took it to a garage one day with the light on, and no codes with the snap on scanner. He said that it may be a valve sticking in the brake pump cylinders and we changed the fluid (needed done anyways 74K miles on the truck). He checked the rear wheel sensor and said that it was ok. I only have rear wheel ABS. The light is still on sometimes when I start the truck every couple of days. My speedo works fine, my trans shifts fine. I have no check engine light on. Any help would be appreciated. I am planning on selling it to a friend, and want to know if it is expensive to fix. I am telling him up front about the problem.

Try replacing that brake switch under the dash on the brake pedal. I'm going to be
replacing that this week - already replaced the sensors in the tranny & rear end.
The local $tealership quoted me $82 for it.

Well Kurt you sound like a real wizard and nice of you to assume that "..most people don't analyze the problems like I do". Yeah, I bet that you got it all figured out with your crap Haynes and "serious" Chiltons book. Both of those are junk. Factory shop manual is the only way to go, even for those not so "serious".
Have you figured out the problem after 2 months or are you still analyzing?

I had a similar problem with My ABS....

Found it was because I fried the rear differential and the ABS ring that was inside....

Also, was told that the Exhaust leak I had was a major cause of it. The improper backpressure was causing the computer to do alot of funky stuff..that, and the fact the heat from the exhaust was fowling up the boosting level inside the canister.

So, two things, check to see if your headers (or manifold if you're still stock) is leaking....fix that and see if it solves it....second, pull off your rear diff and see if everything looks okay in there.

Most likely, your prob is with one of those two things.

Well, I read every posting on the subject, very helpful but, is it the
brake light switch or the abs sensor on the differential. It is also
winter and I have done a few donuts. Someone wrote that Dodges
don't like doing them.
I have a 2002 SXT with rear abs. The lights come on shortly after I
start driving. The speedo still works fine, so it could be the brake
light switch, or should I just disconnect the battery for a while and
not do any more donuts.( no fun )
What do you think?

Does the problem come together with a loss of pressure on the brake pedal for you?

The lights on my Dakota Sport 97 appears yesterday, still don't have the speedometer problem, but the pedal feels loose on braking. I'll check all the brake system today, and if the problem isn't solve, I'll also look for a new sensor (thanks for that comments).

Just to be sure, will appreciate if you can told me if the issue come to you with this lost of sensibility on the pedal.

Thanks

I did not notice a loss of pressure. I took it to my mechanic and he
read the codes. He says it came up as the brake light switch. He
changed the switch the next day and the lights have been off since.
There was a broken wire in the harness, which he repaired. What I
notice now is the brake lights don't come on right away. I could
come almost to a stop before they come on. I haven't had a chance
to crawl under there yet so I don't know if the switch is loose. I
don't think there is an adjustment on it. when I find out I will let
you know.

ABS and Brake light on
IP: Logged

I've had the problem with my ABS and Brake lights being on pretty much since I got my 2001 dakota new. I took it to the dealership I bought it from 3 times and they could never find a code because the lights were intermitent. They charged me $330 for front pads and rotors because they had to be new before they could even diagnose the problem. This was at about 24,000 and 30,000 miles. New pads and rotors after only 6000 miles!!!! I took it there one more time and they couldn't pull a code.

I took it to another dealership in the area because they were supposed to be good. There were no stored codes. Lights were intermitent so they couldn't get a code to come up and it didn't do it when I was there. The lights were on all the way to the dealership, but when I got there and turned it off, the lights didn't come on as they restarted. They again charged me for new front pads and rotors, another $300+ before they could do anything. Then they couldn't find an issue.

I drove out again when the lights were on and demanded they have someone pull a code before I shut the truck off. They said the ABS module was bad and replaced it. It was under warranty but otherwise would have been almost $700. Two days later the lights were on again. I took it out there and they said they couldn't find a code again even though the lights were on.

So I took it to a third dealership. The same thing, they wanted to charge me for pads and rotors. They couldn't find a code because it would always go off when I was there. They pulled a code on my third trip when it stayed on, but said it was a "ghost code" and that there was no information for it. They said they'd have to research it. The service manager said he'd get back to me the next day. I called every 2 days for the next 2 weeks and he said he still couldn't find any information on it.

So now I took it to a friend who I met a few years ago. He has 30+ years of credentials. He pulled a code #66 that says "Power Relay Short) and he said to replace it first for ABS. I can't find a part for a power relay anywhere. Is this going to be part of the speed sensor that everyone is talking about?

John

I have a 99 Dakota 4x4 V8 84500 miles, I'm having the same problem as some of you. I just had a whole new brake system put in $1300, when all of a sudden a week ago my ABS & Brake light came on also my speedo is not working. I took it into the garage and they told me I was going to need a new ABS board. They didn't bother checking the rear sensor. Should I replace this first?? Also I'm getting the thud going from 3rd to 4th gear- and have been for a while now any suggestions before I get a new tranny? help- leslie

It is funny to see many people having the same troubles with their trucks or SUVs. I read all the entries for the past several years, and I am just about convinced of what I need to do, but let's check one more time.

1998 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L
-Check engine light comes on once in a while, no biggie to me
-The ABS and Brake light come on from time to time. I have not had brake failure as far as I could tell, but I don't have the stopping capability I should have, whenver the light is on.
-The speedometer currently works, and knock on the hood, it will remain working.
-When I hit the cruise button, the light comes on, however, when I set, nothing happens... only the green "cruise" light comes on the dash when I hit on and off.

So... what should I try replacing? Does Autozone do a good job locating codes? What info should I take the to the Dodge Dealer so I don't get the run around?

Here's another one! '99 Dakota, brake light & ABS light came on, followed shortly there after with Check Engine light. Speedometer would not work until above 40 mph. After finding this site with many, many other folks describing the same symptoms, I called the local Mopar store, got a rear speed sensor for $36 and change, replaced it in like 30 minutes. Its all good! All systems normal. Thanks folks for all the posts and saving us a bunch of cash and headaches!
