Depends if it's the one in the tranny or the rear diff. See my post before yours ( prior page ).

no i had this same problem along with a few other codes on my ABS but this is a very simple problem to fix, just buy a new speed sensor (cheap) and pop it in. i also had to buy a new ABS module, a new rear axle housing sensor, and pin test all my wires for the module to see which one was bad and fix it. i also had to get a new brake light switch ... it was madness

I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota Sport-4x4 pick up
The engine light keeps coming on and the abs/brake lights stays on & the speed odemeter works when reaching 30 mph. I have been told it's a sensor problem. What is the name of this sensor? I have taken it to 3 places & they are soooo dumb & know nothing.
Thanks for any help I can get.

Most likely the rear axle speed sensor is the failure. It is located on the rear differential housing.

My husband bought the rear axle speed sensor at our local Dodge dealer for around $52. He & a friend are putting it on the truck this week. I will be glad to see no more lights on and the speed odemeter working correctly.
Thanks for all your responses.

My husband has a 98 Dakota and the abs light is on and the spedometer doesn't read until we reach 20 mph. My husband is a soldier deployed to Afghanistan and I I don't know a thing about trucks. I recently had his waterpump replaced, and that cost a small fortune. Is there an inexpensive way to fix this problem if it's already been identified as a faulty sensor? The dealership wanted over $200 to fix it.

The speed sensor on the rear end is $33 at a resonable dealership,
& the one that goes into the tailend of the tranny was around $44.
Easy to do since the rear one is held in with 1 nut & the other
can be taken out with a cresent wrench.

If you 98 has that suspension pkg. like my 99, you'll have like
16"-18" of clearance, & won't even need jackstands to get underneath!
Life couldn't be easier.

It is most likely the Rear Wheel Speed Sensor. Alanna your dealership is ripping you off. I worked at one for over a year and we charged not more than $100 for parts and labor. If anything go to your dealer and tell them that you want the sensor replaced. Tell them that you do not want a diagnostic test run just replace the D@#$ sensor. That will take care of your problem. I have read all of the problems and fixes with the speedo, but I didn't see any like mine. I have a Dodge 1500 quad 4x4 and had changed the speed sensor, abs module, and disconnected the battery, but my speedo still doesn't register, nor does the cruise work and the check engine light is on. I scanned the code(P0500). Does it matter how long I need to leave the battery disconnected to get my speedo working again. "Suggestions Please". I don't like dealerships, I perfer to know what's been touched on my truck.

The battery needs to be dis-connected for 2-30 minutes,
depending on make/model. Best leave it unconnected
overnight.

What exactly is a P0500 code anyway for your truck?

BTW, Autozone scans your computer for free - at least
out here on Long Island. They clear codes too.

I have a similar problem except my speedometer works fine all the time and The brake light and ABS light come on when I go over 40 mph. I replaced the rear speed sensor and the lights still come on. They reset when I turn the ignition off, then they wont come back on until Im over 40 again. When I hook up the code reader I dont get any errors logged in the computer.

Any Suggestions??

We replaced the rear speed sensor & it took care of the light(brake & abs) problems coming on except the check engine light stayed on. It also fixed the speedometer too. My brakes recently went out of my truck & we had them fixed & ever since then the check engine light has been off. The capler (misspelled) was leaking & the rotors were replaced. I'm glad to see no more lights. They drove me almost crazy. They say having the lights on hurts your gas mileage too!
Good luck.

Eric,

My problem ended up being in the brake switch. You might want to try it, it was only $20 at the dealer and its easy to swap out.The brake switch says not to reinstall it, so if the switch was ever removed or bumped it can make it loose in the socket. I wired up my trailer brake controller a few years ago, and I think I may have bumped the switch or even removed it (cant remember) during the process. When I went to check my wiring after this problem, I barely touched the brake switch and it popped out of its bracket. I reinstalled the original switch and made sure it was tight. To my surprise the lights stayed off for about 2 days then came back on. I repeated the process of re secureing the switch and now the lights have been off for about 2 weeks. I have the new switch from the dealer and am going to install it when I get a chance as I know its just a matter of time before they come back on again. Try messing with the switch a little and then make sure its secure and see if the lights stay off for any amount of time. Either way the switch is the cheapest thing to replace as part of the troubleshooting process. Good luck!!
