Message: Dealer had our 96 4x4 Dakota for a week and gave up.
The brake light and ABS lights were on. I found this fourm and bought the speed sensor for the rear diff. for $15.00 and fixed the problem in under one hour!
Our speedometer was working but sometimes around 55 or 60 it would jump around.(still does this) This also fixed the cruise control that had been out for a couple of months.
Thanks to all who posted as the dealer quoted me around $1,000.00 to fix it IF they could!

Message: 1999 Ram 1500 2 wd(auto) Yep another! 3 days ago had NEW TIRES & Air SHOCKS installed. TODAY, the ABS & Brake lite comes on(Would you not know it, SAT. AFTERNOON at 3:30 Pm when all the Garages close at 3:00Pm or earlier!). Will check tomorrow if the Tail lights, Cruise & Speedo works at or below 30 or not. I did not notice about any other than the LIGHTS on the Dash, when we were driving it today, it(Speedo) worked at HIGHER SPEEDS.. WILL ALSO look at the Cruise Control as we did not use that today. We were just worried about getting home in one piece! Have an appointment for MONDAY(Tomorrow being SUNDAY...)at the DEALERSHIP. We have an EXTENDED-EXTENDED WARRANTY from DODGE. (Maximum Care Warranty for 18,000 more miles & 11 more months!)NOT LOOKING FORWARD to this visit as LAST YEAR, it took 5 visits(100+ miles round trip each trip) and many HOURS in the WAITING ROOM!)to get the last problem fixed(ERRATIC SPEED/Surging Idle also involving Cruise Control )- AND that was only fixed after I COPIED ANSWERS from the WEB Boards!!!AS there were HUNDREDS of DODGE RAM OWNERS with that PROBLEM! THROTTLE POSITION Sensor! IMAGINE when OWNERS have to go tell mechanics what is wrong! Anyway that was 1 yr ago exactly.. and here we are again! One thing you can count on at the DEALERSHIPS: LOTS of Salesmen trying to sell YOU A NEW ONE! Are there PEOPLE STILL wondering why they NEED BAILED OUT? I am just worrying that they will Take my Deductible, and when I drive out, it will start all over again! Last time they LIED(Said that it was the right CODE) replaced a Idle Control Motor and later found out that They LIED at the dealership as they did not want to deal with the PROBLEM!...DURING ALL 5 visits, they NEVER even Test DROVE the vehicle and 2 of the 5 visits they had the Vehicle for OVER a week! :(

| Eratic dashboard gauges IP: Logged
Message: 2003 Dakota 2WD 3.9L. At first the seat belt light would come on while driving and everyone had their seat belts on. Then very infrequently all the dashboard gauges would shut off (go to the left like you turned the key off) but then come back on immediately. Now the frequency of the gauge failure has increased and the needles bounce off and on as you are driving. Sometimes all the idiot lights come on too. The strange thing is that even if I'm driving and the gauges are eradict, as soon as I come to a stop everything works fine. When I start moving again the gauges become eradict again. Sounds to me like it has something to do with the speed sensor, but a local automotive electric shop says it's the ABS computer that is causing the problem. Any thoughts?

Message: Daddio, is there a way I can check the CTM or is it just a plug and play guess? I have a new symptom with my eradict gauges that I described previously. I found that when the low fuel level light comes on the gauges work fine, not eradict. I drove around all weekend shopping with my wife and the gauges never fluctuated. As soon as I put gas in they became eradict again. It is almost like this light added a ground that fixed the problem. Does that shed any light on a possible cause?

THey replace the ABS sensor in the rear and now when i hit 75 MPH the ABS & Brake come on. The lights have always and still reset when the ignition is turned off and you restart the car. The Speed'O has never stopped working surring either problems. The mechanic says there is a code for intermiten problems, but has yet been able to find the problem.

Message: Well here's your answer as I had the same symptons, replaced the same rear speed sensor, and had the same results. My sypmtoms started like yours and then progressed to all the gauges, including the speedo and tach, going off and on. Finally after it got too annoying I took it to the Dodge dealer and was told that it was the dash gauge cluster. It's not very common but they had seen it before. And true to form in this day and age of plug and play, you must replace the entire gauge cluster.......and only Dodge can do it because they are required by law to set the mileage on the digital speedometer. To the tune of $1000. $750 for the part, $250 to install. So I had it done, not fully believing them, but it did in fact fix it. I guess I can't complain as this is the only major repair I've had to do in 7 years and 120,000 miles. Oh well.

Message: I have read every message on here from the beginning. I have a '98 ram 1500 5.2L. I bought the truck 4 years ago. since i have owned it, my abs + brake lights come on over 70. today i replaced the brake light switch ($20 even at napa) and now it only comes on at 80+. My abs have not functioned since i have owned it. I refuse to get ripped off by the dealership. about 2 years ago my speedo went nuts and my buddy replaced the rear sensor and it fixed that problem, but it wasn't a mopar part. about 6 months ago my cruise stopped working, but the light is on. I have inspected all the vacuum lines which are all in good shape. so my question... should I attempt to replace the rear diff sensor again, or am i wasting my money with guesses? winter is coming and I would like my abs to work. Im open to recommendations after 4 years of mild troubleshooting, and i at least want my cruise back. any ideas? anyone????

Message: I did about a year ago when i was diagnosing it again, and it just came up as a common abs code. i cant remember the exact code. the dealer told me that it could be any of the sensors, and they would change them (at cost to me) and if that didnt fix it they would change the computer (also at a higher cost to me). maybe im wrong, but that sounds ridiculous for a professional dealer to do, and they werent the first to say that.

Message: Thanks for all the inputs here...it's a great forum. I have a 97 Dakota SLT, 2wd. It too had an ABS Light, which will cause an automatic Brake Light. For me, the light came on after the Firestone people replaced my 4 tires and my rear drum brakes. I replaced my front rotors and pads, but the ABS light was still there. I took the truck to Goodyear for the free brake inspection. They told me they couldn't read any fault codes and to take the truck to the dealership. Then I read this forum and a few people said to disconnect the battery negative terminal to clear the faults. It worked for me. I will keep an eye on it...if it returns I will replace the rear speed sensor.

Message: I too had the lights stay on after a repair. I replaced the starter and battery and then the lights stayed on. Below is all the best info I could find after surfing the net.
RESETTING LIGHTS on dash instrument panel
If staying on… ABS light, & brake light, and possibly engine light.
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
2. Put key in ignition and turn to on position, wait 30 seconds.
3. Step on the brake pedal and hold for another 30 seconds.
(This puts a current drain on the computer system to erase the memory.)
4. Release brake pedal.
5. Remove key from ignition.
4. Reconnect negative battery terminal.
5. Re-calibrate the ABS and speed sensors by driving the vehicle over 15 mph
for at least 10 seconds.
6. Park vehicle, turn off ignition, start vehicle, wait five seconds, go for a test
drive at various speeds.
Now the lights should be off and stay off.
* If the lights still remain on or only come on at certain speeds continue below.
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
2. From the top of the rear differential unplug harness.
3. Inspect wires for damage.
4. Inspect harness plug for corrosion.
5. Remove old speed sensor.
6. Put oil on o-ring of new sensor.
7 Put dielectric grease on harness connections.
8 Install new sensor.
9. Reattach harness.
NOW Repeat steps 2 through 6 above for RESETTING LIGHTS
If the lights still remain on then the front wheel ABS sensors may be bad.
Scan vehicle with an error code reader.
Refer to error code descriptions.
Before replacing expensive parts maybe have the dealership further diagnose
