Subject: 2000 4.7 5 sp tranny pops out of gear

Message:
Has anyone had, or heard of, problems with the Manual transmission "popping" out of 1st gear? This started with my 2000 Dakota 4x4, 4.7 quadcab within a month of purchase. The dealer fixed it under warranty and six months later it happened again, but not as frequently. This lower frequency was do to driving style: rolling while shifting into 1st rather than at stop. If you are having this problem (truck shutters and sounds like someone hits you from behind) the way to reproduce it is to shift from 2nd or neutral to 1st at a complete stop. Took me 4 visists with the dealer the first time to figure this out. My t-case also cracked within 2 weeks of ownership. I baby this truck - it is not a case of abuse - my past toyotas have stood up to harsher offroad use with no problems like this.

I had this same problem with my '99 CC 4x4, with the 5.2L. Mine would roll a few feet in first and then pop out. It sounded like crap when it done this. The dealer found that it had the wrong 1-2 shift fork, and they replaced it under warranty. They said Dodge had a batch of manual's with this incorrect shift fork in them. You may have got one of these. Other than that, the manual was a great transmission. I now have a 2000 QC 4x4 with the 5.9L automatic, and this transmission is a real piece of crap!!! I hate it!! I will be trading it off, after winter. Hope this info helps your problem.

Hello Rayn,

I had the same prob with the tanny and t-case you described. Took the dealer a week and all the sudden found the problem when they had to pay for a rental. I was told the syncos were shot. Cuz it took them 9000 miles to figure out the problem the tranny was shot. They wanted me to buy it cuz of my driving habits. BS, I luckaly took it in at 600 miles and documented all my visits. Then they tried the same hocky thing about the t-case. They claimed I drove it on pavement with 4x4 engaged. I said no. That took a little convising too. Well I now have a new t-case that has the same prob. Tranny has been great when they replaced it.

t-case sucks.

My 2000 CC 3.9 had the same problem. I took it back twice, dealership told me it was my driving (the old "girl can't drive stick" thing, arg). Finally when I took it back to get the front rotors replaced I mentioned the tranny. They found a TSB regarding the shift rail and detent spring (I think both or just the spring were replaced). Problem solved. Does yours pop out harder when you accelerate harder? That's what mine was doing.

I have the same problem with my 2000 QC 2WD (actually, I started another thread some time ago under the title "2000 Quad Cab Manual Trans problems"). I will definitely print out these postings and take them to the dealer when I bring it in for the third time to try to get it fixed. Thanks for all the help, and for letting me know it's not just my problem.

YES! I just returned from the dealer who said the problem was mine, "I must not be getting it into gear correctly." And since they could not duplicate the problem, they would not fix anything. This was the second visit for this vehicle. Thanks! The dealer will be getting a load of all your emails tomorrow!!! jb
P.S. Mine is a 2000 Dodge Dakota Club Cab, manual, 5.2.

Jessica -

There is a TSB on the problem, they don't need to recreate the problem to fix it. The TSB was issued in March '02 (I believe). Might be able to do a search and find it.

OVERVIEW:

This bulletin involves replacement of the shift shaft lever to allow the addition of a new detent spring and plunger.

MODELS:
1999 - 2000 (AN) Dakota
1999 - 2000 (BR/BE) Ram Truck
2000 (TJ) Wrangler
2000 (XJ) Cherokee

NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO WRANGLER OR CHEROKEE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A NV3550 MANUAL TRANSMISSION, AND TO DAKOTA OR RAM TRUCK VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A NV3500 MANUAL TRANSMISSION THAT WERE BUILT ON OR BETWEEN NOVEMBER 20, 1999 (MDH112OXX) AND MAY 17, 2000 (MDHO517XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The customer may complain that first or second gear may not stay fully engaged. This condition may often occur once the gear has been selected and as the clutch is initially released. This condition may be intermittent in its occurrence.

DIAGNOSIS:

1. Verify that full motion of the shift lever is allowed by the gear shift lever boot, the inner gear shift boot, and the console. The boots or console may be out of place and/or position.

2. If full motion of the transmission shift lever has been verified, and the customer has complained of the above condition, then perform the Repair Procedure.

NOTE: SEVERAL ITEMS MAY CAUSE A SIMILAR CONDITION, BUT REQUIRE TRANSMISSION DISASSEMBLY TO DIAGNOSE. THE TECHNICIAN SHOULD INSPECT THE DISASSEMBLED TRANSMISSION FOR BROKEN TOOTH POINTS, A BENT OR FRACTURED SHIFT FORK, OR FOR PARTS WHICH HAVE FAILED DUE LACK OF LUBRICATION. THE REPAIR PROCEDURE FOR THIS TSB INVOLVES ONLY THE REPLACEMENT OF THE SHIFT SHAFT LEVER AND THE INSTALLATION OF THE DETENT SPRING AND PLUNGER.

PARTS REQUIRED:

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Using the appropriate year Service Manual, Group 21 Transmissions, remove and disassemble the transmission to the point where the front transmission housing has been removed.

2. Remove the old shift shaft lever.

3. Install the revised shift shaft lever p/n 05072248AA.

4. Verity that the notches in the shift fork arms are aligned.

5. Rotate the shift shaft lever and bushing downward (out of the fork arms), to expose the detent bore in the new shift shaft lever (Fig. 1).

6. Lubricate the detent spring, detent plunger, and detent bore with transmission fluid, p/n 04874464.

7. Install the detent spring, p/n 04741137, into the shift shaft lever detent bore.

8. Install the detent plunger, p/n 05013348AA, on top of the detent spring and compress both parts into the bore (Fig. 2).

9. Press and hold the detent plunger in the lever bore. Then carefully rotate the lever upward into the shift fork arm notches. Be sure the detent plunger is seated in the fork arms before proceeding.

10. Following the Service Manual instructions, complete the assembly of the transmission and install the transmission in the vehicle.

11. Verify the correct transmission fluid level.
