I just bought a '97 dakota extended cab, and I've got a problem with my seat backs slipping when I give her the juice. My wife and friends whine when I dump them in the back. Anyone else had this problem or is it just me? Any easy fixes?

My drivers side slips and I can't stand it any longer. I am most likely going to take it in and have it fixed. I just wonder how much$$$ it's going to cost?

Well my drivers side still slips bad now, I wonder if I had an accident if I could sue Dodge?
I called Chrysler Corp. to see if there was a recall on this problem, there is not. I was advised to go to a junk yard for the part, I said I think not!! I have had problems with my 1994 LHS seat also. One gear in the power seat was stripped, so went to get a new one $500.00 for the gear, I said I think not!! They said go to a junk yard....hmmmm I bought junk I guess?

Had this problem on my '99. Turned out to be the cable for the release mechanism. The lever that is mounted in the back of the seat to allow rear passengers to tilt the front seat forward, has a cable much like a bicycle brake cable and housing. The housing was kinked upon installation and eventually the cable inside frayed and hung up in the housing. This kept the seat-back latch only partially engaged. Any bouncing around or really hard acceleration would cause the latch to disengage. The fix is to replace the cable.
Hope this helps.
Blue Skies!

Mine does the same thing....but I have found that
if, after I move the seat back forward to let the back passengers out, when I move it back to the position I want it, I pull up slightly on the lever, and then pull forward on the seat back, most of the time it locks. It is annoying though.
By the way I have a 1997 Dakota, 4X4.

Just removed my drivers' recliner mechanism.

The mechanism has several pieces riveted together.

On mine the heaviest metal on the part (1/8" pressed steel
plate) that attaches to the seat with 2 bolts is TORN 90%
through just ahead of the pivot and ratchet mechanism,
just behind the handle return spring. There is a 13/16" gap
at the top and 5/8" of metal left holding my rear seatback
ON the seat. The tear is the shape of a piece of pie and is
about 2-1/4" long (out of a 2-7/8" width).

When this happened, it also pulled out the rivet holding the
upper end of the sprocket "wheel".

The whole thing collapsed without warning. A little
disconcerting to be driving along one second and staring
skyward the next.

i've found three things that work for that...
first is to not gas on it...
second is that if it get REALLY bad, take the slide out and weild it together
third is to take it out, with a fine die grinder, make deeper grooves for the two halves to mesh...
