I had the EXACT same problem, last fall & some of the winter. The dealership said that there was nothing wrong. I forgot about it this summer until it started to do it again in September. I took it to a good mechanic (he's a racing dodge guy) who replaced the battery... it's been perfect since.

I have the exact problem, but it is on a 93 6 cyl dakota. I did replace the battery (the original was the wrong size) and was ok for a couple weeks, but it started happening again. It is getting pretty cold where I am. Any suggestions.

Had a problem very similar .... or it would act like the fuel pump was going, i.e; fuel starved.
It would quit, then restart after a few minutes.
My mech traced it to the Electronic Ignition triggering mechanism. Replaced that, and haven't had any trouble since. Been a year ago, now!

I have had the same problem with 1999 Dodge Dakota Sport 6 cyl. 2/20 The truck sat all day
with out being moved. Weather: light rain damp.

2/21 7am tried starting it would not turnover
2/22 added dry gas --would not turnover
2/22 let sit the rest of the evening
2/23 engine will turn over --wont run unless
keep foot on gas
2/24 added 2 gallons of gas , same prob as 2/23

Since I bought the truck new I have had the
catalytic converter replaced approx 8 times
and O2 sensor replaced once

I seem to only have problem during damp and/or cold weather. Im in Western NY.

my 87 blazer has just done the same thing today. went dead right in the middle of an intersection. nice one, huh? it had done it occasionally before today, but now it won't run at all without constant gas.
so here here i am looking for possibilities of what the problem might be before i get it towed to the garage.

Suzi, Are you driving a "cebby"? It could be the Throtttle position sensor (Tps), dirty/went broke and or the Idle air control motor (IAC),dirty or went broke or the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve (EGR) leaking when it should be closed and or pick your favorite. How was it driving before quitting on you....the more you input the better...More info please.

yep, a cebby. it was running fine, however every once in a while it would go dead when i would go to brake. i let it sit yesterday for about an hour, went to start it again and it would barely even idle without missing, turned it off and started it again-- ran as good as ever. i was able to get to get it to a garage then without the need of a tow. i figure i should at least take it in for a tune-up if anything, and find out what my problem is.

i can't complain too much about the truck. it has been very good to me for going on five years now, especially being as old as it is.

i know this is a dodge forum, it it has been the most informational site i've found online thus far.

appreciate the info ;)

One thing I have noticed in the year and a half
since I replaced the injectors - is that I get
perfect starts every time. We have had almost
two weeks of -20 to -30 cold, no problems.
The idle is smooth too.

before running out to get a new sensor .has anyone taken the IAC out of its bore and cleaned it with carb cleaner and a brass brush. the carbon build up can cause it respond slower ,and in cold weather with the way aluminium contracts it may even get stuck.
the tps can be checked with a digital multimeter.
the center wire is the feed wire, with ingnition on and engine not running,at idle throttle plates closed it should have a voltage of not less than 200 millivolts, at full throttle it should have a voltage of not more than 4.8 volt.
the voltage increase should be smooth and even, any other way its considered garbage.

I had same problem with my '99 6cyl 4X4. After replacing throttle sensor it still happened(wet weather, cold) I finally realized that when I let the gas tank go below 1/4 and then fill up I have the problem all over again. Started using gas line anti-freeze when I let tank get low and I haven't had this problem for over 1 1/2 years

well i took it to one mechanic-- said it was fine and the gas lines were froze.

i've done a little more research and i think that maybe the throttle body has lots of carbon deposits on it or just needs adjustment?

http://www.minimopar.net/idleproblems.html

do you think that might be it?

i cleaned off the gas throttle earlier today with wd-40 and thought maybe that might help if it was sticking any. it hasn't stalled on me yet.. so i suppose i shall see.

thanks ;]

... or it could be about 20 other different things, from what i've been told. lol.

i'm going to get a different opinion on thursday.

this just surprises me a bit. it's the most trouble i've ever had out of my truck and the first time it's ever had a problem with actually functioning for me since i've had it, but she's getting older though, so i suppose it's to be expected.

exclusive for Nick graham, the truck is a 1997 therefore it is fuel injected, therefore it has NO CARBORATOR therefore it has NO CHOKE
