Dennis, it could be ball joints... there are several postings on this topic, if you do a search you can read them and decide if that's what it may be.

I have the same year truck as you and so far: the brake rotors have gone three times (as of two days ago), ball joints went (and I replaced them with custom ball joints that are able to be lubed), cat went, and right now my gas gauge has begun to wander...so aside from these, what I think are small problems, its been a great car for the three years I have had it.

But mind you it has also been in two rather serious accidents; one, I was hit in the rear and the bed went into the cab. The other was on the passenger side and cost nearly $10,000.00. So that probably helped with the cat and gas tank problems. But hey, who knows. Heh

Thanks for the replies I guess this isn't covered under the warranty. My truck has 56,000 km on it OR is it.

Depends if that noise is the Ball Joints or the Cat. Also, it depends on what may be wrong with the ball joints. If they are no longer lubbed. They HAVE to replace them under warranty because it is a design flaw, plus i think its covered under the 7 year warranty just like the cat is.

Go down to your local Dodge Dealership and see if you can get info on the noise without having to pay for them to look for the problem. I got lucky and have a friend in parts and service here so when I came down he just went outside and shook the car a few times when the cat went and when the ball joints went and he told me what was wrong and if i wanted it replaced under warranty.

I decided to go with the factory cat (which was probably not a cool idea with all the problems people have with the factory mopar cats and I went to a custom body shop and had them custom make ball joints for me.

RE: 98Dakota V6 3.9 tranny / ECM?
IP: Logged

Message:
My '98 has been in the shop on and off for 3 weeks with intermittent shifting problems.

Problems with the shifting began when the winter temperature dropped to -30C, here on the Canadian Prairies...(above normal temps for this time of year)

Governor sensor, and EGO sensors codes displayed along with 'check engine' light. Sensors changed $230.00, and problem persists. Computer re-flashed for $55.00 at the Dealer, no difference.

Pressure gauge attached and taped to the radio antenna for the driver to monitor. When it shifts properly, there is about 1 psi / per mile per hour of ground speed. When it reads 53 psi starting the in-drive function, the transmission will usually drive in 3rd gear...sluggish of course. When the gauge reads '0' psi at startup in drive, then the tranny usually stays in low or 1st gear for 20 blocks or so...reving the poor engine to 3500 to drive at 40kph...
After that, it MAY decide to shift normally for awhile, or until another red light....

Although the guys at the transmission shop have been very persistent and amicable, I'm getting a bit frustrated..... and could use some other suggestions... maybe from the ATRA association members?

Thanks

Jim

Problem with vibration noise in rear of truck. Took to local dealer who road tested it and said that the seperator plate and valve body check ball had to be replaced w/rubber. They installed but did not take care of the problem.

Now they are telling me it is a catalytic convertor problem (which never came up before).

Any TSB, recalls, notices out on 1999 catalytic convertor problems consistent with this description.

thanks,

I have a 99 Dakota SLT w/ the 3.9 V/6 and I have an erratic sift problem w/ my trans. It hangs from 2nd to 3rd 'till I hit around 4k RPM's (usually) and I have already changed out my trans filter and fluid and replaced the fluid w/ ATF+3 fluid. This did not cure the problem. If anyone can give me some suggestions on my problem or if they know if a 727 Torqueflite trans will swap in place of the P.O.S. trans the're putting in these things, please let me know. I really appreciate it!!

Hi Rob. I don't want to sound stupid here, but have you checked the adjustment of your TV cable at the throttle body. Sounds like your's may be too tight (no slack). I've been playing around with mine to improve performance and now it holds the shift points for 1-2 and 2-3 a little to high if I'm not firm on the gas. It is a simple adjustment you can make. Take off the air hat. facing the front look at the cable on the left rear of the Throttle Body. Gently push off the white clip holding the cable position, allow it a little slack, and push the clip back on. Drive it, and adjust again if necessary. But don't give it too much slack or you'll end up with doggy performance.

Here are two recalls . Hope it helps.

Manufacturer Recall Information
Brakes Model: Dakota

Manufacturer Recall Number: 00V193

Units Affected: 40000

Defect: Certain pickup trucks built with 2.5L engines have been built with inadequate clearance between the left front brake tube and the power steering hose.

I have a 99 dakota and i haven't had to many problems wiht it. i rolled over 100,000 recently and all the problems i have is a leaking oil pan and a leaking power steering hose. minor problems. i just was wondering about a mod diode i saw. it goes in the IAT (Intake Air Tempature) sending unit. it bypasses the manifold and the diode fits in the plug. i put it in and it gave me about 12 more horses. i am curious to know if it is safe. also as far as recalls on a 99 dakota, there is a recall on the seat belts. something in the actuall clip is not working properly. Go to you nearest dodge dealer to have it fixed they'll know about it,. thanks Garrett
