It is better to torque with a torque wrench. The even tightening across the wheel is what you are looking for. Good luck

I also have replaced my rotors/pads 6+ times. OF course I need to replace them again. The last time I replaced with Raybestos cross drilled and ceramic pads. Still warping. I'm thinking about installing powerslots and whatever they recommend for a brake pad. If anyone has done this, and has some feedback, I'm all ears. I have gone to the NHTSA website and lodged a complaint. I doubt it will do any good but it's worth a try.

Holly, I used the Raybestos SeverStop products, the drilled and slotted rotors, and the pads to match. Since my last post on this thread, and almost 15,000 miles later, no warping at all. I wonder if the ceramic pads are your problem, they are designed for much higher operating temps. Anyway, that is what worked for me, and i sympathize with all you guys, it is very frustrating dealing with this. But Dodge isn't the only one with this problem, be asssured that trading manufactures will only trade problems.

Holly,

I had the Raybestos Power Stops and ceramic pads installed 8,000 miles ago. They're warped as well.
I am leaning toward the possibility of the rear brakes not automatically adjusting properly as they are supposed to, or maybe the configuration of the ABS. I have never been a fan of ABS and I may just disconnect it, then have the rotors turned again, and wait and see. Good Luck!

I am a Chrysler Master Tech at local dealer. With the help of some of other techs we have found a pretty good fix for warped rotors. All of our models are plauged with this problem. Our fix is to have the rotors frozen. We have a local company called 300 Below Inc. You can get more info at www.300below.com. Have froze several sets with no problems afterward. Including several Intrepid Police cars. We freeze the new ones before installing them.

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota V6 4x4 short bed
and had a problem with the brakes grabbing,
to the point that the truck and steering wheel
shook. I took it to a privately owned garage
and they turned the rotors. The brakes were
smooth as silk for about 6 months, then it
slowly started all over again. Now it's right
back to where it was before. When I had the
rotors turned, the mechanic said the warping
of the rotors was due one of the following: 1)
the brakes getting heated, then running
through water, 2) improper tightening of the
lugs, or 3) just being too hard on the
brakes---standing on them alot. None of those
applied to my situation. I take very good care of
my truck and am a safe driver. It's very
frustrating having to deal with the same
problem again so soon. Someone told me
that a problem with the brake calipers could
cause warping of the rotors. Any truth to this?

Ok I'm back for an update.

my last post was in Oct and I had 96k miles and I'm up to 106k miles. Glad to say that I have no signs of warping yet over the past 6 months. But I think I've worn out the pads because they are starting to squeel.

Like I mentioned to do back in Oct. I have been manually adjusting the rear brakes about every 6 weeks and that seems to do the trick. I can't believe it that I got the cheapist autozone pads and rotors and those are holding up pretty well excluding the horrible amounts of brake dust.

By adjusting the rear "self adjusters" I'm finally doing ok. My next brake upgrade will be the rear stainless steel caliper/rotor upgrade for $750.00. The drum breaks are completly the problem and I've had them rebuilt twice now and the those "self adjusters" are just not working the way they are suppose to when you put your car in revers. Puting rotors in the rear I think is the key to our brake problems. Since I'm getting a bigger boat this month I'm going to do this upgrade to help my breaks out.

Anyhow..hope this helps other people.

1998 Dakota 2x4. 6 sets of front rotors and one set of rear drums due to warping. Been throught he wheel torquing and pattern advice from dealer. (Dealers are not admitting any culpability on this issue). Finally found a tech rep that siad the cause is the floating hub and rotor design used on many cars and trucke. The runout at the hub may be in spec but out on the edge of the rotor the runout increases which causes the pads to hit the rotor on every revolution and can overheat and cause warping. He advised having the rotors turned onthe car to dial out the run out. Ford dealers are doing this on all this design and when I went back to the dealer with this advice he said,"oh yea Chrysler has recommended this for 7 years". Again advice I could have used THE FIRST TIME I ASKED FOR HJELP! I asked to have them turned and of course the on car lathe was down. I haven't found a place that has an on car lathe for 2x drive cars but plan to try it. If it works then I will install drilled and slotted rotors to aid cooling and have them turned on the truch and hopefully install some non dusting brake media. That dust mixed with moisture play havoc on wheels if not washed off frequently.

I'm Crhrysler certified tech at a local dealer. I own a 2000 dakota and have done the brakes 2 times in the last 35k. I do probally 7 to 12 brake jobs on dakotas and durangos a week. Most of the brakes last 6 to 12 months regardless of what brands we use. I will probally upgrade to the Brembo cross-drilled and slotted rotors with their recommended pads the next time my truck needs brakes. My rear drums are adjusting properly and wearing evenly. the only thing i can say is That's the Mopar Difference!

I've had the same problems with the rotors on a 2001 dakota. Gone through lots! Where do you get the rear rotor conversion/upgrade? Anyone tried any front upgrades short of the $3000 from Stillen?

Well, I have an 01 QC, 4.7, manual tranny, and traler towing, tire and handling, etc.

I mention this cause I have the larger rear drums.

Having a manual, I also use the parking brake every time I park.

I mention this because using the parking brake keeps the rear brakes in adjustment. I also back up and hit the brakes every so foten-this does it too.

I have about 67,000, original everything, pull a sailboat some, and it still stops well.

Like TexasTodd, I have been lucky with brakes. 5 years since purchase, never had to replace the brakes! PA state inspected every year. Not driven real hard, nor have towed very much. Nevertheless, still seems like an unusually long time to go without at least a front brake job. Tires get rotated Monday, so I'll see if my streak will end. From the above posts, it looks like when I do have to replace the front brakes, I will get a dose of reality. What kind of front brakes should I get, when I have to get them?

Well add me to the list. I now have a 2002 Dakota 4.7 Quad cab loaded. At under 20,000kms(and just over a yr old) I thought my breaks we going but then they got better. Then at the 25,000km mark they were F'ed. I called my local dealer and the dealership I got the truck from, I even have a friend who is a regional manager with Dodge and nothing could be done. They said its the weather in the north and its a very comon problem. I dont have a problem with the replacement of the brakes and rotors but its the kms that bug me. They asked me if I wanted to go with MOPAR parts as they are genuine parts for the Dakota. I laughed at them and said isnt that what I have on there now..answer was yes. I took it down to a local mech and got a lifetime warenty on both for $260 tax inc. It is now almost 3yrs old and under 34,000kms, but all is still well.

I put these on my 'OO QC 4x4 back in October of '04 and have been very satisfied with them. I have a Leer fiberglass cap (weight) and pull a trailer with two dirt bikes and associated riding and camping gear at least once a month. Raybestos Severe Stop Severe Duty with Super Stop Pads. I also manually
adjust my rear brakes when ever I change my oil, which is every 7,000 miles.

99 Dakota v8 club cab 2WD. Here's what I did to solve my "ohmygawdnotanothersetofrotors" problem. Bought the Brembo slotted (they warn you that cross-drilled could crack) rotors and Hawk Performance Ferro-Carbon HB306P.795 D746 HP SuperDuty pads. Be SURE to follow the break-in procedure! Good Luck! the pads aren't cheap!
