Let's talk about warped rotors now.I have a 2002 SXT that warped at 15,000k.The dealer claims to not know of a known problem. I did however reasearch this and there is tons of complaints about this .For starters log a complaint with NHTSA.There are a few there now. Dodge is very unresponsive in the complaint dept.
The local repair shops get ~2 a week of warped Dakota rotors.

Here you go for 98 - 03 Daks.

For a small price of only $3095.00 you can install 14 inch rotors with 6 piston calipers. Requires 17 inches wheels and I don't know of anyones whose done this.

My 2001 QC rotors warped at 18K mi. Dealer was full of excuses and denied any knowledge of a problem. I ate the expense to have turned. At 23K they were warped again. No towing, no hills, just poor engineering in my opinion.

Well fellas, I have a 2000 DAK with 80120 miles on it. I have replaced the rotors 6 times. I have tried the AutoZone cheapo brand, Advance Auto's brand, OEM replacement rotors that cost twice as much at a local parts store, all along with 3 changes of pads. Carbon Metallic, Semi Metallic, blah blah blah... Always the same end result.. Warped Rotors. I hate it, I hate it. That feeling of shaking my brains out the door when I am trying to stop at a red light, I wonder if the guy behind me can see my truck shuddering... sheesh... I RELIGIOUSLY torque the lugnuts to spec, it does no good. I have replaced the rear shoes, tightened up the grab, no good. The mechanism that is "supposedly" adjusting the rear shoes is a pitiful spindly piece of crap. It does NOT do it's job, If you pull your drums fellas, you will see a contracption that is 50 years old, a weak spring attached to what is supposed to be a clicking key riding on a toothed adjustment wheel. If you are lucky enough to get it to work, it won't hold for long.
The only thing I haven't tried is the drilled/slotted rotors, which is my last resort. I told my wife, if this didn't work, I was getting a kit to convert my rear shoes to pads to equalize the pressures of braking, obviously Dodge saw the light in that, and changed the rears to pads this model year. Here's to hoping the slotted rotors work!

I had my truck into the dealer for an unrelated issue and was told that I needed front rotors ($120 ea. Could not be turned) and pads ($70)and new rear shoes ($50). The grand total with labor was close to $600. I had a rear shoe that was not adjusting properly due to the adjuster being stuck down. It was worn to the metal. I'd had some pretty bad shuddering that I had been living with and the mechanic noticed during the test drive.
After I replaced the shoes and turned the drums on the rear, the shuddering was very significantly reduced. I can only surmise that this was due to the more effective rear brake reducing the amount of pedal needed and less pressure on the front rotors. The shudder worsened after a few days (I was too busy with other stuff to do the fronts). I put new NAPA rotors ($65 a wheel) and Raybestos ceramic pads ($65 a set) and the shuddering has gone away completely. I measured the runout on the outside of the front rotors and it was 0.005". The back side of one of the rotors had a rust deposit in the middle of the wear area.

Here is what I think happened:

1. The weakness of the rear brakes caused by the malfunctioning adjuster in conjunction with metallic brake pads caused excessive heat build up on the front rotors that resulted in some amount of warpage.

2. This warping caused spots on the rotor to not contact the pads, which allowed corrosion to build up, leading to further pulsations.

3. These pulsations were even further aggravated by the original rear brake issue causing the front brake to work harder.

4. Dealer tried to rip me off with an expensive brake job that would lead to same pulsations later.

So now I am going to pull the drums whenever I rotate the tires and check that the rear brake adjuster is working properly and continue to use the ceramic pads which dissipate heat better than the OEM metal pads. Oh, yeah, only take it to the dealer when it is covered under warranty.

I'll let you know if this works out for me.

Just wanted to let you fellas know what happened. Replaced crap rotors/pads and rear drums with Raybestos Severe Stop front rotors, and pads. Used their stock replacement drums for the rear about a month ago now. Brake pulsing and shaking is contained so far, but I am cautiously optimistic as I have thought to have won the Anti-Pulsing war before only to be let down later. I have registered over 4,000 miles on these new rotors so far with no warping. I am happy, if only I could keep from having to replace the friggin fuel pump every 6 months now..........UGH. That's another post for another thread, see the new thread by DAKinTN = thats me.......

The stock pad compound is too hard. The intense heat caused by the extremely hard pad is what's warping the rotors.

Pretty lame and inexcusable.

If you let your tank run dry or even get very low, you'll burn out the fuel pump. Modern FI pumps generate alot of heat and the fuel in the tank cools the pump.

As a Dakota Newbie, I was stunned when I had to replace my front rotors at 18,500 miles. There was chunks of metal missing from the inside braking surface of the rotors. I figured this is probably going to be a problem and now this confirms it. The guy at Advanced Auto told me there is a national shortage on these rotors and they had no idea when they would get theirs in. I guess I got off cheap replacing them and the pads for abour $100 from Autozone.

I think the guy at Advanced was either drunk and/or retarded. I order about 80 sets of these each week and there is never a problem getting them.

BTW, I realize there's quite a few of our trucks on the road but I order more rotors for Dakotas than for any other vehicle.

Mr.Hanky are you aware that the reason that the stock pads are hard it that it is now basicly illegal to make anything out of asbestos? If you could make pads out of an asbestos material all the warped rotors cease to happen. But, because the pads have to be made harder the rotors are now made softer, ( one has to be hard and the other soft, if both are hard you don't stop and if both are soft they don't last) so they warp instead of the pads. Almost eveeryone I know with a late model vehicle has this problem at least to a minor point.

Hey guys, just a couple of points:
a) Make sure all the contact points, slides, pins etc. are FREE to move and lubed, ditto the caliper pistons.
b) The rear adjusters work great if they are lubed and turn easily. The lever that "clicks" on the starwheel must be in GOOD shape- replace them, they're cheap.
c) Bed-in new brakes, it extends their life and decreases the chance for warpage.
d) I do all this, buy the best pads I can get ( rotors don't vary as much in quality I find) and I still get the odd comeback (on every type of vehicle including motorcycles!)
e) Many of the new pad materials coat the rotor surface- this is what gives the increased friction coefficient. Rust starts on the iron below this coating and causes pulsation, especially when it starts to flake off- no solution that I know of!
