About a month ago my 2000 Durango SLT+ (74k miles) developed the intermittent automatic locking/unlocking of the doors. After some research on the Internet I found TSB 08-023-03 that exactly described the problem I was having with the vehicle. About a week later the problem got worse and my rear passenger door started "buzzing" when the doors would intermittently lock. Then, one day the problem wound up locking me out of the Durango, with it running! After a 5-mile walk and a broken garage window to retrieve a key, I decided to pull the fuse to the locks until I could resolve the problem. This forced me to use the key or lock pin on the door to unlock/lock the doors - which was annoying at first, but better than accidentally being locked out of the vehicle with the keys in the ignition.

Just this morning I took my the Durango to the dealer to have this fixed. Unfortunately for me, it's out of warranty at 74k miles. As I write this they're performing the repair for TSB 08-023-03 and also replacing the burnt-out rear passenger door lock actuator (which was buzzing).

Estimated repair bill: $500 total

:(

Joe,

I haven't fixed it yet - I'm waiting for warmer weather. My plan is to get the lock assembly from a dealer (about $90) and replace it myself. The door panel is easy to remove, and it looks like the lock assembly is pretty easy to remove too.

My husband drives a 2002 Dakota Quad Cab SLT and his power locks just plain old stopped working. The power unlocking still works, but not locking. The only way to lock the truck is to do it manually inside or with the key outside. We have an appointment on Monday at the local dealer to get it looked at. We are still under warranty, and if I find out we have to pay to have this fixed I might go bezerk.

Hi Leslie,
Did your husband get his power locks fixed by the dealership after all? Do you happen to know what went wrong?

Thanks,
Joe

I have a 2000 quad cab. The problem is with the lock/latch mechanism. I have replaced 3/4 on my Dakota. All went out within 2 months of one another. The mechanism is approximately $75 for EACH door. I replaced my own. They aren't extremely difficult, but they will challenge you. Only 6 screws in the door panel-3 on the bottom-1 next to the side mirror (all phillips head), 1 inside of the door handle on the inside, and one in the middle of the door (torx head). Once the door panel is off you will need to loosen the bolts that hold the window track in place near the latch. Than it's off to the races. Dodge color coats all of the parts of the latch so you can't hook it up wrong. If you have the dealer do the repair, I was told by mine that it would cost about $200 per door. After I fixed the first one, it's a piece of cake.

Good luck-

I too have the random door locking problem. The only time it does it is if it's running. The only time I ever have the truck running when I'm not in it is in the winter to warm up. I have a remote start on my key chain, so it doesn't bother me that much any more. I do have an extra key hidden under my truck just in case though.

I redid my locks last year - all 4 for $250 if you do it yourself. I was a little pissed off that they can all go out within about 2-3 months. I was even more pissed when you have to buy the whole latch assembly not just a part that went out. Remember if you do this yourself that you adjust the handle to open the door properly or you will have to take the door apart to adjust it.

Poor design....

Scott-GREAT point. I was convinced that the passenger side/front door was defective. I took the door apart 3x before I figured out that there is a set screw that needs to be tightened.

I also own a 2000 Dodge Dakota quad cab and I have had both driver side door locks(solenoids) fail (buzzing noise and won't lock with remote). You have to buy the complete latch assy to fix the problem. By reading all the post, Dodge parts from Mexico, China or where ever they get them from could use a little quality control. They are junk!!

I have a 93 Dakota. The latch assembly (I believe it is called) is rusted inside the door so that I have to leave both windows down and open just from the inside. Where is the best place to buy the replacement parts? (4X4, ext. cab) Do I need to go to a dealer? About how much do they cost?

This should be recalled.

Okay, I've stumbled across this website while looking for a
power latch solenoid (that's what the dealer said needed
replacing) as both front doors on my 99 durango are buzzing.
Okay, here's the first question. I've taken out all the screws and
the knob and collar on the side mirrors, so everything is loose
but around the locks/windows buttons, is there a "catch" to
getting that cover off so the door comes free? Yes, I am a
female, and today an empowered one, just need a little
direction. Also any advice on the best place to get these
replacement parts. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks
Shel

Once you have taken the screws out. The door panel is held on by plastic clips. You will need to pry the door panel off the door frame. There is a tool you can buy or you can use a screw driver. If you break a clip you can get some more at the auto parts store. Then you will need to unhook the lock bar and the handle release bar for the inside and outside handle from the latch. My 2000 has the lock system and latch all in one unit. It was about $50 each for the front door latches in 2003 when i did mine. It was a dealer only part. You can verify that with your autoparts store. Then to remove the latch you will have to unscrew the 3 star screws around the latch in the door jamb. Then unclip the wiring to the latch and then remove it. Make sure when you put the new latch in that you adjust the outside handle clip to open the door. You will notice it when you take it off. It takes a little time so I would make sure I had the parts before I removed the latch or else the door will not stay closed. I hope this helps. It took me about an hour to do them with a little cusing because there is not alot of room for big hands inside that door.
Good Luck..

I have been experiencing the "buzzing" for about two months now in my 2000 Dakota on the passenger side. It will still lock/unlock, but will not unlock using the key on that side. At least now I know that I am not the only one. It does make me wonder how many have to be defective before they will issue a recall? It seems to be a pretty common problem. Coincidentally, I got the "ball joint recall" repair yesterday and am happy to have that taken care of. Thank you all for your advice. It looks like I have a project for some weekend this month.

Thanks so much for all your help! I've got the parts on order as
of this afternoon, should be in on Friday. One was $80, one was
$72.00, so I didn't have as good of luck as getting them for $50,
but in the end if I can get these in alright, it will be worth it!
Plus I'll have the bragging rights of a female who can fix her own
truck, gotta love it! However, I'm sure I'll be back to ask more
questions! Hope you all are here when I need you again, this
was great!

I have a 2000 durango and at 2 years old my driver and rear passenger electric locks began to buzz violently. I replaced them myself for $145 and now another 2 years to the month, the driver door electric lock is bad again. The dealer said they know of the problem, and the solution is for me to buy more of them.

Traded my 2000 w/ the door lock problems in October 2004 for a 2004 Ram 4x4. Best decision I ever made. Drove the Dak 600 miles and got an avg. of 12.9 mpg at 70 mph. Traded it the day after I returned and my new Ram FULLSIZE 4x4 is doing 16 mpg. To heck w/ the door locks, Dodge has enough incentives- trade your pain! My thoughts anyway. Good luck to you all!

2000 Durango - same problems as above.
Right rear and left front door locks. The parts just came in.
I have personally complained via email to Dodge about this problem. They did not even give me the coutesy of a reply.
I have spoken with several Dodge engineers and they said they will not do a recall because they do not consider it a safety issue.
They are going to wait until some one dies because they can not get out of there vehicle after an accident. (They will probably blame that on the accident)
