Yes they are greaseable and yes they are good. Just as long you keep them packed of grease and not dry.

Dakotas are great

Great pieces of crap, after reading some of the posts here and having to deal with the bugs I am convinced that the Dodge division puts profit before quality. Here are some of the things my
4 x4 98 Dakota has had to offer me:
1. Exhaust leak (2 bolts broke off inside of head, Mechanic says "engine must be overhauled")
many other people have had the same problem.
Dodge says "It's not our fault, deal with it!"
2. Catalytic converter goes bad at 50k, Oh well!
piece of cat plugs muffler. (new cat and muffler)
also new Oxygen sensors.
3. premature wear of upper and lower ball joints, truck now sounds like a horse carriage.
4.adding insult to injury the Differential locks while driving 65MPH in the middle of a Los Angeles freeway, the Shaft falls off. The freeway has to be closed momentarily while my burden is pushed of to the side.
current status: at the shop.

Thanks Dodge! and Thanks AAA!

For what I hear, your user name does not fit your profile at all. I agree with you. I think dodge is just like any other american piece of junk. They only reason I bought mine is because it fits my needs in terms of versatility(QuadCab). Trust me if I had the money, I would have gone with TOYOTA. I know I'm going to hurt some people in here; specially the patriot ones, but that is exactly how these companies are manipulating the public to buy their cheap quality-expensive products. With the slogan "Be a Patriot Buy American", they have many proud americans by the balls. Maybe if we all start buying imports, they will snap out of it and start putting their act together. Oh wait!! we already tried that and the only thing we got was for the american corporations to put pressure on the government to make laws that would make it harder for foreign companies to export to the U.S. So now we have to pay more for an import(figures)which force some of us to settle for an American Piece Of Crap. GOD I LOVE MY COUNTRY!!.
P.S. Sorry If I pissed any of you, but a true patriot, defends his/her country from any opressor(FORD,GMC,CHRYSLER,EXXON,HALLIBURTON..etc..etc).

Guys,
I actually heard about this ball joint failure problem from a coworker who said he saw it in the local news. (Durango / Dakota). I own a 98 4x4 318 that see's occassional off road use as well as yanking a boat around in the summer. With over 110,000 miles on it the only major repair was a blown transaxle 3.92 ratio 2 months ago and break pads same time. I did replace the clutch because of the milage but it really had about 10k more life on it. Maybe I'm just lucky. Other than this it has served me well.

Thoughts??

Dmonk, my 98 dak has nearly 192K miles on it, I bought it with 120K, its a 2X4 with the 5.2/auto, and just last week changed out all four ball joints with the MOOG "Problem Solver Ball Joints" they are a lot bigger in overall mass than the stockers and have zerks and lifetime warranty. The only gripe I have was with the dang rivets that hold the originals in, fourteen little nightmares beating them out for four hours. I still love my Dak, its ashamed that Dodge couldn't come up with a better design all around on the front end of these trucks.

Keep in mind that "lifetime warranty" does not mean that they will be replaced for free when they wear out. The warranty covers manufacturer defects only, not wear and tear. Therefore, with Dodge's crappy front suspension design (worse on 4x4), you're going to be replacing your Moog's again in the future -- grease or no grease -- warranty or no warranty. Kinda sad actually -- paying those engineers all that money to design a crappy front end that looks like something that belongs under a mini-van for these DAKS.

Again, 110,000 miles on and off road yanking 3600lbs around to the lake all summer without a squeak from the front end isn't bad. I guess when the time comes to replace them I'll let you know how painful it is. Until then I'll keep trucking. All I can say is the Dodge sure has been a great truck especially when compared to the Toy Tacoma it replaced back in 98. Nothing against the tacoma it just wasn't nearly as capable or as comfortable as the Dakota has proven to be. In 5 years I'll probably step up to the hemi Ram or the cummings 4x4. Until then I'll probably put another 100k on it. Again maybe I just got lucky.

bought '00 Dak last april now i have 62k and have replaced pass side upper bjs front rotors, brake pads. on top of that, dealer told me u joint was almost gone (qouted a price of $270) It seems that at 62k this is premature and so do other people apparently. if the transfer case goes i am dumping this truck. i absolutely love the looks of the Dak, but it has way to many chronic problems as i understand it. now im going to check all BJs. if my wheel falls of before then chrysler is going to have a whale of a lawsuit against them.

i had a 99 v6 dakota sport club cab and had to replace all 4 ball joints and both sides of the upper control arm bushings at 60k miles because i was tired of the truck wandering the road & trying to veer off into a ditch past 40 mph (this after replacing both vehicle speed sensors not too long before, it's such a common malady the local dodge dealer keeps the sensors at the parts counter instead of in the back room)and now, after trading it in on a 01 club cab r/t, i'm starting to see the start of the same problem i had with the 99's front end, popping noises when turning and going over slight bumps, at just 30k miles. i am not made of money and do not care to cough up another $600-$800 dollars fixing the same b.s. problem. my 91 s10 blazer 4x4 took 210k miles to need the same replacement parts. smells like a rat to me.

My problem is the ball joints. I have a 98 which has the 7/70 extended warranty, and I talked to the dealer about ordering uppers and lowers. He called me back today and said the uppers he can get in a few weeks but the lowers, there is a nation wide back order so it will be MONTHS before any are available. Sounds like CD knows these are a problem but pulled all the bad BJ's and is trying to replenish there stock with better ones. Sounds like they will do things under wraps instead of doing a nationwide vehicle recall.
