There can be other causes for the noise - you won't likely convince the dealer they are bad unless they really are. Noise in a turn is not how they are tested.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Thanks for all the great info on this topic. This site rocks, and served me well through the warped rotor/brake drum issue. Now that I'm through that one..

Some questions about the BallJoint Recall:

-If I were to replace all the joints and busings with MOOG and SuspensionEnergy parts, would DC reimburse my costs if I have the work done AFTER they made a recall?

-What if I have the repairs made at a shop other than the Dealer, will DC compensate the cost?

-What is the Dealer going to replace the faulty joints with? Another OEM part? Any word on a part number?

Great posts guys, keep up the good work. It's paying off.

I've got a 97 Dakota club cab 2 wheel drive and had one upper
and both lower joints replaced in July 03 after having terrible
popping and grinding sounds while turning at slow speeds and
over bumps. I've filed a complaint with the NHTSA so hopefully
they will include the 2 wheel drives in their recall soon!

Some of you with 03's may be disappointed!

Units manufactured after 12/31/2002 are not eligible for the recall / replacement joints.

Here's the DC document.

Recall work on my Dak was completed at the dealership yesterday. 90 minutes from start to finish. Front-end alignment was not done after the installation of the new ball joints.

If your truck did not get the required toe adjustments, take it back to have the recall completed. All dealerships know that the recall procedure includes toe adjustments and if they choose to not do it, then they have to answer to DC (if you inform DC).

I own a 2002 Dakota SLT Quad cab 2wd.
I received my warranty extension for my upper ball joints. This really does not give me peace of mind. Does anyone know why the 2wd trucks have not been recalled too? Are their ball joints made of a superior material :)or do they just take longer to wear out than do the 4x4's? Can anyone tell me where you can find info on the number of 2wd's that have had to replace their ball joints? I have written to Chrysler and they gave me the standard answer-only 4x4's recalled but, we will extend your warranty. This leads me to believe that it is only a matter of time before I have a problem. I have also written to the NTHSA and have not had a reply. Could someone tell me what other steps I can take to include the 2wd in a recall? I do not want to end up a statistic. Thank you very much for any and all help.

Relax annie. If you want further recall action, take it up with DC and NHTSA...nowhere else can you get action without paying a lawyer.
The warranty will cover upper ball joint failure as many times as it occurs up to 10yrs/100000miles. You will not have dangerous upper ball joint failure without a very noticeable symptom...clunking, thunking type noises when you turn at low speeds (as if you are parking your vehicle). If your wheel falls off, its because you ignored the symptoms that happen first.

I got the letter from DC about extending the warranty on my 2WD Dakota QC. I had the upper joints replaced last August. It really ticked me off, because I am not hard on the truck. So I submitted all the paper work to DC.

Any idea how long it will take to get my money?

By receipt from the repair shop includes my VIN number. There was nothing in the DC letter about needing credit card statements. If they call and ask for that they will get an earful.

Verifying method of payment is not unusual under these circumstances. If your invoice/receipt does not show the details of the payment, be prepared to provide other documentation. They may not ask, but you never know.

I got a "warrenty letter" from Dodge. Since I was hearing a clunking noise, I took my '02 Dakota 2wd into the dealer. No great surprise, they confirmed that the upper ball joints were bad and replaced them for free.

Now I'm starting to worry about my '99 . . .

DC called today and said I should get a check in 5-10 days. He said they covered the alignment because I had both uppers done. Had it only been one ball joint, no alignment reimbursement.

I don't know how they figure that, but I'll take it.

BTW, my info was sent to them on January 13.

RE: Ball Joints & Inner Tie-rod

Well I've just been bitten by the DC bug...

I own a 2001 Dakota quad 4.7 4x4 51K on it and I just got back from the dealer. I had my Upper ball joints replaced last month under warranty. They did the required toe alignment. It still pulled to the right so I went to my friends shop to get it aligned and low and behold...

The lower ball joints are shot and I also need an inner tie rod.

DC required that I take it back to the dealer so they can look at it.They are trying to sell me the whole assembly because something about a seal and it might leak if you only replace the tie rod itself? Anyone have any info on this. They are trying to hit me for $907 just for the tie rod assembly! The lower ball joints are $517.

Anyone know how hard it it is to replace these items your self? Any special tools?

I'm also going to file complaints.
Thanks for any help

RE: Ball Joints - 2005 Durangos

Message:
Just researching as we have had a failure one of our 2005 Durango SLTs. We have several in a rental fleet here and the comfort of "it will only happen at low speeds while turning" does not really help as we are in a extremely steep hilly location and that constitutes all our driving. Plus they are usually loaded with 7 people on narrow roads with cliffs on one side.

So is anyone hearing anything about this problem continuing with the 2005 models?

We have to take our vehicles on a barge to another island to get to a dealer so a preventitive check up is hard to do.

I am getting conflicting info on whether it was the ball joint or cv joint that failed and have not seen it myself. The tire did not fall off but there was a pile of grease sludge, shredded metal and ball bearings on the ground near the front pass. tire.

The front wheels would not turn so they had to put it in 4WD to move it a bit to get it situated to be put on the flatbed.

Any comments or advice are appreciated!

Let us know when you are ready for a Caribbean vacation! http://www.artisticvillas.com

Thank you,
Eric
