Subject: 4WD service light and a question
IP: Logged

Message:
I own a 2001 Dakota 2WD 5.9 quad cab and the 4wd service light is coming on. The dealership has tried to repair 5 times with no success. Just wondering if any one else has had this problem yet?
Also anyone know how hot a rear end gets while driving? While towing my trailer last weekend started smelling gear oil in the cab again(rearend has been replaced twice under warranty 1st for howling 2nd cause the lsd burned up). I have an infared temp gun and it was over 400 degrees. I have never seen a rearend get that hot except when driven dry. Any Ideas would be appreciated. Thank You.

For the 4WD light, there is a TSB that instructs the dealer to replace the AC control in the Instrument Panel. The AC control in your truck is sending some incorrect messages via the vehicles data bus. The Instrument Cluster thinks it should turn on the 4X4 lamp. The new AC control will keep the 4X4 lamp off and you should not notice any problem with the AC.

It looks like they did fix the problem this time. They replaced the a/c module again and the light has not come back on. Hopefully, it won't come on again. They also replaced the gear oil with the $30 buck a quart synthetic stuff and we made our first trip with the trailer without a problem. That was really nice. Now I have to find some more gas milage. Already have the Mopar Performance cold air intake and Flowmaster exaust now I am looking at headers. Would also like a computer upgrade but don't want to run premium fuel(I do run mid grade though) any suggestions?I am also going to upgrade the ignition with the MSD6a and blaster 2 coil. What else could I do without voiding to much of the warranty and improve gas milage?

Well try this out...

My service $wd light came on Friday and the dealer as I was about to drive from Phoenix to Tucson and back and the dealer said no worries til I get back. I get to Tucson 2 hrs later and have lunch. Now the truck won't start no juice at all can't even jump it. So I replace the huge battery that comes with the tow package and everything seems great. The service 4wd light is even off. I have already had the recall service done. Problem is now the truck(full time 4wd will not shift into 4-LO or 4-Hi). So I took it to the dealer today where it sat for 3.5 hrs before they even looked at it and now they have to " call The service Star center in Detroit which won't get back to us until Monday". Any ideas???

Similar problem w/02 QC 4x4. Could not shift to 4hi or 4 lo. Service 4wd light came on. Additionally windshield wiper would not turn off, pulled fuse. Dealer said B(e)CM defective. Waiting for new one. You might check that out.

From the lexicon of auto trivia: BCM= Body
Control Module. A solid state computer that
sorts data between various body components
such as climate control, cruise control,
instrument cluster, radio, wipers, etc... Coded
to veh specifically by VIN. # and mileage so
special ordering is unavoidable.
Oh and since we're here... PCM for Powetrain,
TCM for transmission... You get the idea.

funny how on the 01 dakota when something as new as the electronic 4wd system is introduced to the consumers, that the manufacturer wont warranty all those fun little parts that freak out like they frequently do when you change something on the model from one year to the next...my service 4wd light is on, and because dodge doesnt feel it necessary to fix the problem under a "good faith warranty" at the least, they will never have my business again, and all my landscape buddies and construction buddies will just have to hear about what dodge thinks of their customers who just wanted a truck that could drive in four wheel for more than 50k miles without going to hell and inconveniencing myself and my wallet...thanks dodge, hope you lose all your business. i know youve lost mine and everyone i know.

I own a 93 dak and was just reading thhrough here for no reason and my question to the bunch of you, why would a 4wd service light come on if you own a 2wd truck, like what "black r/t" said Quote "i have a 2001 r/t and the 4wd light came on on mine too. the dealer replaced what is called an "H-back" and it has been fine since. "
Arent R/ts only 2wd???

I've got an '01 Quad 4WD that's having a similar problem. Not only does the service 4WD light come on but the transfer case actually switches into 4WD on its own. Had a control module, switch, and actuator replaced so far. When other folks had their serive 4WD light come on did it actually switch into 4WD too?

I also have an '01 4WD that the service light came on once. Since then, the 4WD selector does not light up, nor does the 4WD ingage. I have not changed any components yet. I'm trying to find out what the most likely cause is.

Rick R, check the stored codes and thqat should point to the problem. turn the on/off/on/off/on and your odometer will display the codes.

I have an '03 Dakota 3.9L. Truck was stuck in 4WD after last snow storm- service 4WD light came on. dash light would come on intermitently, along with 4HI light (while switch was in 2WD). Tranny shop inspected and found transfer case wiring harness fell on front drive shaft and got rubbed open. after repair of wires, all was well till i tried using 4lo to pull another vehicle out of mud. the 4lo indicator flashed a few times, then shifted to 2WD and Service 4WD light came back on. Now, no lights on switch, no 4WD, and only Service 4WD light is on. HELP!?!?!?!?!?

I have an '02 Quad Cab Dakota 4.7L pushing 80k miles. The Service 4WD light came on briefly and went back off a while back. Now there are no indicator lights on the 4WD switch and it won't transfer out of 2WD. Drives fine but winter is coming and 2WD sucks in the Northeast winters. The odometer reads p DONE, and it just passed inspection. So does it boil down to an inexpensive bad switch or is it likely something much more ominous and expensive?

I have the same problem on my 01. I drove it on dry pavement for a couple miles in 4x4 hi, and then realized and turned it back to 2. Now the lights on (service), and none of the lights are on the 2wd 4wd switch. It stays in 2wd. Any luck with this?
