2001 Dakota 4WD.
Removing the battery or a dead battery can cause the computer to lose needed info in turn causing a 4wd light and no light on the 4wd switch. The dealer should reprogram the 4wd computer at no charge since this was not mentioned in the manual. The dealer will still they to charge you and have him call the service rep for the area. They will have to flash it. In the future you will need to plug a backup power source into the acc. plug to maintain memory. The dealer says this should not happen but it does. My guess is that the TCCM has a small battery cell that should maintain memory. I suspect that this battery dies. Then when removing the main battery it loses memory.
Transfer case. I haven't had this problem myself but have found that many of the servo's that shift the case in and out of 4wd get cold and freeze up. Many persons have brought them inside to warm the vehicle and others have just sat a heater under the transfer case over night. (heat rises) if it were me I would remove the servo and clean it up and spray it with plenty of WD40 or other silicone product to help keep moisture off.
I will say if had to do it over again I would have bought a left over 2000 which still had the floor shift. And no you can not replace with a floor shift without changing the transfer case. (I already checked)
The biggest problem I am having is finding dealers who still have the link to do the flash on the computer in order to get the right info in the 4wd computer.
Someday I may have to build a manual shifter myself.

Message: I have the 2005 Dodge Dakota the 3wd service light comes on every so often. Somtimes the 4low will start flashing going down the road. Last week I came out of work unlock my doors and heard the 4wd trying to engage with no key in it yet. I took it to the dealer of course would not do it then. He said Transfercase range position sensor circuit low and could not figure it out. told me keep a eye on it and let them know if it keeps doing it and charge me 150.00. I can't keep taking it to the dealer and they charge me everytime for nothing. Anyone figure this problem out yet?
