Hi Henry,

I did get the problem solved. Someone from http://www.dakota-durango.com/forum/ had the answer. If you go to that site, search on "TCCM" and select the thread on "Transfer case PROBLEM?" On 1/14/09 I posted with a copy of the answer someone gave me (from a different thread). I had to replace my Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) for about $75 from a salvage yard. It's not hard to do, you just have to take the dash apart to get to it. If you have trouble getting to the other post, let me know and I'll help you out.

Rich,

Thanks for the reply. I think I figured out what it is. Since I have no lights on the 4wd/2wd switch at all. The service 4 wheel drive light came on right after I had an aftermarket stereo installed, so I think when they had the dash off they must have inadvertently unplugged the 4wd control (tccm?). Does that sound plausible?
Since I know you have experience, what is the best way to get to that switch behind the dash... do I have to remove the whole dash or can I gain access by removing only a panel or two?

Thanks.

Henry,
Did you get the TCCM replaced? I'm about to take on this task and would appreciate any advice on getting to the unit. I'm going to document my process and post, because this seems to be a common problem and no answers on how to best get at the thing. Thanks

Henry & 45romeo,

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. If you think your problem is at the switch then you'll have to pull the dash to get at it and replace it. But I would check the TCCM first since it sends the power to the switch and if it's bad, you won't be able to confirm the switch.

The TCCM is located behind the center section of the lower instrument panel, to the right of the steering column. Just above and to the right of the gas pedal. You'll have to remove the lower most part of the panel to get at it but you shouldn't have to remove the entire dash. The tough part is that it's mounted up and behind a metal bracket so it's difficult to get out.

Henry, if you think yours might just be unplugged then you may be able to feel around for a loose connector and an empty slot in the module. The module is a little blue plastic box about 3"x5"x1" with a metal heat sink on the back and three wire slots on the front. That means there are three connectors that should be plugged in. If you find an empty slot, look for a dangling connector.

I don't want to cut and paste someone else's post from a different forum but I will say that the help I got from www.dakota-durango.com/forum was the key to my success. Look at my previous post and it will tell you how to get to the step by step instructions.

The other very valuable thing was subscribing to alldatadiy.com. It has everything you can think of to diagnose and fix problems on your truck, or other car. For the $26 subscription, it was indispensable. I now have a resource for many other nuisance fixes to be done.

Good Luck.

Rich

Okay here it is the answer to some the mystery.
1st there is a recall on for an update on many of the 4WD units. Check dealer.
Also: No where in the owners manual or service manual is any mention of having to provide backup voltage when disconnecting the battery. I have argued this point for some time but the dealer continued to argue with me. Finally after loosing my 4WD for the 3rd time they contacted Chrysler Tech and they confirmed a problem and recommended a back up voltage by using a jumper to the lighter plug.
I don't know if Dodge will admit this but I am being reimbursed by Dodge for the "repair".
I will say that since the take over by Fiat Customer Service is much better.
I have a 2001 Dakota and I finally have an answer to my on going problem.
For more details you can email me with your email and I will provide you with a copy of the repair order with details.
If voltage is lost the system can go into a default mode (2WD) and the system cut off the power to the switch in turn loosing the light! Sometimes you get a "Service 4WD" light and sometimes you don't. The dealer is the only way to correct the problem since only they have access to the 4WD computer. (Yeah that sucks)
Next time it goes bad I may look at installing a 4 position 12v powered switch to bypass that stupid computer (TCCM).
Good luck to all and hope this helps all of you. I would hope that Chrysler would send out a service bulletin to all dealers and inform all owners about the voltage problem.
This problem doesn't always occur but is likely if the battery is disconnected for an extended period.

I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota 3.9 Liter Club Cab and I am having the
same problem. The weird part is, the Service 4WD light came on
yesterday and my truck does not have 4WD. I wouldn't expect to
even have the 4WD module since I don't have the 4WD option. Any
suggestions?

Can you switch between 2WD and 4WD? If not, have your dealer check the Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM). As you can see from the previous posts, they have a tendancy to go bad if voltage to the system is lost. Replacing the battery without backup voltage will do it.

Good Luck!

After disconnecting the negative battery terminal,my 4wd service engine light came on for no reason. I contacted the dealer and they told me to disconnect the battery again and touch the two wires together for 5 seconds. It discharges any residual power in the system and resets the computer. This did the trick!! Awsome!!

Hi Chuck - Thanks for the info, I also have the
same issue on my DD, but what dealer did you talk
to that gave you the advice to touch the two wires
together after disconnecting the battery? I have
talked to a few in the Twin Cities who haven't
heard of this issue before and don't have any idea
why this would have happened. It would be great if
I could talk to the same person that gave you this
advice.

Thanks for your help all.

Anyone know what it could be?
Thanks!
