Subject: 1996 Dakota 'idle issue'??? IP: Logged
Message: So I have this V6, stick shift, "96" Dodge Dakota and when I try to start it, it starts and then immediately dies. Then after it dies it is unable to turn over again, unless the butterfly valve is open. If the butterfly valve is open I can keep my truck going if I keep my foot on the gas pedal, and after a while it will idle by itself, however, it idles at 500 RPM's instead of something like 800 RPM's. I looked at the idle adjuster and saw the front part of it which looks like a screw, but when you look at the back it looks nothing like a philips head or flat head, it just looks like a flat cylindrical piece of metal. If anyone can help me it would be very much appreciated.

Message: As a follow up on my idling issues (see three messages ago): The Problem returned but worse.
Cleaning out the idle air controller area in the throttle body worked for a while. However, the problem returned with a vengeance. I ended up changing out the IAC, and MAP sensor. The engine finally threw a code (P0108 - esentially MAP sensor low pressure / high voltage) and the Check Engine light came on.
The MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor was the more critical component. $120 at Advance Auto. Delivered in two days. FYI - don't try to clean your old MAP sensor with throttle body cleaner. It will eat it up and make your problem worse. I speak from experience. heh.
I had to get the IAC for $89 at the dealship. (The warranty price on the box said $65. quite the mark up.) Couldn't get it at the local part stores though.
For those in a similar boat: Just to get around town in the meantime without doing left foot brake right foot gas (mine would die at traffic lights) I pulled the two rubber stoppers off the manifold just past the throttle body. This allows more air into the engine at all times thus raising the idle to around 1000 RPM. However, the vacuum leak is going to kill your acceleration and fuel economy. Don't drive that way too long since you will be sucking unfiltered air into your engine from the engine bay.
The End. Hope that helps some one else out there!

Message: I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee lt 4.7 v8. When i start it the rpm's go way up,and then back down after a while. then while driving they jump up and down through all gears will not hold a gear very often. then some days it is fine. thought it was trans but it wasn't. sometimes it does stall at a light giving the "hit from behind" feeling. Does anybody have an answer to my problem? i am at wits end!

Message: Have you tried checking for codes? It does sound like a TPS(Throttle Position Sensor) problem. You could check it if you're handy with a DVM.
